Obligatory From Out of the Clouds in Derby City Distaff

In another zip code at the top of the stretch, Juddmonte homebred Obligatory (Curlin) turned in a furious stretch rally to record a career high in Saturday's GI Derby City Distaff S. at Churchill Downs.

Favored Just One Time (Not This Time), a last out winner of Keeneland's GI Madison S., showed the way through fractions of :22.36 and :44.95 and hit the quarter pole as the one to catch. Obligatory, meanwhile, last of seven throughout, tipped out six wide beneath Jose Ortiz for the stretch run. Longshot Four Graces (Majesticperfection) took over from the pacesetter in deep stretch, but couldn't withstand the streaking gray, who came rolling over the top to get up by 3/4 of a length. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to Just One Time in third.

“The only thing I reminded Jose [Ortiz] about beforehand was something he knew: her stretch run is her weapon,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “The goal with a filly like this is to get her a Grade I. She loves Churchill; for whatever reason she just really does well at this track. She's won a Grade II and a Grade III here, so we pointed for this race to get her her Grade I. Glad she got it.”

A 16-1 upset winner from out of the clouds in the GII Eight Belles S. on the GI Kentucky Oaks undercard last year, Obligatory's sophomore campaign also included second-place finishes in the GI Acorn S. June 5 and GI Cotillion S. Sept. 25. She entered the Derby City Distaff riding a two-race winning streak, capturing the GIII Chilukki S. in her season finale beneath the Twin Spires Nov. 20 and the GIII Hurricane Bertie S. at Gulfstream Mar. 12. She is now three-for-three at Churchill Downs.

“She's a very nice mare,” Ortiz said. “I feel like she's getting better and better. I just waited and let her get into her own rhythm. They were going very fast on the front end. I was sitting at the back of the pack. I didn't want to sweep her off her feet to get a good finish. I was very happy with the trip I had. I swung a little wide because I felt like I had enough [horse].”

Pedigree Notes:

Obligatory becomes the 18th Grade I winner for Hill 'n' Dale's leading sire Curlin. He has sired 47 graded winners. Macho Uno is the broodmare sire of six graded winners, including GI Kentucky Derby starter Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile). This is his first Grade I winner in North America. Obligatory is a third-generation Juddmonte homebred. Juddmonte bought her unraced third dam, Nijinsky Star, for $700,000 at the 1987 Keeneland November sale. Among the three stakes winners Nijinsky Star produced were Juddmonte's Viviana (Nureyev), who produced seven-time GISW Sightseek (Distant View) and dual GISW Tates Creek (Rahy). Another daughter was the conduit for Juddmonte's recent MGSW & MGISP Bonny South (Munnings) and Obligatory's dam is a half sister to French G1SW Etoile Montante (Miswaki). Obligatory's fourth dam is Hall of Famer Chris Evert (Swoon's Son), whose descendants include champion Chief's Crown (Danzig). The extended family is positively bursting with stakes performers, including recent G1 Saudi Cup runner-up Country Grammer (Tonalist). Uno Duo has a 2-year-old colt by Juddmonte's late Arrogate named Treble Clef and a yearling filly by Into Mischief. She was bred to Speightstown for this season.

TDN Snippets: Week of March 7-13

Legacy pedigrees made their presence felt last week as debuters and Derby contenders alike took to the stage. Here's how things stand now that the dust has cleared.

One last hurrah for Giant's Causeway…
Classic Causeway flies his late sire's flag high as part of a very exclusive club. One of three members of Giant's Causeway's final crop–and all colts, the GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby winner is the third son of the 'Iron Horse' to conquer the race behind Carpe Diem and Destin. With two generations of Classic-winning dam sires in his pedigree, the chestnut seeks to fly in further rarified air in May.

An American in the Land of Oz…
LNJ Foxwood's Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast) might have shown a new light on US participation in Australian racing when the mare came home strongest of all to win the G1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill on Saturday. She's the second US-bred in three years to win the Coolmore, joining Con Te Partiro in 2020. Con Te Partiro was purchased privately from Newgate SF (after RNA-ing at Keeneland November in 2020) by Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing for $1.6 million.

A strong Constitution
We the People declared himself a voice unable to be ignored when the Constitution colt dominated his allowance rivals at Oaklawn Park en route to declaration of rising stardom. The $230,000 FTFMAR snag by Winstar Farm, CMNWLTH, & Siena Farm became his sire's seventh 'TDN Rising Star' in two years. We the People was bred on the same Constitution/Tiznow cross as MGISW Tiz the Law. Picked up by Henley Farms for $40,000 at the 2019 KEEJAN sale with We the People in utero, his dam, Letchworth produced an Always Dreaming colt in 2020 and an Audible colt in 2021. Both are May foals. She was bred back to More Than Ready.

Team Valor sees green with inexpensive filly…
Green Up (Upstart) might be a bit immature with room to grow, according to Barry Irwin, but the filly has already shown the only path for her is up. Coming off a big figure second place effort for prior connections, the globetrotting silks flew home in a 6 3/4 length masterclass in Hallendale with 'TDN Rising Star' honors as icing. A modest $10,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling, and a later private acquisition by Irwin's syndicate, Green Up claims the solid runner Just Call Kenny (Jump Start) in her female family. She is her sire's second Rising Star along with Reinvestment Risk last year and Upstart also claims Kentucky Oaks prospect Kathleen O.

The Curlin Factor…
Juddmonte homebred Obligatory began her 2022 campaign the same way she ended 2021: with a graded win. Curlin, who is the sire of this filly and 46 other graded winners, has 86 black-type winners to his name, representing just over 11% of his starters. Incredible numbers especially when considering 16 of those are Grade I winners. Obligatory is a third-generation Juddmonte homebred. Juddmonte bought her unraced third dam, Nijinsky Star, for $700,000 at the 1987 Keeneland November sale.

Obligatory Gives Rosario Fourth Win On Saturday’s Card With Chilukki Victory

A contentious early pace and a patient ride from jockey Joel Rosario gave Obligatory everything she needed for an easy victory in the Grade 3 Chilukki at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

With three wins already under his belt Saturday, Rosario guided Obligatory to fifth, 6 1/2 lengths back of Princess Causeway who veered out at the break and then zoomed to the lead coming out of the chute at Churchill Downs. Quick early fractions of :22.77 and :45.98 left Princess Causeway unable to hold on to the lead as the field entered the far turn, with Miss Bigly and Matera passing the former leader as they approached the top of the stretch.

Rosario took Obligatory four-wide on the turn as Miss Bigly took the lead early in the stretch. His patience paid off as Obligatory had plenty left to pass first Matera and then Miss Bigly, taking over the front halfway down the stretch and getting a comfortable three-length lead before Rosario powered her down to take the Chilukki by two and a half lengths. Matera passed Miss Bigly for second, with Pass the Plate fourth. Sally's Curlin, She Can't Sing, and Princess Causeway

The final time for the one-mile stakes was 1:34.80. Find this race's chart here.

Obligatory paid $5.00, $3.20, and $2.20. Matera paid $4.00 and $2.60. Miss Bigly paid $2.40.

Bred in Kentucky by her owner Juddmonte Farms, Obligatory is by Curlin out of the Macho Uno mare Uno Duo. She is trained by Bill Mott. With her win in the G3 Chilukki, the 3-year-old filly has three wins in eight starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 9-3-2-0 and career earnings of $711,514.

Obligatory Tabbed 5-2 Morning Line Favorite In Chilukki

Juddmonte's Grade 2-winning homebred Obligatory was made the 5-2 morning line favorite as she attempts to become the fourth 3-year-old in the last five years to win the $300,000 Chilukki (G3) at Churchill Downs.

The 36th running of the Chilukki at one-mile for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up will go as Race 10 of 11 with a post time of 5:36 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 1 p.m.

Obligatory was the 16-1 upset winner of the Eight Belles on the undercard of the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1). Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Obligatory finished second in the $500,000 Acorn (G1) and $1 million Cotillion (G1). In the last four years, Finite (2020), Sally's Curlin (2019) and Farrell (2017) have won the Chilukki as a 3-year-old. Joel Rosario will have the mount on Obligatory from post position No. 7.

The aforementioned Sally's Curlin is also entered in the Chilukki field. There have been no multiple winners of the Chilukki.

Trainer Brad Cox reported the Chilukki is likely to be the final start for Don Alberto Stable's multiple stakes winner Matera. The 4-year-old filly will attempt to garner a graded stakes-placing for the first time in her career. She previously won the $125,000 Groupie Doll and $85,000 Mari Hulman George Memorial.

The complete field for the Chilukki from the rail out (with jockey, trainer and morning line odds):

  1. She Can't Sing (Tyler Gaffalione, Chris Block, 6-1)
  2. Sally's Curlin (Brian Hernandez Jr., Dale Romans, 10-1)
  3. Matera (Florent Geroux, Cox, 3-1)
  4. Miss Bigly (Martin Garcia, Phil D'Amato, 3-1)
  5. Pass the Plate (Joe Talamo, Paul McGee, 20-1)
  6. Its Cold in Dehere (Ricardo Santana Jr. Norm Casse, 12-1)
  7. Obligatory (Rosario, Mott, 5-2)
  8. Princess Causeway (Chris Landeros, Ian Wilkes, 6-1)
