Dream Quist Becomes First Winner At Stud For Nyquist

Although favored at Churchill Downs last month, Nyquist's 2-year-old filly Dream Quist didn't quite seem to take to the sloppy going in her first start. However, she appears to have learned from the experience as she broke her maiden at Ellis Park to give her Kentucky Derby-winning sire his first winner as a stallion.

Although getting knocked around a bit at the start, Dream Quist didn't waste time getting into position and was soon tracking in third after a quarter of a mile.

As the field approached the turn, she took aim at the leader and sprinted by that one at the top of the stretch. The odds-on favorite passed tiring horses late to grab second but Dream Quist was 4 1/2 lengths clear at the wire.

Dream Quist was bred by Seclusive Farm LLC, Chester and Anne Prince, and James Murphy in Kentucky. She is out of listed winner Seacrettina who is a half to G2-placed Ramsgate.

Dream Quist was a $265,000 yearling at Fasig-Tipton in 2019, a year in which Nyquist was the leading first-crop yearling sire by average. In 2020, he is the leading 2-year-old sire by median.

Nyquist resides at Darley's U.S. base in Lexington, Ky., where he stood the 2020 breeding season for an advertised fee of $40,000.

Nyquist Filly Relishes Stretch Out to Become Sire’s First Winner

C&H Diamond Racing LLC & Baccari Racing Stable’s Dream Quist (Nyquist) improved significantly on the stretch out at Ellis Sunday to become the first winner for her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo). A debut fifth as the favorite sprinting in the Churchill slop June 28, the $265,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling was off as the 5-2 second choice this time but was bumped from both sides leaving the gate. She moved up in between horses to sit perched in third and tugged her way up to challenge the pacesetter heading for home after a half in :48 flat. She started to wear down the frontrunner at the quarter pole, and spurted clear as they straightened to kick away convincingly by 3 3/4 lengths. Odds-on favorite Bahama Mischief (Into Mischief), a $300,000 KEESEP yearling who was a close second on debut at Churchill June 26, rallied to complete the chalky exacta.

Dream Quist, who sold on the final day of the final major yearling sale of 2019, is out of a mare who earned a 95 Beyer Speed Figure when taking a Lone Star sprint stakes race as a July juvenile. Dam Seacrettina (Sea of Secrets) produced an American Pharoah filly in 2019 and was bred to Street Sense for 2021.

The winner’s sire, a champion juvenile who would go on to take the 2016 GI Kentucky Derby before retiring to Darley, led all first-crop sires by yearling average last season at $236,318.

Liam’s Map Colt Clocks Fastest Quarter During First Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Under Tack Session

The first session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale's under tack show kicked off on Wednesday with a Liam's Map colt taking the spotlight among the juveniles working a quarter-mile.

The gray or roan colt, offered as Hip 151, covered the distance in :20 4/5 seconds over the Maryland State Fairgrounds' dirt surface in Timonium, Md. Consigned by All Dreams Equine, agent, the colt is out of the placed Big Brown mare One Foxy Grey, whose first foal to race is a winner. His second dam is the Grade 1 winner Irish Smoke, with an extended family that includes Grade 1 winner Book Review and Grade 2 winner Instagrand.

Two horses clocked quarters in :21 2/5 seconds on Wednesday:

  • Hip 39, Ours Forever, a Louisiana-bred Half Ours filly out of the stakes-placed Dayjur mare Illustrious Dream, whose three foals to race are all winners. Consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent, she hails from the family of champion Answer Lively.
  • Hip 132, a first-crop Nyquist filly out of the unraced Silver Deputy mare Mother's Milk, whose runners include the Grade 3-placed Sheza Milky Way. Grade 2 winner Varenka is in the family of this filly, who is consigned by Hoby and Layna Kight, agent.

The honors for fastest eighth of a mile were shared by four juveniles during the first breeze session:

  • Hip 51, a first-crop Speightster colt out of the unplaced Mizzen Mast mare Izzy Izzy, whose three foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner En Hanse. Soaring Free, Canada's 2004 Horse of the Year, can be found in this colt's page, along with Canadian champion Regal Intention. He is consigned by L.G., agent.
  • Hip 106, a first-crop Outwork colt out of the unraced Maria's Mon mare Marialua, who is the dam of five winners from eight foals to race. The New York-bred is from the extended family of Triple Crown winner Affirmed, and he is consigned by Wolf Creek Farms, agent.
  • Hip 118, a Virginia-bred Uncle Mo colt out of the winning Mineshaft mare Miss Ocean City, whose runners include Grade 2 winner Azar. Belmont Stakes winner Go and Go is on the page of this colt, who is consigned by Pike Racing, agent.
  • Hip 173, a Maryland-bred first-crop Upstart filly out of the stakes-winning Pure Prize mare Plum, who is the dam of two winners from three runners. Cary Frommer consigns the filly, as agent.

The second of three under tack sessions at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale commences Thursday, beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern. The auction will take place June 29-30, with each session beginning at 11 a.m.
