Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: May 30, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Sunday running at Chukyo Racecourse, including the return of last-out Group 3 winner Shivaji (First Samurai). Over at Tokyo, a field of 17 is set for the world's richest Derby, the G1 Tokyo Yushun, headed by the undefeated Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}):

PRECIOUS GOLD (f, 3, Speightstown–Pressurizing, by Henrythenavigator) debuts in the Sunday Racing colors and was acquired in utero after her dam was led out unsold on a bid of $875K at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Pressurizing is a daughter of Vertigineux (Kris S.), the dam of Horse of the Year and three-time Eclipse Award winner Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}); MGISW Balance (Thunder Gulch); and Where's Bailey (Aljabr), the stakes-winning dam of MGSW She's Not Here (Street Cry {Ire}). Precious Gold's year-older full-sister Precious Girl was sold for $375K at the same FTKNOV sale and is a winner in Japan. B-Northern Farm (KY)

10th-CKO, Azuchijo S.-Listed, ¥47.6m ($437k), 4yo/up, 1400mT
SHIVAJI (h, 6, First Samurai–Indian Bay, by Indian Charlie), a $90K Keeneland September yearling that blossomed into a $540K OBS April juvenile, has amassed an excellent record of 6-5-3 and has banked better than $1.7 million from 22 Japanese starts, the nine most recent of which have come on the turf and capped by a 1 1/4-length success in the G3 Silk Road S. at this venue Jan. 31 (see below, gate 13). The 6-year-old is out of a daughter of GSW Buy the Barrel (E Dubai), the dam of English GSP Mise En Rose (War Front) and MSP Stave (Ghostzapper). B-Hinkle Farms (KY)

JOYOUS CHANT (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Sweet Chant, by Distorted Humor) cost $140K as a weanling at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November sale, and the fact he was purchased by the Godolphin braintrust is no surprise, as the March foal is out of a half-sister to Campanologist (Kingmambo), winner of five Group 1 races for Sheikh Mohammed's operation in Germany and Italy and winner of group races in England and on World Cup night in Dubai. The colt's third dam was Canadian Horse of the Year Glorious Song (Halo), the full-sister to Saint Ballado, and dam of such luminaries as Singspiel (Ire) and Rahy (Blushing Groom {Fr}). His five-time stakes-winning dam has already been responsible for SW American Frolic (Blame) and SP Mc Awesome (Super Saver) and is herself a half-sister to GSW & MGISP Super Frolic (Pine Bluff). LADY MERCY (f, 3, American Pharoah–Two Oceans, by Cape Town) has improved with a stretch-out to two turns, finishing third in his first route attempt at Kyoto Oct. 17 before defeating fellow US-bred Voix d'Ange (Curlin) in a course-and-distance test Dec. 19 (see below, SC 11). A maternal granddaughter of MSW & GSP Ocean Cat (Storm Cat), Lady Mercy hails from the extended female family of Japanese Horses of the Year Narita Brian (Jpn) (Brian's Time) and Biwa Hayahide (Jpn) (Sharrood). SATONO MUSTANG (c, 3, Mineshaft–Mare and Cher, by Old Fashioned) found only Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby points-getter Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid) too strong on his 1300-meter bow at this track Nov. 7 before posting a convincing maiden success over the same distance when last seen Nov. 21 (see below, SC 8). A half-brother to Cruise and Danze (Danza), the $25K KEESEP yearling turned $150K OBS March breezer is out of a half-sister to SW & GSP Fight On (Into Mischief) and his third dam includes Sheave (Mineshaft), the dam of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss). AIR SAGE (c, 3, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) could scarcely have been more impressive on debut, finding his best stride in the final furlong en route to a comfortable success over 2000 grassy meters at Chukyo Jan. 5 (video, SC 10). A half-brother to Japanese GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) and to Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}), victorious at Chukyo last weekend, Air Sage counts the aforementioned Glorious Song's full-sister Angelic Song as his third dam. REFRAME (f, 2, American Pharoah–Careless Jewel, by Tapit) is the latest to the races from her dam, who powered her way to a whopping 11-length victory in the 2009 GI Alabama S. and who was sold for $1.95 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2010. Careless Jewel was subsequently purchased by this breeder for $1.85 million in foal to Bodemeister at FTKNOV three years later and Reframe repaid part of that investment when hammering for $410K at Keeneland September last fall. American Pharoah has had six winners from seven to race in Japan, including G3 Unicorn S. hero Cafe Pharoah and listed winner Danon Pharaoh (Jpn). B-Summer Wind Farm (KY)

YUINO ZAPPER (c, 2, Ghostzapper–Baruta {Brz}, by Crimson Tide {Ire}), a $180K KEESEP graduate, is a son of a mare who was twice placed at Group 1 level in Brazil and was imported to this country to win the GIII Monrovia H. on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita while placing second to former ‘TDN Rising Star’ Taris (Flatter) in the GIII Rancho Bernardo H. on the main track for trainer Richard Mandella and Rio Dois Irmaos LLC. SATONO APOLLON (JPN) (c, 2, Into Mischief–Final Decision, by Super Saver) is the first foal out of her dam, a half-sister to Eclipse Award-winning female sprinter Informed Decision (Monarchos), who was acquired with this colt in utero for $425K at FTKNOV in 2017. The April foal was consigned by Northern Farm to the 2019 JRHA Select Yearling Sale, fetching ¥80 million ($737,000) from Satomi Horse Co. Final Decision is the dam of yearling filly by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) and a filly foal by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn). B-Northern Farm

The $200K KEESEP purchase is a half-sister to J R’s Holiday (Harlan’s Holiday), a stakes winner and Grade III-placed on the grass, while her dam is a half-sister to GI Sword Dancer Invitational H. hero Cetewayo (His Majesty); Dynaforce (Dynaformer), who landed the GI Beverly D. S. and GI Flower Bowl Invitational S.; GSW & GISP Bowman Mill (Kris S.); SW Ntombi (Quiet American); and MGSP De Aar (Gone West), dam of MGSW/MGISP Willcox Inn (Harlan’s Holiday). MONT PERDU (f, 4 Cairo Prince–Spanish Post, by Flatter) set track records twice in the space of three races last summer and fall at Chukyo and Kyoto and makes her first appearance since finishing down the field in Kyoto allowance company in February. On her day, she is one of the fastest female sprinters in Japan and though she tries the turf for the first time in her career, her lone try at this abbreviated trip resulted in a handy victory over a sloppy strip at Kokura last August (see below, gate 2).
