BEYOND THE FATHER (JPN) (c, 2, Curlin–Galileo's Song {Jpn}, by Galileo {Ire}), twice graded-placed on the grass for Dell Ridge Farm and Chad Brown, sold for $1 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. Galileo's Song is out of Song to Remember (Storm Cat), who fetched $1.6 million in foal to Tiznow at Fasig-Tipton November in 2006 not long after her daughter Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song) came from last to win the GI Garden City Breeders' Cup S. in New York. SCATTER SEED (JPN) (f, 3, Uncle Mo–Scatladybdancing, by Scat Daddy), a distant sixth on Tokyo debut in a single juvenile appearance, cut back in trip for a course-and-distance test and just missed when last seen July 24. The filly's stakes-placed dam, a full-sister to SW Ultima D, was acquired for $390K with the filly in utero at KEENOV in 2017. This is the extended female family of G1SW and successful young sire No Nay Never (Scat Daddy). B-Oiwake Farm

CARABELLA (JPN) (f, 3, Ghostzapper–Include Betty, by Include) is the first produce for her dam, last-to-first winner of the 2015 GI Mother Goose S. for Brereton C. Jones and Tim Thornton and trainer Tom Proctor. The filly hails from an active female family, as Include Betty is the half-sister to Gagetown (Exaggerator), narrow winner of the June 4 Prairie Mile and a latest third in the Iowa Derby July 2. The third dam includes GISW My Trusty Cat (Tale of the Cat) and GSP Entrustment (Forestry). B-Northern Racing

8th-HAK, ¥14,360,000 ($131k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 2000mT
AIR SAGE (c, 3, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker), a half-brother to GSW and $1.6-million earner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), made an enormous debut impression when scoring over this trip at Chukyo Jan. 5 (see below, gate 10) before finishing a close fifth when tried over 2400 meters Feb. 7. Produced by a half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro) and from the deeper female family of Devil's Bag and Saint Ballado, Air Sage will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire, who currently holds a 22-win lead atop the JRA jockeys' premiership. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or -conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hakodate and Kokura Racecourses. A pair of US-breds see action at group level on the turf this weekend, as Lotus Land (Point of Entry) contests the G3 Chukyo Kinen (1800m), while Group 1 winner Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) tries the grass for the first time in the G3 Hakodate Kinen (2000m). Both races take place Sunday afternoon:

PREFERRED RUN (f, 3, Mshawish–Little Miss Muffet, by Scat Daddy) is the year-younger half-sister to the aforementioned Lotus Land, and while she hasn't been a factor in three tries on the grass to begin her career, neither has she been beaten by excessive margins in any of those appearances. The daughter of a dual-surface Grade I-winning sire, Preferred Run has license to take to this new surface, as her female family includes champion Brocco (Kris S.), among others. DANON PEEKABOO (JPN) (c, 2, Kitten's Joy–Joyful Victory, by Tapit) backs up on two weeks' rest, having finished a debut second to champion Champagne Room (Broken Vow)'s well-meant half-brother Fidele (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) after making the majority of the running over this course and distance (see below, gate 1) July 4. Grade I winner Joyful Victory was acquired privately by Shadai Farm in 2016, was bred to American Pharoah the following winter and produced the filly Sky Nile, herself a debut winner on dirt last December. Danon Peekaboo, a half-brother to SP Jennifer's Dream (Medaglia d'Oro) and MSP Saqqara King (American Pharoah), fetched ¥105 million ($982,202) from Danox Co. Ltd. at last year's JRHA Select Sale. B-Shadai Farm

12th-HAK, ¥28,600,000 ($260k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1200mT
LECCE BAROQUE (f, 4, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) ran a hole in the wind in her first two starts, scoring by a combined 19 lengths (see below, gate 10), but the wheels came off when ninth to Cafe Pharoah at 2-1 in last year's G3 Unicorn S. She has since posted a runner-up effort from three trips to the post, but the $410,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $525,000 OBS March breezer makes an interesting shift to the turf for the first time here. Produced by a half-sister to SW No Mo Dough (Uncle Mo), Lecce Baroque is bred on the exact same cross as GISW Gomo and GSW Lost Raven and on a similar cross to the late Laoban. B-MMM Stables (KY)

KARNAK (JPN) (c, 3, American Pharoah–Kitten's Dumplings, by Kitten's Joy) is the first Japanese-foaled produce from his dam, winner of the 2013 GI QE II Challenge Cup at Keeneland and acquired privately by Shadai Farm in 2016. The mare's overall first foal is Karnak's full-brother Abul Haul, one of 14 winners from 18 to race in Japan for their history-making sire. Well-beaten on debut in February, Karnak stripped significantly trimmer for his second career appearance going a mile at Tokyo June 27 and finished a much-improved fifth. Kitten's Dumplings is a full-sister to GSW Granny's Kitten and SW & GSP Granny Mc's Kitten. B-Shadai Farm

The $100K Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Showcase grad switches to the main track for this and has a license to improve for it, as he is out of a half-sister to a pair of black-type winners, including one on the dirt. The April foal's MGSW third dam Recognizable (Seattle Slew) was a half-sister to Ogden Phipps's Awe Inspiring (Slew O'Gold), winner of the 1989 GI Flamingo S. and GI American Derby and third to Sunday Silence and stablemate Easy Goer in that year's GI Kentucky Derby. ELEPHANTINE (JPN) (f, 3, American Pharoah–Sweetie Girl {Arg}, by Star Dabbler) is the first foal to race from her dam, winner of the G1 Gran Premio de Potrancas at San Isidro Racecourse in May 2015 (video, SC 7). Subsequently exported to the U.S., Sweetie Girl was covered by this Triple Crown winner in 2017 and made her way to Japan, where she foaled this filly Feb. 11, 2018. Among American Pharoah's 13 Japanese winners (from 16 starters) is G1SW Cafe Pharoah, who–like Elephantine–was produced from a Halo-line dam. B-Shimokobe Farm

5th-TOK, ¥13,830,000 ($127k), Allowance, 3yo, 1600m
ANNUNCIATION (c, 3, Union Rags–Acquant, by Giant's Causeway) has made all three of his career starts to date over this course and distance, winning his maiden at first asking before a pair of slow-starting, fast-finishing runner-up efforts at this level. A $230K Keeneland September graduate, the May 12 foal is out of a winning daughter of MGSW Social Queen (Dynaformer), the dam of 2015 GI Belmont Derby winner Force the Pass (Speightstown). A short price is all but guaranteed, but this race is his for the taking with a clean break. B-Colts Neck Stables LLC (KY)

6th-NII, ¥14,360,000 ($132k), Allowance, 4yo/up, 1800m
BONDING TIME (c, 4, Kitten's Joy–Imagistic, by Deputy Minister), purchased in utero for $30K at KEEJAN in 2017, was a $65K KEENOV foal and matured into a $210K KEESEP yearling. The full-brother to SW & MGSP Gentleman's Kitten made one appearance as a 3-year-old, finishing well down the track in an 11-furlong turf maiden at Hanshin 14 months ago and makes a switch to the main track for this allowance test.
