Classy Lotus Land Resumes In Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. The weekend's racing is highlighted by a high-class renewal of the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) at Toyko, and with plenty of U.S.-bred activity, here are the horses of interest for Saturday running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. Sunday's runners of note will appear in Saturday's TDN:

MODERNIZE QUEEN (f, 2, Distorted Humor–Never Grow Old, by Scat Daddy), a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, is the first foal to the races for her dam, sold for $100,000 in foal to California Chrome at Keeneland November in 2018. Never Grow Old is a winning daughter of Chilean Group 1 winner Noches de Rosa (Chi) (Stagecraft {GB}), who defeated fan favorite Megahertz (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the 2004 GI Gamely Breeders' Cup H. when trained by Richard Mandella for Gerald Ford's Diamond A Racing Corp. Breeders' Cup-winning jockey Yuga Kawada takes the ride on the chestnut, whose lone start resulted in distant fourth-place effort over nine furlongs at Niigata Aug. 7. B-Grantley Acres (KY)

11th-HSN, Swan S.-G2, ¥113m ($772k), 3yo/up, 1400mT
LOTUS LAND (m, 5, Point of Entry–Little Miss Muffet, by Freud) kicks off her autumn preparation in this spot which connections could use as a springboard to loftier targets at home and/or abroad. Victorious in six of her 15 lifetime appearances, the bay was a winner in Group 3 company last season over a mile and has proven her versatility this season with success in the G3 Kyoto Himba S. (video, SC 7) in February at this intermediate trip ahead of a fast-closing second in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1200m) (video, SC 9). She was last seen finishing 10th, but not beaten far, in the G1 Yasuda Kinen back over a mile in June and holds entries for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile and G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint in December. American Pharoah Set To Pick Up Another Japanese Winner

ADVANCE PHAROAH (c, 2, American Pharoah–Fair Huntress, by Tiznow) turned in a promising debut when runner-up going seven furlongs at Tokyo June 19 (see below, SC 12) and has every right to improve for the effort. A $140,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by trainer Hideyuki Mori, the chestnut is out of an unraced half-sister to Grade III winner Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), the dam of GI American Oaks winner Competitionofideas (Speightstown), who was purchased by Shadai Farm for $1.3 million at Fasig-Tipton November in 2020. ART PEPPER (c, 2, Frosted–Tim's Girl, by Broken Vow) appeared not to handle the turf when finishing well down the field on career debut June 12 and connections will be hoping a switch to the main track will do the trick here. Purchased by Mori for $150,000 at KEESEP last fall, the gray is out of a daughter of the stakes-winning Rich Find (Exploit), whose daughter Heavenly Hellos (Overanalyze) recently took out the Horseshoe Indianapolis S. Rich Find was also responsible for Grade I-placed juvenile filly Broken Spell (Broken Vow), herself the dam of SW Lord Dragon (Oxbow). Champagne Room’s First Foal Goes For Two Straight in Japan

GLUTTON LASSIE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Brassy Lassie, by City Zip) was crunched into 7-10 favoritism for a 1400-meter Tokyo maiden last Nov. 20, but never landed a serious blow in seventh and makes her return to the races over the minimum trip Saturday. A $40K Keeneland September yearling, the February-foaled bay was knocked down for $350K at last year's OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. Glutton Lassie is the only live foal to date for her dam, a half-sister to 2015 GIII Jefferson Cup S. winner Saham (Lemon Drop Kid). The filly's stakes-winning third dam Ticket to Houston (Houston) produced GSW/MGISP Runway Model (Petionville), the dam of four-time 'TDN Rising Star' Grade I winner and current Gainesway stallion McKinzie (Street Sense). 8th-HSN, ¥14,670,000 ($111k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
CORDON ROUGE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Champagne Room, by Broken Vow) just failed at odds-on going this distance on Chukyo debut Mar. 13, but got it right last time, carrying the visiting Damian Lane to a popular four-length graduation at that same track and trip (see below, SC 10). The bay is the first foal from her dam, who secured an Eclipse Award with a victory in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Champagne Room's Japan-based 3-year-old half-brother Fidele (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) was third at Group 3 level last term and is listed-placed this season. B-Northern Farm (KY)

The filly's third dam Colour Chart (Mr. Prospector), three times a winner at group level in France and placed in no fewer than three Grade Is in this country, was responsible for Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly Tempera (A.P. BAHIR DAR (c, 3, American Pharoah–Llanarmon, by Sky Mesa) has yet to run a bad one in three starts to date, having finished second in his first two appearances at Hanshin late last year before breaking through with a facile maiden victory at Kokura Jan. 29. Shadai Corporation privately acquired the late April foal's dam, winner of the 2013 GII Natalma S., in 2018 and she was covered in Kentucky by Mendelssohn before her export to Japan. She produced a filly by the latter in 2020. B-Shadai Corporation (KY)

CORDON ROUGE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Champagne Room, by Broken Vow) is the first foal for her dam, the 2016 champion 2-year-old filly and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine who produced this filly Feb. 24, was covered by Justify and sent off to Japan. Champagne Room, who dropped a colt by the Triple Crown winner at Northern Farm Mar. 14, 2020, is a daughter of Lucky To Be Me (Bernstein), who was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.25 million at Keeneland November in 2017 before going on to produce GSP Fidele (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}). Lucky To Be Me passed away in 2021. American Pharoah has sired 75% winners to starters in Japan (21/28). B-Northern Farm (KY)
