Joy Valley, Dam Of Champion Riboletta, Dies At Age 31

Taylor Made Farm announced Oct. 30 that Joy Valley (BRZ) has died from infirmities of old age. She was 31 years old.

By Ghadeer (FR) out of multiple Brazillian-Grade 1 winner Belle Valley (BRZ), Joy Valley was owned by Aaron and Marie Jones and resided at Taylor Made Farm.

Joy Valley was the dam of four stakes winners, including Riboletta (BRZ). Named 2000 Eclipse champion older mare, Riboletta was a Group 1 winner in her native Brazil before coming to the U.S. Once she was stateside, she captured an additional five Grade 1 victories, including the Beldame, Santa Margarita, Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap, Vanity, Clement L. Hirsch, and Ruffian Handicap She retired with over $1.5 million in earnings.

Joy Valley was also the dam of Super Power (BRZ) a multiple Grade 1 winner, Horse of the Year, and twice named Champion colt at ages two and three in Brazil.

Additionally, she produced stakes winners Forest Attack and Tamara Princess (BRZ).

“She was an incredible mare,” said Frank Taylor. “We were privileged to have her here for so many years at Taylor Made Farm for Aaron and Marie Jones. She produced an Eclipse champion in Riboletta and was just a great mare. Everything you could hope for.”

Joy Valley will be buried at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.

Kelly McDaniel, Former Airdrie Stud Stallion Manager, Passes Away

Kelly McDaniel, a long-time and beloved stallion manager at Airdrie Stud, passed away Sunday at the age of 56. Known for his affable character and great love of the history of the land on which Airdrie was built, Kelly dutifully looked after the Airdrie stallions for more than 32 years before his retirement in 2017.

“Kelly was one of the all-time originals,” said Airdrie’s Bret Jones. “He, of course, took wonderful care of his horses, but I think Kelly’s incredible storytelling is how he impacted so many people. He loved giving tours of Airdrie to anyone with even a hint of interest and they always walked away so grateful for the experience. Dad always said that Kelly got more fan mail at the farm than any horse or human that set foot here. He loved talking to people and took great joy in teaching them something they didn’t know. I think he knew more about the history of this land than anyone named Jones. We have been so lucky to have had Kelly in our lives, and our Airdrie family sends our deepest condolences to all those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.”

A graveside service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Midway Cemetery in Midway, Ky. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Champion Comando Intimo The Latest Stallion Killed In Peru

Late last year, a raid on Haras Barlovento in Peru made global headlines when the list of equine casualties included North American-born stallions Cyrus Alexander and The Lieutenant; the latter being a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify.

South American publication Turf Diario reports that the violence has continued at Peru's stud farms, with the latest strike being at Haras El Castillo on the dawn of Sept. 29. The attack claimed the life of 2004 Peruvian Horse of the Year Comando Intimo, along with two other horses on the farm.

According to Turf Diario, early theories by investigators speculate that the attack was conducted by a group aiming to collect and sell the horses' meat.

The stallions at Haras Barlovento were also killed for their meat, according to that farm's social media channels. The attack on Haras Barlovento was so catastrophic to its operation that it announced its exit from the breeding industry less than a week later.

Comando Intimo was one of Peru's biggest native stars on the racetrack, winning seven of 27 starts over the course of five seasons.

He was named Peru's Horse of the Year in 2004, with a campaign that included venturing out to Chile to win the Group 1 Latin American Grand Prix, one of the continent's biggest races. He was also named Peru's champion 3-year-old colt that season, with a domestic win in the Clasico Marina de Guerra del Peru, and in-the-money efforts in the Peruvian Derby and 2,000 Guineas.

Comando Intimo began his stallion career at Haras Barlovento, and he was later moved to Haras El Castillo. The 20-year-old son of Riyadian has been used sparingly at stud, with just 36 foals over nine crops of racing age, according to Peruvian Stud Book records. However, the small sampling of runners has produced several stakes winners.

Grade 1-Placed Louisiana Stallion Givemeaninit Dies Of EPM

Clear Creek Stud in Folsom, La., announced Thursday, Oct. 1 the loss of first-year stallion Givemeaminit to EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis).

“Anyone who has been involved in the Thoroughbred breeding business is aware of the heartbreaks that often come with it,” a statement from the farm read. “That became abundantly clear to us here at Clear Creek Stud this morning when we lost first year stallion Givemeaminit to EPM.”

The first son of leading Louisiana stallion Star Guitar to enter stud, Givemeaminit was second in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes as a 2-year-old and fourth in that year's Breeders Cup Juvenile.

As a 3-year-old, he won the Louisiana Champions Day Sprint, was third in the G3 Pat Day Mile and was the Louisiana-bred champion colt or gelding. The Valene Farms LLC runner was trained throughout his career by Dallas Stewart and had career earnings of $428,580.

Givemeaminit stood for an advertised fee of $2,500 during his lone season at stud.
