Aqueduct, Oaklawn Team Up For Cross Country Pick 5 On Saturday

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Aqueduct Racetrack and Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

A field of maiden fillies competing with a $50,000 tag at Oaklawn Park begins the sequence. Carded as Race 6 with a 4:42 p.m. Eastern post, the six-furlong event features Danny Caldwell's Northern Diamond, who is coming off a career-best effort when second as the beaten favorite. She will be making her first start for new connections after being claimed for $40,000 last out.

Action shifts to Aqueduct for the second leg in Race 8 at 4:55 p.m. with a six-furlong state-bred optional-claiming tilt. Roddy Valente's Bustin Timberlake seeks a second straight victory against New York-breds over the Big A main track. Trained by Charlton Baker, the son of Bustin Stones was an emphatic 6 ¾-length winner last out, earning a career-best 99 Beyer Speed Figure. The Players Group's Steam Engine will be seeking his third straight triumph for trainer Antonio Arriaga.

Oaklawn will host the middle leg when an 11-horse field assembles for a six-furlong claiming sprint in Race 7 at 5:15 p.m. Hansens Mischief was made the 7-2 lukewarm favorite for the event and arrives off a fourth-place finish against starter allowance company at the Arkansas oval. Heisfancy also seeks to regain form for trainer Karl Broberg, seeking his first triumph since a score over the all-weather surface at Arlington Park four starts back.

Irresistible Girl will hope the third time is the charm in Aqueduct's ninth-race finale at 5:26 p.m. The daughter of Tapiture will compete as part of a nine-horse field of sophomore filly New York-bred maidens going six furlongs. Trained by Brad Cox and owned by Madaket Stable, Wonder Stable and Robert LaPenta, Irresistible Girl was third, beaten a length last out going a one-turn mile at the Aqueduct.

Summer Brew will attempt to add a victory to a consistent record of 6-0-3-1. Owned by NY Final Furlong Racing Stable and Maspeth Stable and trained by Jorge Abreu, the daughter of Summer Front has kept classy company in the maiden ranks finishing behind subsequent stakes winners Samborella, Make Mischief and Party At Page's as well as stakes-placed Rossa Veloce.

Oaklawn Park hosts the Cross Country Pick 5's finale, when an overflow field of sophomores chase their first career win for a $50,000 tag. Winchell Thoroughbreds' Megatap sports blinkers after two close runner-up placings for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Highland Yard's Lazaretto takes a drop in class for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. after finishing tenth off a slow start in hia February 27 debut over a sloppy track at Oaklawn Park. The six-furlong event will go off at 5:47 p.m. in Race 8.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. TVG’s Weekend Broadcast Features Live Coverage Of Louisiana Derby Day

Mandaloun, the winner of the Risen Star Stakes (G2) in February, will continue his road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) and face seven rivals in Saturday's $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2) from Fair Grounds. TVG will be broadcasting live from Louisiana with expanded coverage of the supersized fourteen-race card which features seven stakes races.

TVG's Mike Joyce, Joaquin Jaime and Scott Hazelton will be reporting live from Fair Grounds with exclusive interviews, selections and expert handicapping analysis. The Louisiana Derby is one of four graded stakes races on the card and is a top-tier Kentucky Derby prep race with 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top four finishers. The race will feature a rematch of the top three finishers from both the Risen Star Stakes (G2) and the Lecomte Stakes (G3) – Mandaloun for trainer Brad Cox, Proxy for Michael Stidham and the Steve Asmussen-trained Midnight Bourbon.

Saturday's card at Fair Grounds will also feature a prep race for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) – the $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). The race has drawn a field of eight sophomore fillies including Clairiere, a homebred daughter of Curlin for Stonestreet Stables. Trained by Steve Asmussen, she was triumphant in her 3-year-old debut in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) and will have Joe Talamo aboard.

Todd Schrupp, Christina Blacker and Caleb Keller will be live at Santa Anita on Saturday and Simon Bray will be contributing to the from the studio. The featured race on the nine-race card is the $100,000 San Luis Rey Stakes (G3) which will feature the return to action for LNJ Foxwood's multiple graded stakes winner United. Trained by Richard Mandella, Flavien Prat will be aboard as the 6-year-old gelded son of Giant's Causeway tries to notch his eighth career victory.

The stakes action will continue at Gulfstream Park on Saturday and TVG's Gabby Gaudet will be reporting live from the track with insights and interviews throughout the twelve-race card which features the $100,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3), a sprint for fillies and mares. The race has attracted a contentious field of eight including Slam Dunk, a four-year-old daughter of Into Mischief stepping up to stakes company after an allowance win for Shug McGaughey in February.

In addition to racing from Fair Grounds, Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park, TVG will feature racing from Oaklawn Park, Aqueduct and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

Cox Keeping Top Mares Apart: Monomoy Girl To Apple Blossom, Shedaresthedevil To La Troienne

Shedaresthedevil is scheduled to return to the track Thursday morning for the first time since her head victory over favored Letruksa in the $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) for older fillies and mares last Saturday at Oaklawn, according to Jorge Abrego, who oversees trainer Brad Cox's Oaklawn division.

Shedaresthedevil ($5.60) ran 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in a meet-best 1:42.57 to earn a preliminary Beyer Speed Figure of 99 for her wire-to-wire victory under Florent Geroux, the filly's first start since finishing third in the $400,000 Spinster Stakes (G1) Oct. 4 at Keeneland. The Spinster also was the first race against older horses for Shedaresthedevil, who is co-owned by Staton Flurry of Hot Springs.

Shedaresthedevil was a finalist for an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 3-year-old filly of 2020 after winning four races, including the $300,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) last March at Oaklawn and the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) Sept. 4 at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks is the country's biggest prize for 3-year-old fillies. In her previous start at Oaklawn, Shedaresthedevil finished third behind eventual divisional champion Swiss Skydiver in the $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) last May.

“There was a little more pressure today than last time, being the Oaks champion coming in, 6-5, 4-5, whatever odds we were,” Flurry said. “I'm glad to have that one over with and see where we go from here.”

Although the Azeri is the final major local prep for the $1 million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) April 17, Cox said Shedaresthedevil probably will make her next start in the $500,000 La Troienne Stakes (G1) April 30 at Churchill Downs. Cox is pointing for two-time Eclipse Award winner Monomoy Girl for the Apple Blossom.

“We'll talk it over with both camps, the Monomoy camp and the Shedaresthedevil camp, and come up with a game plan,” Cox said. “Ultimately, it would be great to keep them apart. They're two great fillies and both, obviously, worthy of running in Grade 1's next time. There's no sense in them butting heads this early in the year. Really, for both of them, their goal is the Breeders' Cup.”

Monomoy Girl, a two-time Breeders' Cup Distaff champion, won the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) for older fillies and mares Feb. 28 at Oaklawn in her seasonal debut.

Flurry said Shedaresthedevil received a 60-day break following the Spinster before resuming training in Kentucky. Shedaresthedevil arrived Jan. 9 at Oaklawn and returned to the work tab Feb. 1 before joining Cox's Fair Grounds division because of anticipated severe winter weather in Hot Springs that, ultimately, canceled training for almost two weeks. Cox had said in January that Shedaresthedevil was already on a tight schedule to make the Azeri and couldn't avoid any hiccups in advance of the race.

“We didn't miss any training, but we probably would have liked to have worked her a couple of more times maybe to feel a little more confident coming over here,” Cox said. “Obviously, she was fit enough to get it done. I think that's something positive that we can maybe move forward from. She was on the front end, doing all the work. We'll give her plenty of time to recover from this one and hopefully move forward.”

Cox said Shedaresthedevil exited the Azeri in “really good” shape physically and will remain at Oaklawn for the “short term” in preparation for her next start.

“Probably, the La Troienne makes the most sense,” Cox said.

Wednesday was another walk day for Shedaresthedevil, Abrego said, after Oaklawn closed the track early because of lightning in the area.

Flurry, who campaigns Shedaresthedevil with Qatar Racing LTD (David Redvers) and Big Aut Farms (Autry Lowry), purchased the daughter of Daredevil for $280,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. Shedaresthedevil has a 6-2-3 record from 12 lifetime starts and earnings of $1,503,518.

Cox said stablemate Getridofwhatailesu, who finished third in the Azeri, will be considered for the 1 1/16-mile Apple Blossom. Getridofwhatailesu was coming off a sharp late-running victory in the $150,000 Pippin Stakes Jan. 23 at Oaklawn. She was beaten two lengths in the Azeri.

“It's possible she could stay here and look at the Apple Blossom,” Cox said. “A Grade 1 placing would be worth a lot; I'm not saying she can't win. But she likes this track.”

Cox said Getridofwhatailesu also will be considered for the $100,000 Doubledogdare Stakes (G3) April 16 at Keeneland and the La Troienne. Both races are 1 1/16 miles.

Single Winner Takes Down $108,475 In Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5

A single winner cashed a ticket in Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5, which paid $108,475 for selecting all five victors for the 50-cent wager at races from Aqueduct in New York and Oaklawn in Arkansas. The sequence's total pool was $127,630.

Oaklawn started the action with the $500,000 Essex in Race 7 featuring six 4-year-olds and up competing at 1 1/16 miles. Silver Slate, the favorite, sat chilly off the pace before gaining command by the stretch and holding off R Rated Superstar by a neck to win for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Ridden by Ricardo Santana, Jr., Silver Slate completed the course in 1:42.73. He returned $4.40 on a $2 win wager.

Aqueduct ran its first leg in the sequence with Mihos posting a 1 1/4-length victory in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance optional claiming title in Race 8. The Jimmy Jerkens trainee rallied from fifth in the stretch to hit the wire in 1:18.73 under jockey Trevor McCarthy. Mihos, off at 6-1, paid $14.40

Back at Oaklawn, Special Reserve went gate-to-wire to win a six-furlong allowance optional claiming contest in Race 8. The Mike Maker trainee logged a final time of 1:09.39, defeating One for Richie by two lengths under rider Florent Geroux. Special Reserve, off at 8-1, returned $18.20.

Sadie Lady fended off Call On Mischief's late charge to win the $100,000 Correction by a neck in Aqueduct's feature in Race 9. Trainer Rob Atras won his fourth race on the card, with Sadie Lady making her successful 5-year-old debut, winning at 5-1 odds [$13]. Jockey Manny Franco earned his third win of the day, piloting Sadie Lady to victory.

Closing the curtain on the Cross Country Pick 5 was a win by a neck for Carlos L. in the $150,000 Temperence Hill in Oaklawn's Race 9. The sequence's biggest price went off at 47-1 and paid a sizable $97.30, ensuring the lone winner of the payout. Carlos L., trained by McLean Robertson and ridden by Alex Canchari, set a new track record for the marathon 1 1/2 miles on the main track, finishing in 2:29.87 with Lone Rock in close pursuit. Tenfold, the 2-1 favorite, finished third, a neck behind Lone Rock.
