Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal’s Jed Cohen Passes Away

California's Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal–the nom de course of the Cohen family–lost the stable founder and the Cohen family patriarch, Jed Cohen, Sunday, Nov. 27. Cohen passed away in Del Mar at the age of 89 after battling health issues for the past few years.

Among the top horses raced by the Cohens–sometimes in partnership–were GISWs Janet (GB) (Emperor Jones), River Boyne (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), and Dr. Schivel (Violence). The stable most recently took the leading owner title at the 2022 Santa Anita fall and winter meets and is currently leading the Del Mar meet. Their most recent win came in the final race Saturday at Del Mar in an optional allowance with Percolate (Ire) (Sir Percy {GB}). The operation often bought ready-made racehorses in Europe and had success in bringing them to compete stateside.

According to his son, Tim Cohen, Jed Cohen had been involved in horse racing for about 61 years and was brought to the sport through his own father's pocket-change forays in the Big Apple.

“His father loved horse racing,” said Tim. “His father and three other people would pool 50 cents together to make a $2 bet in New York.”

A backbone of the California racing industry for decades, Jed Cohen's “greatest achievement,” said Tim, was the “the achievement of others. He was always immensely happy with everyone associated in the victories. His greatest victory was the joy of others.”

That, “and he just had this genuine love of people and horses,” said Tim. “We never wanted the last race out of a horse. We always wanted them treated the right way. If there was a problem, we stopped. He never wanted a horse to run if it wasn't exactly right.”

Former trainer Darrell Vienna, who enjoyed tremendous success with horses racing in Cohen's colors, concurs.

“He was the perfect owner. If a horse needed rest, he absolutely insisted on it. His attitude was, 'let's do the best by the horse,'” said Vienna, who estimated that he had known Cohen for more than 30 years.

“He was just a really special person,” Vienna said. “After I retired from training, we kept in close contact. We spoke regularly about racing, about life and politics.”

Though an astute handicapper, Cohen kept it small–like his own father. “A big bet for him would be $20. He just loved analyzing races,” said Vienna. “I'll miss having access to his wisdom and his kindness. He was an exceptional listener–he was always paying attention. He was just a unique, extraordinary person. He's a big loss to horse racing but an even bigger loss to anyone who knew him.”

Cohen is survived by his wife, Bobbie; as well as his children Tim, Mark, and Linda; and two grandsons.

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Dies at 91

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, owner-breeder of Crystal Ocean (GB), the world's co-top-rated horse of 2019, has died at the age of 91.

Born in August 1931 and a member of the noted banking family, Rothschild enjoyed much success on the turf with horses bred and raised at his Southcourt Stud in Bedfordshire.

Most notable among them was the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Crystal Ocean, a top-class middle-distance performer who now stands at The Beeches Stud in Ireland, and whose seven group wins included the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot in the same season he was beaten a head in the G1 Juddmonte International. He was also twice second in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S.

Rothschild also raced the GI Canadian International winner Hillstar (GB) and treble Group 2 victrix Crystal Capella (GB), both also trained by Stoute, and he was represented with a Grade 1 winner over jumps by Ogee (GB), trained by his sister Renee Robeson, who played a key role in the family's Southport Stud operation and died in 2015.

The treble Group 1 winner Notnowcato (GB) was also bred at Southcourt and raced in the colours of Rothschild's sons, Anthony and David.

This season the owner-breeder had his colours carried to victory by Crystal Caprice (Ire), who won consecutive races at Yarmouth, Goodwood and Ascot in the summer. The 101-rated daughter of Frankel (GB), out of a half-sister to Crystal Ocean, is among a group consisting of one yearling, four foals, two fillies in training and six broodmares to be offered at Tattersalls later this month as part of a partial dispersal of Southcort Stud, consigned by New England Stud and Stoute's Freemason Lodge respectively.

Peter Stanley, owner of New England Stud, paid tribute to his longstanding friend and client on Tuesday. He said, “Evelyn is a real loss. He was a very special man, extremely charming, and he loved everything to do with his bloodstock operation, he really took pleasure out of it.

“He was one of the last of the great owner-breeders in a way, and was a man who punched well above his weight with the good horses he bred. His sister Renee was a very key part of the entire operation, too. She was an incredible lady and they had great fun doing it as a partnership. The 'Crystal' famiy has been a huge success in particular and it is still going strong.”

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, a philanthropist and financier, was knighted by the Queen in 1989 for services to banking and finance. A statement issued by his family on Tuesday morning read, “It is with great sorrow that Lady de Rothschild announces the death of her beloved husband, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, after a short illness.

“Sir Evelyn passed away peacefully yesterday evening at his home in London with his loved ones by his side.

“The family appreciates thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.”

Florida Racing Official Ed Mackie Passes Away

Ed Mackie, a much respected and admired presence in Florida racing for 50 years, died suddenly Wednesday evening. He was 75.

Mackie was Gulfstream's director of mutuels since 2002, but before that had served in similar roles at Hialeah Park and Biscayne Dog Track. Mackie was also director of mutuels at Calder Race Course, Tropical Park and Gulfstream Park West since 2003. Before working in pari-mutuels, Mackie was a champion amateur jai alai player.

Mackie was admired by those he worked with as well as horsemen for his knowledge, his wit, and his calm under pressure.

“To say he will be greatly missed is an understatement,” said Bill Badgett, executive director of Florida Racing Operations for 1/ST Racing. “He was dedicated not only to our company, but to the entire racing industry. This is a huge loss to horse racing. Someone like Ed is valuable far beyond his knowledge, because he was an amazing colleague who was calm and could handle any situation thrown at him. I will miss talking to him every day.”

Mackie is survived by his wife, Linda, three children, and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Fred Hunter's University (2401 S University Dr, Davie, FL 33324) with a memorial service at 4 p.m.
