Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Chukyo Racecourse. A pair of US-bred runners entered for Sunday’s races and making their career debuts at Chukyo will feature in Saturday’s TDN:

GALLANT MANNER (c, 3, More Than Ready–River Cruise, by Not For Love) debuts in the Godolphin blue and was acquired by Harry Sweeney’s Paca Paca Farm for $320K at Keeneland November in 2018, the most expensive of eight of this legendary sire’s foals reported as sold that year. A full-brother to SW More Than a Cruise and a half to SP Oriental Cruise (Orientate), the February foal is out of a dual stakes-winning half-sister to GSW Secret River (Secret Odds). B-Athens Woods LLC & More Than Ready Syndicate (KY)

7th-CKO, ¥13,830,000 ($133k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
SKY NILE (f, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Joyful Victory, by Tapit) looks to take her record to two wins from two starts, having broken her maiden by 3 1/2 lengths at Nakayama Dec. 6 (video, gate 12). A half-sister to SP Jennifer’s Dream (Medaglia d’Oro) and SP Saqqara King (American Pharoah), the gray is the last US-bred produce for her Grade I-winning dam, who was acquired privately from Aaron and Marie Jones in 2017. The mare’s foal of 2019, an American-bred, but Japanese-foaled colt by Kitten’s Joy, fetched ¥105m ($982,202) from Danox Co. at last year’s JRHA Select Yearling Sale. B-Teruya Yoshida

PARADISUM (c, 3, Medaglia d’Oro-Taste of Heaven {Aus}, by Encosta de Lago {Aus}) tries winners for the first time after graduating impressively over this distance at Kyoto Oct. 31 (see below, gate 1). The colt’s dam, an A$1.5m ($1.389m) purchase by James Harron Bloodstock out of the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, is a full-brother to G1SW sire Manhattan Rain (Aus) and SW & G1SP Echoes of Heaven (Aus); and is a half-brother to the legendary Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill), G1SW Platinum Scissors (Aus) and to GSW Sliding Cube (Aus) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), the dam of ‘TDN Rising Star’ and successful young sire Rubick (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}). Paradisum, a half-brother to Canadian Grade III winner and $625K KEESEP grad Heavenly Curlin (Curlin), was bought back on a bid of $235K as a KEENOV weanling and fetched $400K at KEESEP in 2019. AMERICAN YELL (c, 3, Tapit–Sindy With An S, by Broken Vow), a $700K Keeneland September purchase by owner Katsumi Yoshizawa, is a full-brother to SW & GSP My Miss Tapit and the GSP duo of I’ll Wrap It Up and Rattataptap, and is the 19-10 favorite to improve off a strong runner-up effort over this course and distance when last seen Dec. 13 (video, gate 12). Yoshizawa, who campaigns 2019 Triple Crown participant Master Fencer (Jpn) (Just A Way {Jpn}), has been represented by four Tapit winners in Japan, including the listed-placed American Seed. 3rd-NKY, ¥11,400,000 ($110k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
WELL SNIPER (f, 3, Violence–Down the Well {Ire}, by Mujadil) is the latest to make the races for her dam, whose three winners from as many to hit the track include SW Aqua Frio (Uncle Mo) and Karak (Karakontie {Jpn}), the latter of which broke her maiden at first asking sprinting on turf at Belmont before winning the 2019 Tyro S. on the grass and the 2020 Cincinnati Trophy on the Polytrack.. Well Sniper was bought back on a bid of $37K at KEENOV in 2018 and fetched $35K at KEEJAN a couple of months later. B-Parrish Hill Farm & Amanda Roach Cole (KY)

8th-NKY, ¥21,000,000 ($204k), Allowance, 4yo/up, 1200m
SUI (f, 4, Candy Ride {Arg}–Eltimaas, by Ghostzapper), the half-sister to champion and MGISW Drefong (Gio Ponti), doubled her win tally when taking out an Oct. 3 allowance over track and trip first off a six-month absence before finishing down the field in her last visit to the post Oct. 25. A $300K KEESEP yearling turned $675K OBS March breezer, Sui is out of a half-sister to champion Action This Day (Kris S.). B-Machmer Hall, Carrie & Craig Brogden (KY)

10th-NKY, Junior Cup-Listed, ¥38,370,000 ($372k), 3yo, 1600mT
ASCALON (c, 3, Speightstown–Coco As In Chanel, by Awesome Again) validated 4-5 favoritism when breaking his maiden at first asking going 1200 meters at Sapporo Aug. 22 (see below, gate 6), but was well-beaten in his first try against winners three weeks later and resumes here. The stakes-winning Coco As In Chanel was purchased by SF Bloodstock and Newgate Farm for $150K in foal to Violence at KEENOV in 2018 and produced a filly by Newgate’s Russian Revolution (Aus) in 2020. FRANCE GO DE INA (c, 2, Will Take Charge–Dreamy Blues, by Curlin) was a sound fourth behind next-out Cattleya Sho hero Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid) in a 1300-meter newcomers’ event at Toyko Nov. 7 before switching to this track and distance to post a convincing maiden-breaking victory Nov. 28 (see below, #10). A $100K Keeneland September yearling, the chestnut is out of a half-sister to GSW Shawklit Mint (Air Forbes Won) and is the early 6-5 favorite to take this next step. BLACK LOTUS (c, 2, American Pharoah–Arravale, by Arch) is the latest to make the races from his dam, Canada’s Horse of the Year and Sovereign Award-winning turf female of 2006, whose victories included the GI E.P. Taylor S. at home and the GI Del Mar Oaks south of the border. The dam of GSP Nancy O (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), Arravale was purchased by John Moores and Charles Noell’s Merribelle Stable for $490K in foal to Animal Kingdom at KEENOV in 2016. Black Lotus, who could become his sire’s 10th Japanese winner, was a $200K KEESEP purchase. B-Merribelle Stable (KY)

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Nakayama and Chukyo Racecourses. The latter plays host to the G1 Champions Cup Sunday, which features an intriguing clash between reigning Japanese champion dirt horse Chrysoberyl (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}), the country’s top dirt 3-year-old Café Pharoah (American Pharoah) and dual-surface Group 1 winner Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}), having his final career start:

JASPER GOLD (c, 2, Khozan–Gracious Lady, by Put It Back) went very close in his first two career starts–both over this trip and surface–missing by a half-length when favored at Fukushima Nov. 8 and by a neck over course and distance two weeks later. The Florida-bred is the first foal from his dam, an unplaced half-sister to SP Lucky Peridot (Itsmyluckyday), and cost $100K at this year’s OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. The deeper female family includes Eclipse Award winner Storm Song (Summer Squall). B-Randy Lee Myers (FL)

6th-NKY, ¥13,400,000 ($129k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
SKY NILE (f, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Joyful Victory, by Tapit) is the final US-bred produce for her Grade I-winning dam, whose foal of 2017, the colt Saqqara King (American Pharoah) was stakes-placed three times in France as a juvenile. Joyful Victory was acquired privately by this breeder after being withdrawn from Fasig-Tipton November in 2017, dropped this foal and was covered by Kitten’s Joy before being exported. That produce, a colt, fetched ¥105 million ($982,202) as a yearling at this year’s JRHA Select Sale. Joyful Victory produced a colt by Daiwa Major (Jpn) this year. B-Teruya Yoshida (KY)
