Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Apr. 16, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Nakayama Racecourses. While the 3-year-old filly set was front and center for last weekend's G1 Oka Sho, their male counterparts get their chance in Sunday's G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), and though there are no American-bred runners in the field of 18, several of the colts were produced by mares sourced at the Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland November Mixed Sales. See the front section of the paper for additional details:

Saturday, April 16, 2022
11th-HSN, Arlington Cup-G3, ¥76,000,000 ($604k), 3yo, 1mT
JASPER KRONE (c, 3, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25K Keeneland September yearling turned $90K OBS March breezer, has already punched well above his weight, with two victories and two minor placings from five starts, including a cozy success in what amounts to a first-level allowance going six furlongs at Nakayama Mar. 26 (see below, SC 2). The chestnut, who hails from the female family of Jump Start and Mastery, is joined in the field by Dugat (Practical Joke) ($190K 2yo '21 OBSMAR), whose commonly owned stable companion Jean Gros (More Than Ready) wired the field in the G2 New Zealand Trophy Apr. 9. (see below, SC 7). Blackstone Farm acquired Goodbye Stranger carrying the foal that would become MGSW & GISP Tom's Ready for $40K at Keeneland January in 2013. The mare was resold to Nursery Place for $120 with this foal in utero at KEEJAN in 2019. Jean Gros stretches back out to a mile for this first attempt at group level. MOZU BONHEUR (f, 3, Street Sense–Endless Chatter, by First Samurai) was well-beaten on debut over the dirt at Chukyo last Decembeer, but showed some improvement when tried over a nine-furlong trip on the grass at this track 17 days later. A $200K KEESEP yearling, the Apr. 7 foal is out of Endless Chatter, who carried the silks of this breeder to a victory in the Summer Colony S. at Saratoga and a third placing in the GI Beldame S. in 2014. Endless Chatter, who drops back to seven furlongs here, is a daughter of Ornate (A.P. Indy), a full-sister to Claiborne's outstanding late sire Pulpit who is also the dam of SW & G1SP Whitecliffsofdover (War Front). B-Alpha Delta Stables LLC (KY)

Notable US-Breds in Japan: Saturday, Mar. 5, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Hanshin Racecourse. Sunday's action at Nakyama features the sophomore debut of last year's champion 2-year-old male Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) in the G2 Yayoi Sho over the metric mile and a quarter. Last year's G1 Asahi Hai Futurity hero is a son of the American-sourced Dust and Diamonds (Vindication):

Saturday, March 5, 2022
2nd-HSN, ¥9,900,000 ($86k), Maiden, 3yo, 1200m
LE VERGER (f, 3, Maclean's Music–Wine Train, by Tiz Wonderful) is the second foal to race out of a daughter of the stakes-winning Stage Stop (Valid Expectation), the dam of MSW & GSP Stageplay (Curlin), GSW She Digs Me (Henny Hughes) and Mylute (Midnight Lute), third to Oxbow (Awesome Again) in the GI Preakness S. back in 2013. A $31K purchase as a short yearling at Keeneland January in 2020, Le Verger was bought back on a bid of $50K at that year's KEESEP sale and was sold for $100,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale after breezing a quarter in :21 4/5 (see below). B-Robert & Lawana Low (KY)

6th-HSN, ¥14,250,000 ($123k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
SHAILENE (f, 3, Arrogate–Amen Hallelujah, by Montbrook) completed a 1-2 finish for her late sire behind Foolish Hobby on her course-and-distance debut Nov. 29 and most recently proved narrowly best going this same trip at Chukyo Jan. 9 (see below, SC 10). A daughter of the dual Group II winner and six-time Grade I-placed Amen Hallelujah, the mid-May foal was a $150K KEESEP grad and matured into a $1-million OBS April breezer (:10 flat), a price bettered only by champion 'TDN Rising Star' Corniche (Quality Road). Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Feb. 27, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Sunday running at Hanshin and Nakayama Racecourses. US-bred Copano Kicking (Spring At Last) is one of many raiders that will fly the flag for Japan at this weekend's Saudi Cup meeting when he goes in defense of his title in the $1.5-million [now G3] Riyadh Cup Sprint:

Sunday, February 28, 2022
2nd-HSN, ¥9,900,000 ($86k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
HE SAID SHE SAID (f, 3, Blame–Divine Escapade, by Madcap Escapade) was acquired by Sun Valley Farm for $52K in utero at Keeneland November in 2018 and was hammered down to Paca Paca Farm on behalf of Godolphin for $55K at KEENOV 12 months later. A half-sister to SW King Of the Court (Speightstown), the January foal is out of a daughter of GI Ashland S. heroine Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), whose own GI Darley Debutante S.-winning daughter Mi Sueno (Pulpit) is the dam of Japanese Group 3 winner Mi Suerte (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}). Madcap Escapade is a half-sister to Dubai Escapade (Awesome Again), a $2-million Barretts March juvenile who carried the Darley maroon-and-white to a romping victory in the 2006 GI Ballerina Breeders' Cup S. B-Sun Valley Farm (KY)

4th-NKY, ¥9,900,000 ($86k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
BEAT EMOTION (c, 3, Quality Road–J. Quirk, by Unbridled's Song) was hammered into 3-5 favoritism for his seven-furlong debut at Tokyo Feb. 12, but could not quite overcome the widest post and settled for a close runner-up effort (see below, SC 16). A half-brother to last year's GIII Remington Park Oaks winner Lady Mystify (Bernardini), the gray made $190K at KEESEP in 2020 and improved into a $600K Fasig-Tipton Florida breezer. Beat Emotion's now-yearling half-brother by Gun Runner was purchased by Breeze Easy for $375K at KEENOV last fall. B-Scott & Evan Dilworth (KY)
