Letter To The Editor: Gunnar Nordqvist

I think we must thank Mr. Berry for his  long and exhaustive writing about The Queen, and not only as a breeder and racehorse owner, but also as a monarch who had, via the horses, a unique way of influencing politics, without “doing” politics. Her long and varied travels globally had always a hint of the horses. Whilst maintaining her staunch support of being politically correct, she did manage to convey to the greater public the importance of uniting people rather than dividing. Mr Berry's writing in the TDN today should be read by all the journalists and chroniclers who are today and will forever be totally unaware of her unstinting, perennial work to find a common ground with all peoples.

Mr. Berry is as always an extremely knowledgeable writer and has seen and understood the greater picture of what Queen Elizabeth II managed to achieve over her 70 years of reign.

Sincerely,
Gunnar Nordqvist

Pennsylvania’s Michael P. Ballezzi Passes Away

Michael P. Ballezzi, who retired last year after 25 years as executive director of the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (PTHA), passed away Wednesday, Aug. 31.

“We've lost not only a great horseman, but also a great friend and leader,” said PTHA board of directors president Salvatore DeBunda. “Mike dedicated 25 years of his life to championing the well-being and care of equine athletes, as well as championing the interests of horsemen at Parx Racetrack and across Pennsylvania. When he retired, Mike left behind an incredible legacy at the PTHA.”

A graduate of Widener Law School, an attorney, and a District Justice in Pennsylvania, Ballezzi's contributions to Pennsylvania racing were extensive. He was instrumental in the passage of the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, which legalized slot machines in the Commonwealth and set aside a percentage of the revenues for purses, breeding incentives, and health and pension benefits; advocated for Parx Racing backstretch improvements; and helped start Turning for Home, the non-profit track-based racehorse retirement program that has placed more than 3,200 horses. He also created The Granny Fund, which provides scholarships to Parx stable employees to continue their education in college and night classes.

Ballezzi had been a licensed Thoroughbred owner since 1973 and was also a former trainer. He served as a member of the national Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (THA) board of directors and was recognized in 2020 for outstanding service to the racing industry. He was honored in 2019 by Parx with the naming of the M.P. Ballezzi Appreciation Mile. Ballezzi was named 2008 PTHA Man of the Year and was inducted into the Parx Racing Hall of Fame in 2014.

“Mike Ballezzi's impact on Pennsylvania racing, horsemen, and our retired race horses will live on for many years to come,” said Jeffrey Matty, executive director of the PTHA. “But his impact extends far beyond the policies and programs he championed. He touched so many people on and off the track on a personal level, and that may be his greatest legacy.”

Owner/Breeder Catherine Wills Dies At 71

Racing has lost another dedicated owner-breeder with the sad news that Dr. Catherine Wills has died aged 71 after a long battle with cancer. Enjoying success as a breeder in notable races across Britain, Ireland, France and the States, her runners carried the blue-and-white cross-belted colours of her famous philanthropist father Sir David Wills whose broodmares she inherited upon his death in 1999. Among them were the James Fanshawe-trained Flamboyance (Zilzal), whose visit to Dynaformer in the millennium year saw the arrival of the Christophe Clement-trained heavyweight Dynever who raced for a partnership between Wills and Peter Karches and captured the GIII San Bernardino H., was third in the 2003 GI Breeders' Cup Classic and second in the 2005 G1 Dubai World Cup. Four years later, Flamboyance's daughter Flagrant (Rahy) was responsible for a GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and GII Kentucky Cup Classic winner in the Wills-bred Furthest Land (Smart Strike) from the Michael Maker barn.

Operating under the umbrella entity St Clare Hall Stud, Wills utilised the nearby Kirtlington Stud where she also bred Selino (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) who she raced initially before selling to Qatar Racing and who won last year's G1 Sydney Cup in the OTI Racing colours. Selino is out of Air Kiss (GB) (Red Ransom), a daughter of her father's celebrated broodmare Applecross (GB)

(Glint Of Gold {GB}), who was responsible for three notable runners including the G1 Prix du Cadran hero Invermark (GB) (Machiavellian). She also produced the G2 Princess of Wales's S. winner Craigsteel (GB) (Suave Dancer), whose success in that July meeting feature coincided with Sir David's final racecourse appearance in 1999. Wills also bred the 2007 G2 Gimcrack S. winner Sir Gerry (Carson City), a grandson of another St Clare Hall stalwart in Fetlar (GB) (Pharly {Fr}), dam of the G3 Jersey S. scorer Ardkinglass (GB) (Green Desert).

Among the trainers she was associated with were Sir Henry Cecil, who provided her with listed success with Succinct (GB) (Hector Protector), a relative of Ardkinglass, in 2002; James Fanshawe who saddled her first black-type winner Eilean Shona (GB) (Suave Dancer) in 1999; Sir Mark Prescott, Nicolas and Christophe Clement and Fanshawe's former assistant Kevin Philippart de Foy. It was with a relative of Eilean Shona that she enjoyed her final win in France in a ParisLongchamp handicap last month, the Nicolas Clement-trained Sunray (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), while at Kempton on Wednesday night the Fanshawe-trained Murau (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}), a grandson of Applecross, paid the ultimate tribute by winning the closing handicap.

A Jockey Club member and art historian, Catherine was also a trustee of the Sandford St Martin Trust, The Dulverton Trust, the HDH Wills Charitable Trust and the Ditchley Foundation which was among the most celebrated of her father's enterprises. She also helped to create the Martin Wills Memorial Trust and was a judge in the Martin Wills Writing Awards, which honoured her brother. Those awards ran for 25 years and offered budding journalists a way into the industry.

A widely respected figure who was generous with her time and cared greatly for her horses' welfare, her funeral is to be held at St Martin's Church at Sandford St Martin, Oxfordshire on Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. There will also be a memorial service at Knockando Parish Church, Moray, Scotland on Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. Garden flowers only.

Brazil’s Samir Abujamra Passes Away

by Victor Correa

The Brazilian Thoroughbred industry lost one of its most brilliant personalities when Samir Abujamra passed away in Soo Paulo on July 14. Abujamra, who had no family connections to the Brazilian racing industry growing up, was a lawyer by trade. He worked as a handicapper for the Jockey Club of Sao Paulo beginning in the 1960's. Later on, he became the editor of the magazine Revista Turf & Fomento.

The publication became the most important magazine in horse racing in the country, covering not only Brazil, but results from all over the world. It was through Turf & Fomento that Abujamra started to maintain contact with various players in the international racing scene. From then on, he had the opportunity to make what perhaps was his most important professional incursion.

Still in the 1960s, Abujamra attended the sales in Newmarket for the first time. He soon became the Brazilian representative at the British Bloodstock Agency (BBA)–which during the last half of the 20th century, was the most prominent agency in the world. He was present at the Tattersalls December Sales for more than 50 years without interruption and was awarded a medal recognizing his contributions as their South American representative over such an extended period.

“Samir represented Tattersalls in South America for many years and epitomised all that is good about the global thoroughbred industry,” said Jimmy George of Tattersalls. “He was knowledgeable, charming, immaculate and a man of the utmost integrity. He was so proud that he had attended more than 50 consecutive December Sales and it was always a joy to see him.”

From the moment he extended his activities to international racing, Abujamra started to operate as a focal point of information and knowledge for a wide range of breeders and owners based in Brazil. In this context, many began to use him as an advisor and for the acquisition of animals abroad. One of the imports Abujamra selected was Ghadeer (Fr) (Lyphard), perhaps the most influential among all the stallions in the country's history. Roi Normand (Exclusive Native), who also left a huge legacy, was a product of an Abujamra negotiation. He also brokered the export of ex-pat American stallion New Year's Day (Street Cry {Ire}) to Japan.

“Samir was a true gentleman and the ultimate professional,” said Luis Felipe Brandão dos Santos, President of the Brazilian Breeders and Owners Association. “He was our role model and inspiration. The Brazilian racing industry thanks Samir Abujamra for so much.”

Besides brokering horse sales, Abujamra aided in the implementation of the database and research tool of the Brazilian Stud Book in the 1990s. In the 2000s, he welcomed and guided the late Prince Khalid Abdullah of Juddmonte during a visit to the racetrack in Sao Paulo.

In addition to the two decades of collaboration with Turf & Fomento, Abujamra published the book Turfe–Historias e Memorias in 2010 and more recently, he launched Conversas de Turfe. In the writing of the latter, he proposed to share a little about the history of the great breeders of the world–an arduous task for any writer, even though he was already in poor health.
