Provocateur Keeps His Cool in Hutcheson Win

Provocateur came home strongest of six in his first career stakes victory for the partnership of MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm. Steadily improving since his eighth place career debut over a mile on the grass at Belmont Park Oct. 10, he weakened to fourth after dueling through six panels over the main track at the venue. Finding the winner's circle Dec. 23 down at Tampa Bay by 4 1/2 lengths as the 4-5 favorite, his connections opted to try their colt in the Jan. 15 Pasco S. for a 3-year-old bow with first-time Lasix, and he was outkicked late in the lane, finishing second by 2 1/2 lengths.

Coming off the diuretic for this contest, Provocateur overcame an early bump after the start to cruise from third behind early leader Golden Juan and 1-2 favorite Nitrous Channel. First to striking coming through the far turn, Irad Ortiz Jr. forced his rivals' hands and it was a three horse line at the top of the stretch. Kicking clear of the pacesetter, Provocateur and Nitrous Channel locked horns for the duel to the wire and  the former kicked clear in the final sixteenth to win by two lengths. It was Todd Pletcher's eighth win in the race. “We were a little confused about what he wanted to do early on. He wasn't training as promisingly as we had hoped. We thought he would improve a little bit on the grass,” Pletcher said in the post-race interview. “After that experience he seemed to improve in his dirt training and recently has really come around.”

Dam Cayala had shown an affinity for Into Mischief with all four of her offspring by him ending up winners and three earning black-type including GIII Southwest S. winner One Liner. She has five winners from five to race. There is a 2-year-old filly by Flatter on record and the mare is expecting a foal by Authentic this season.

Nyquist Colt Stays Hot at Tampa

After beginning the new year with a pair of victories, the streaking Scalding (c, 4, Nyquist–Hot Water, by Medaglia d'Oro) continued his ascension with a game neck decision over favored Cody's Wish (Curlin) while making his stakes debut in Saturday's GIII Michelob Ultra Challenger S. at Tampa. Dynamic One (Union Rags) was third.

The 5-1 chance sat a good trip in an outside third. He set his sights on the leader rounding the far turn as Cody's Wish, a winner of three straight at Churchill last fall, also revved up one to his outside. The pacesetting Wolfie's Dynaghost (Ghostzapper) was the first to blink in the stretch and it was down to Scalding and Cody's Wish. Cody's Wish loomed boldly on the outside and looked like he was on his way, but Scalding wasn't done yet, and fended that rival off for a hard-fought victory. Last term's returning GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. winner and Shug McGaughey-trained stablemate Greatest Honour (Tapit) never factored in sixth.

A well-beaten eighth in his debut going seven furlongs at Aqueduct Nov. 11, Scalding took a big step forward to finish second stretching to a one-turn mile in Ozone Park Dec. 2. Sent south for the winter and aimed at two-turn races, the dark bay kicked off his 4-year-old season with a maiden victory while making his route debut in the Gulfstream slop Jan. 5, then added an optional claimer by a flashy 5 1/4 lengths at Tampa last time Feb. 11.

“It's a big job going from an allowance/other than condition to this spot, but we've always liked this horse,” McGaughey said. “He has been training forwardly and from what we saw today, his future is definitely [bright]. He had a race over the track, and I think that probably helped him. He is a pretty talented number and his last two races had been so good, with a little encouragement from the owners we decided to take a shot, and it worked.”

Scalding added to a big day for winning co-owner LNJ Foxwoods. The Roth family was also represented by G1 Coolmore Classic heroine Lighthouse (Mizzen Mast) in Australia.

Pedigree Notes:

Scalding becomes the fifth graded/eighth stakes winner for young sire Nyquist. He is the 19th graded/54th stakes for broodmare sire Medaglia d'Oro. The unraced Hot Water, a daughter of SW & GSP Elusive Heat, has also produced SW & GSP Tracksmith (Street Sense); stakes-placed Tortuga (Bodemeister); impressive Oaklawn 3-year-old filly maiden winner Hot and Sultry (Speightster); 2-year-old colt Runhappy d'Oro (Runhappy); and a yearling filly by Omaha Beach ($160,000 KEENOV purchase by The Elkstone Group). She was covered by War of Will for 2022. Scalding's third dam is 2001 champion 3-year-old filly Xtra Heat.

Moquest, Full Brother to Nyquist, to Stand in California

Moquest (Uncle Mo–Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry), a full-brother to champion Nyquist, will stand the 2022 breeding season at Milky Way Farm in California. Moquest will stand for $4,500 LFSN. An injury during training prevented the $650,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase from making it to the races. Bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms, the 3-year-old will be supported in the breeding shed by his owners, EAS Alliance LLC.

Last year, Uncle Mo's sales yearlings averaged $270,915 including two yearlings that sold last year for $1.6-million and $1.1 million. His juveniles averaged $287,786, among them a $1.3 million purchase.

In 2021, Nyquist, who closed out the season as the second Leading Second-Crop Sire, was responsible for yearlings averaging $151,826, while his juveniles averaged $328,167, including the $2.6 million Fasig-Tipton March topper.

In addition to Nyquist, Seeking Gabrielle is also responsible for a colt by Tapit, that realized $2.6 million in the sales ring. To date, her progeny has sold for $5.4 million.

Nyquist Filly Upsets Rachel Alexandra S.

Ike and Dawn Thrash's Turnerloose (Nyquist) sprung a 17-1 upset to put herself on the GI Kentucky Oaks trail while making her first start on dirt in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. at the Fair Grounds. Away alertly, the dark bay hustled up to be in contention before settling back in a ground-saving fourth as the well-related and previously unbeaten Silverbulletday S. winner La Crete (Medaglia d'Oro) dictated terms with GSW Hidden Connection (Connect) hot on her heels through a :23.94 opening quarter. La Crete was pulled up sharply as the half went up in :48.18, plummeting to the back of the pack, leaving Hidden Connection in charge.

Turnerloose inched closer, but was instantly shuffled back again as a slew of rivals charged up on her outside. Florent Geroux was undeterred, sitting chilly atop the Brad Cox pupil turning for home. He swung his mount out two wide in the lane as Goddess of Fire (Mineshaft) charged up alongside the pacesetter. Turnerloose was grinding along the outside and forged clear late to win by a half-length. Goddess of Fire held second and Awake at Midnyte (Nyquist) filled the show spot.

La Crete's owner Stonestreet Stable tweeted that the filly suffered a condylar fracture and is a good candidate for surgical repair.

“To be honest I didn't know if she could handle the dirt,” said trainer Brad Cox. “She worked well enough last fall. I gave her a little bit of a break. She worked well enough here at Fair Grounds. She tries hard. Always tries hard. We saw a better version of her today than we did in California [at the Breeders' Cup]. The two logical spots are the [GII] Fair Grounds Oaks or the [GI Central Bank] Ashland.”

A debut winner on the grass at Ellis Park July 16, Turnerloose romped by five lengths in the Aristocrat Juvenile Fillies S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 6. Setting the pace in Keeneland's grassy GII Jessamine S. Oct. 13, she was run down late by California Angel (California Chrome) and forced to settle for third and faded to 14th when last seen in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf S. at Del Mar Nov. 5.

Pedigree Notes:
Turnerloose is the fourth graded winner and one of seven black-type achievers for her young sire Nyquist. She is one of 247 black-type winners for her legendary broodmare sire A.P. Indy and the 117th graded scorer out of one of his daughters. The winner's unraced dam Goaltending is a daughter of Grade I winner Game Face (Menifee). The 11-year-old mare did not have a foal in 2020, but had an Arrogate filly in 2021 and a City of Light filly Jan. 12 of this year.
