American Pharoah Colt Tries The Turf in Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Niigata Racecourse, featuring the offspring of a couple of Coolmore sires, one looking to build on a promising debut and the other looking for a second straight victory. Sunday's TDN will include four US-breds making their respective first trips to the races:

1st-NII, ¥9,900,000 ($74k), Maiden, 2yo, 2000mT
PSY BREAKER (c, 2, Uncle Mo–Downside Scenario, by Scat Daddy), a $400,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, gave an excellent account of himself going this distance at Fukushima July 10, running on gamely to be beaten a half-length into second. The Mar. 30 foal is a half-brother to 'TDN Rising Star' Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief), and his dam–who was acquired for $250,000 carrying the colt that would become Mutasaabeq at Keeneland January in 2018–was resold to Stonestreet for $1.15 million back in foal to Into Mischief at Keeneland November last fall. Downside Scenario is a half-sister to Cool Cowboy (Kodiak Kowboy), twice a Group 3-winning sprinter in Dubai. B-BlackRidge Stables LLC (KY)

9th-NII, ¥30,400,000 ($229k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
ADVANCE PHAROAH (c, 2, American Pharoah–Fair Huntress, by Tiznow) debuted with a sound runner-up effort going 1400 meters over the dirt at Tokyo June 19, but shortened up to graduate nicely over 1150 meters at Fukushima last time July 17 (see below, SC 10). The $140,000 KEESEP yearling has the pedigree to take to this new surface, as his unraced dam is a half-sister to Grade III winner Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), who produced GI American Oaks heroine Competitionofideas (Speightstown); and turf stakes winner Kolo (Dynaformer). B-John D Gunther & American Pharoah Syndicate (KY)

Also in the field are G2 UAE Derby participants Combustion (Jpn) (Discreet Cat) and Sekifu (Jpn) (Henny Hughes):

LA LA GARGOUILLE (c, 3, Classic Empire–Sweet Saturday, by Any Given Saturday), a $150K Keeneland September acquisition, is out of a winning daughter of the stakes-placed Dawn Raid (Vindication), most notably the dam of 2016 GI Preakness S., GI Haskell S. and GI Santa Anita Derby hero Exaggerator (Curlin). The colt's three-times stakes-placed third dam was responsible for Sovereign Award and dual Grade III winner Embur's Song (Unbridled's Song) from this sire line. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Saturday running at Chukyo Racecourse. The weekend's highlight takes place at Tokyo, where recent Group 2 winner Jean Gros (More Than Ready) steps up in grade for the G1 NHK Mile Cup over the metric mile:

Saturday, May 7, 2022
2nd-CKO, ¥9,900,000 ($76k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
CORDON ROUGE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Champagne Room, by Broken Vow) is the first foal from her dam, the Eclipse Award-winning filly of her generation in 2016 on the strength of her victory in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filles. Champagne Room was acquired privately by Northern Farm in 2018, foaled this filly Feb. 24, 2019, and was covered by Justify before being exported to Japan. Cordon Rouge, who is inbred 4×3 to 1990 GI Kentucky Derby hero Unbridled, has one start to her credit, a near-miss second going this course and distance Mar. 13 (video, SC 8). The filly's second dam, Lucky to Be Me (Bernstein), was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $1.25 million in foal to Uncle Mo at Keeneland November in 2017 and is alread the dam of the Group 3-placed Fidele (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}). Notable US-Breds in Japan: April 24, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Fukushima Racecourses. Group 1 racing in Japan returns next weekend with the stayers center stage in the Tenno Sho (Spring) over two miles, but this Sunday's action sees the return of a pair of very exciting American-bred gallopers at the lower grades:

Sunday, April 24, 2022
6th-HSN, ¥14,250,000 ($111k), Allowance, 3yo, 1400m
CUTE VILLAIN (f, 3, Arrogate–She Be Wild, by Offlee Wild) cost Katsumi Yoshida $550K at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale on the occasion of her second birthday after the daughter of 2009 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly She Be Wild zipped an eighth of a mile in :10 flat (see below). The dark bay began chipping away at that investment when lengthening clear to graduate by seven lengths going this distance on Chukyo debut Jan. 29 (video, SC 10) and figures tough to handle in this second go. B-Nancy Mazzoni (KY)

9th-FKS, ¥19,530,000 ($152k), Allowance, 3yo, 1200mT
GRAN APLAUSO (c, 3, Gun Runner–Fiducia, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the first winner on turf from his exciting sire (by Candy Ride {Arg})'s first crop when carrying Yutaka Take to a one-length debut in one of last year's early newcomers' races at Sapporo June 20 (see below, SC 16). Ticketed for group company off that effort, he suffered an injury which has kept him on the sidelines for the past 10 months. The colt's stakes-winning and Group 3-placed dam is a daughter of champion Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who is also responsible for MGSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy) and MSW & MGSP Faridat (Kingmambo). B-North Hills Co Limited (KY)

11th-HSN, Yomiuri Milers' Cup-G2, ¥114m ($890k), 4/up, 1mT
AIR FANDITHA (h, 5, Hat Trick {Jpn}–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) is one of four winners from four to race out of a winning half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), whose daughter Yuugiri (Shackleford) will carry the silks of these breeders in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks after winning the GIII Fantasy S. last time out. Air Fanditha became the second black-type winner out of Nokaze when coming from a near-impossible position to score in listed company over this course and distance Feb. 12 (see below, SC 6). The four winners out of the mare, including GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), have combined to win an impressive 16 times on the extremely competitive JRA circuit. B-Sekie & Tsunebumi Yoshihara (KY)
