Muhtathir Passes Away at 25

Four-time highweighted Muhtathir (GB) (Elmaamul-Majmu, by Al Nasr {Fr}), who won twice at the highest level for Godolphin, has passed away from the infirmities of old age, Shadwell Stud announced on Tuesday. The 25-year-old chestnut was bred and raced by Shadwell and trained by John Gosden through his 3-year-old season, where he claimed the G2 Celebration Mile. He was also second in the G1 French 2000 Guineas.  For the rest of his career he bore the silks of Godolphin and was trained by Saeed bin Suroor to victories in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at five and the G1 Gran Premio Vittorio di Capua the year prior.

Retired with eight wins from 23 starts, he spent most of his stud career at Haras du Mezeray in France, where he sired 18 black-type winners on the Flat, 12 at group level. Doctor Dino (Fr), Mauralakana (Fr), Satwa Queen (Fr), Mille et Mille (GB) and Indonesienne (Ire) made up his quintet of Group 1 winners. As a broodmare sire, Muhtathir has sired 10 black-type winners so far, including Group 1 winners Holdthasigreen (Fr) (Hold That Tiger), Robin of Navan (Fr) (American Post {GB}) and Mkfancy (Fr) (Makfi {GB}). He is also starting to make an impact in the National Hunt sphere, with Cheltenham Festival winner Envoi Allen (Fr) and Grade 1 hurdler Quel Destin (Fr).

“Muhtathir was a hugely talented performer on the racecourse and transferred that ability and will to win to his stock,” said Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster. “He produced several high-class Flat performers and in his later years became a highly sought-after sire of jumpers. He was still hugely popular this year, covering a limited book of 40 mares at €6,000.

“I must give a special mention to the team at Haras du Mezeray, who did a superb job managing the horse and giving him the platform to flourish in his second career.”

Antoine Bozo Passes at 83

Antoine Bozo, who formerly managed Haras du Mezeray for almost 30 years, passed away on Saturday night, his son Henri Bozo announced via Twitter on Sunday morning. He was 83.

“Our dear father Antoine Bozo passed away last night,” Henri Bozo tweeted on Sunday morning. “He had a beautiful life. He loved his family. He loved horses and horseracing and made many friends during his beautiful career.”

Prior to working at Mezeray, Bozo was part of the team at Haras du Bois Roussel for Count Gerald Moulins de Rochefort. Eventually, Bozo moved again, this time to Haras de Mortree.

In 1975, at the behest of Paul de Moussac, Bozo began his stint at Haras du Mezeray. During Bozo’s tenure at the Normandy stud, 1987 G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Trempolino (Sharpen Up {GB}) was foaled. The future Mezeray sire was followed by Subotica (Fr) (Pampabird {GB}), who landed the 1992 Arc. Other notable horses originating from Mezeray during this time period were 1988 GI Arlington Million hero Mill Native (Exclusive Native) and in the 2000’s, sire and GI Breeders’ Cup Mile victor Artie Schiller (El Prado {Ire}).

Bozo is survived by his wife, Claire, and four children-Henri, Ghislain, Pierre-Antoine, and Anne-France.

Charles-Henri de Moussac told Jour de Galop, “It’s more than a collaborator that we lose, it’s a friend, a family member.”

Geoff Turnbull Passes at 74

Geoff Turnbull MBE, who with his wife Sandra raced horses of the calibre of Group 1 winners Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper), has passed away after a short illness, Elwick Stud announced in a statement via Twitter on Thursday. The proprietor of Elwick Stud in County Durham was 74.

The statement read, “Elwick Stud is deeply saddened by the passing of our much loved CEO Geoff Turnbull MBE after a short battle with illness. Black armbands will be worn during racing today as a mark of respect for Mr. Turnbull, who was a great ambassador for northern racing. We ask that the privacy of the family is respected at this very difficult time.”

A lifelong horse lover, Turnbull purchased his first racehorse, the seven-time winner La Sylphide (GB) (Primitive Gift {GB}), in 1998. Later on she became the first broodmare for his fledgling Elwick Stud operation.

The best runner to carry the Turnbulls’ colours was Wertheimer & Frere-bred Mondialiste. A winner and third in the 2013 G1 Prix Jean Prat, he joined the yard of trainer David O’Meara after being purchased for €190,000 out of the 2014 Arqana Deauville Summer Mixed Sale. The bay would go on to win the 2015 GI Ricoh Woodbine Mile S. in Canada and take the following year’s GI Arlington Million S. Stateside. He was also runner-up in the 2015 GI Breeders’ Cup Mile and is currently standing his third season at Elwick Stud at a fee of £6,000. His oldest foals are yearlings.

Also an international campaigner, the gelded Lord Glitters’s best showing is a win in the 2019 G1 Queen Anne S., while he was second the year prior and also third in both the 2019 G1 Dubai Turf and 2018 G1 Sussex S. The grey carries an entry to the G2 York S. on Saturday.
