Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: August 2 & 3, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. NILE RIVER (c, 3, American Pharoah–Jeweliana, by Smart Strike), a $235K Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling turned $775K Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile, got his career off on the right foot, scoring by a half-length over Tokyo’s one-turn dirt mile last November. He was last seen in the Listed Hyacinth S. at headquarters Feb. 22, finishing well down the field behind future G3 Unicorn S. hero Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah). Nile River’s dam is a daughter of Roshani (Fantastic Light), who did her best running on turf, winning a trio of graded stakes and nearly a half-million dollars. B-Rosedown Racing Stable LLC (KY)

VANISHING POINT (c, 2, Tapit–Unrivaled Belle, by Unbridled’s Song) is the full-brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella, a treble Grade I winner for Don Alberto Stable, who acquired GI Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic heroine Unrivaled Belle for $2.8 million at Keeneland November in 2011. Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm bid $3.8 million to purchase Unrivaled Belle at KEENOV in 2016 carrying a full-sibling to Unique Bella and sold this offspring for $1.5 million at KEESEP last fall. KITTEN’S WALTZ (f, 2, Air Force Blue–Dance With Kitten, by Kitten’s Joy) is set to be the first Japanese starter for her sire and is the first foal out of a winning full-sister to dual GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic hero Divisidero, who broke his maiden in his first career start going two turns over the Gulfstream turf course. Campaigning in the Carrot Farm colors, the dark bay is kin to a Shadai-bred yearling filly by Carpe Diem and a foal half-brother by Collected. Divisidero and Collected both stand at Airdrie Stud. BEST MAGIC (c, 4, Speightstown-Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun), a half-brother to champion and Hill ‘n’ Dale stallion Good Magic (Curlin), was a good second on his career debut and returns to the JRA circuit off a trio of dominating victories by a combined 18 lengths against easier at Nagoya on the NAR circuit. His dual stakes-winning and Grade II-placed dam is a half-sister to GSW Take the Ribbon (Chester House), the SW/GSP duo of Flash Forward (Curlin) and Flash Mash (Smarty Jones) and MSW Bright Magic (Prized). The $825K KEESEP yearling had finished in the top three in each of his prior four starts, including a third in the Listed Wakaba S. over this course and distance Mar. 21 (see below, gate 7). American Seed is a full-brother to SW & GSP Sweet Tapper and a half to MGSP Perregaux (Distorted Humor). Ltd., the late February foal is a half-sister to Princesinha Julia (Pioneerof the Nile), winner of last year’s Trapeze S., while her second dam Ile de France (Storm Cat) is a Grade I-placed half-sister to Darley America’s Bernardini (A.P.
