Notable US-Bred and -Sired Runners in Japan: June 4-5, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo Racecourse. The penultimate Group 1 event of the spring racing calendar is set for Sunday at Tokyo, which hosts the G1 Yasuda Kinen. Two-time G1 February S. hero Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) tries the grass for just the second time in his career, while the bonny mare Lotus Land (Point of Entry) tries to improve on her cracking runner-up effort when last seen in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in late March. Elsewhere in Japan over the weekend are the first foals to race by the expatriated Beach Patrol and Mind Your Biscuits, among other Japanese stallions:

SATONO MISCHIEF (JPN) (c, 2, Into Mischief–Play Pretty, by Indian Charlie) is out of a daughter of Broodmare of the Year Oatsee (Unbridled), whose notable produce include treble Grade I winner Shackleford (Forestry); GISW Lady Joanne (Orientate); MGSWs Baghdaria (Royal Academy) and Afleeting Lady (Afleet Alex); and SW/MGSP Stephanoatsee (A.P. Indy). Shadai Farm acquired dam Play Pretty for $750K with this colt in utero at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. MANIBHADRA (c, 2, Speightstown–Trini Brewnette, by Milwaukee Brew) is the first foal from his dam, a two-time Ontario-bred stakes winner and daughter of Sovereign Award winner Dancing Allstar (Millennium Allstar), herself the dam of Canadian champion female sprinter Summer Sunday (Silent Name {Jpn}). Corser Thoroughbreds purchased Trini Brewnette for $195K at Keeneland November in 2019 and this colt paid most of that bill when hammering to Hideyuki Mori for $225K at KEESEP last fall. Speightstown's 35 winner from 43 Japanese starts includes G1SW Mozu Superflare and GSW Matera Sky. B-Corser Thoroughbreds (KY)

CHARITABLE THOUGHT (c, 3, Nyquist–Relaxing Green, by Formal Gold) finished a distant fifth behind wide-margin maiden winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile participant Jasper Great (Arrogate) in a single appearance at two over 1800 meters in October (video SC 7). A $335K purchase as a weanling at Fasig-Tipton November in 2019, the Apr. 19 foal is a half-brother to GISW Marley's Freedom (Blame) and SW Noble Charlotte (Include) and hails from the female family of GISW Noble Bird (Birdstone). LOGI MUSTANG (JPN) (f, 3, Frosted–Luvthatmustang, by Candt Ride {Arg}) was produced by a daughter of MGSW & GISP Proposed (Benchmark) and was acquired in utero for $175K at Keeneland November in 2018. From the extended Wygod family of GSW Prospect Park (Tapit) from the same sire line, Logi Mustang was offered as a yearling at the JRHA Select Sale in 2020, hammering for $140,315. B-Araki Farm

11th-CKO, G3 Kisaragi Sho-G3, ¥76.6m ($664k), 3yo, 2000mT
AIR ANEMOI (c, 3, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) overcame a wide draw and led ever step of the way to earn his diploma by three lengths going this distance at Hanshin Dec. 19 (video, SC 9). The May 7 foal is the latest promising runner for his dam, who is also responsible for Japanese Group 2 winner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}), a winner of four races in Japan and Air Amemoi's full-brother Air Sage, a three-time winner from just five starts. Nokaze is herself a half-sister to Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), the stakes-winning dam of Yuugiri (Shackleford), a latest second in the GII Golden Rod S. in November who could make her 3-year-old debut in graded company at Oaklawn over the coming weeks. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. With plenty activity this weekend, we will serve up two helpings of American-bred and -sired runners, beginning with Saturday's runners at Hanshin and Tokyo. Sunday's featured event is the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn), which will feature 2020 Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), this year's G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero and Derby runner-up Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) and Gran Alegria (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the champion daughter of Breeders' Cup and MGISW Tapitsfly (Tapit):

BAHIR DAR (c, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Llanarmon, by Sky Mesa) is the third foal from his GII Natalma S.-winning dam, a $240K Keeneland November purchase in foal to Into Mischief in 2017 before being acquired privately by Shadai Farm in 2018. Llanarmon foaled this colt Apr. 28, 2019 and was subsequently bred to Mendelssohn prior to her export to Japan. She foaled a filly by the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winning half-brother to Into Mischief last April. B-Shadai Farm (KY)

5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT
TOSEN CHIARA (JPN) (f, 2, American Pharoah–Giulia, by Sky Mesa) is the first produce of a dam who broke her maiden by many at two in Brazil before continuing her career in Uruguay, where she won the G1 Gran Premio de Ciudad de Montevideo on the dirt by 10 1/2 lengths in 2016 (see below, saddle cloth 7). Well beaten in two starts for trainer Michael Matz in this country in 2018, Giulia was acquired privately by this breeder and was covered by American Pharoah before continuing on to Japan. The bay hails from the extended female family of champion Chief's Crown (Danzig), winner of the inaugural GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 1984. B-Takaya Shimakawa

SHIRAKINU (f, 2, Frosted–Meets Expectations, by Valid Expectations), a half-sister to dual-surface GISW and Hill 'n' Dale stallion World of Trouble (Kantharos), SW Money Or Love (J Be K) and SP Alfie Solomons (Kantharos), cost Harry Sweeney's Paca Paca Farm $335K on behalf of Godolphin to buy out breeding partners Darsan Inc. at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The Florida-bred filly's dam is a half-sister to dual GII Woodford S. winner, two-time GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint alum and popular young Florida stallion Bucchero (Kantharos). LADY SHIKA (f, 2, American Freedom–Lakefront, by Deputy Minister) becomes the first Japanese starter for her freshman sire (by Pulpit). The Feb. 18 foal, a half-sister to SW Dattts Our Girl (Thunder Gulch), was produced by an unraced daughter of Lakeway (Seattle Slew), a four-time Grade I winner and runner-up in the 1994 GI Kentucky Oaks and third behind Inside Information (Private Account) in her romping 1995 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff score. Lakeway's SW daughter Sluice (Seeking the Gold) was responsible for GISW Mushka (Empire Maker), second to Life Is Sweet (Storm Cat) in the 1999 GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. Sluice is also the dam of Aqua Julia (Exaggerator), who flew home from far back to graduate at first asking on Santa Anita debut Oct. 8. A $22K short yearling at KEEJAN last year, Lady Chika was RNAd for $45K at KEESEP and fetched $160K from Hideyuki Mori at this year's OBS March after breezing an eighth of a mile in the bullet time of :9 4/5. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Chukyo and Nakayama Racecourses. A trio of American-bred runners takes their place in a field of 18 for Sunday's Sprinters' S. at the latter venue as Group 1 racing returns to Japan for the first time since late June:

BEYOND THE FATHER (JPN) (c, 2, Curlin–Galileo's Song {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) is the first foal from his multiple Grade III-placed dam, a $1-million purchase by Shimokobe Farm with this colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2018. Galileo's Song is a half-sister to Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song), who came from 11th and last to validate favoritism in the 2006 GI Garden City Breeders' Cup S. on the grass at Belmont Park. Beyond the Father debuted with a five-length victory on the dirt at Niigata Aug. 7 (see below, gate 7), but tries the turf this time around. Mirco Demuro has a return call. B-Shimokobe Farm

SEA VIXEN (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai) has burned money as the favorite in her first two trips to the races, each over the metric seven furlongs, finishing a debut third at Sapporo Aug. 22 before improving one spot at that track Sept. 5. A $130,000 KEESEP yearling turned $500,000 OBS March breezer, the bay is out of a half-sister to MSP Pull Dancer (Pulpit), the dam of the versatile MGSW & MGISP Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday) and GSW Brave Nation (Pioneerof the Nile). The filly's third dam Emmaus (Silver Deputy), a half-sister to Caress (Storm Cat) and Bernstein (Storm Cat) et. al., produced Horse of the Year Wise Dan's sire Wiseman's Ferry (Hennessy). Breeze Easy acquired the filly's dam for $50,000 in foal to Kitten's Joy at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017. B-Breeze Easy LLC (KY)

4th-CKO, ¥13,400,000 ($120k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
ARME MATE (c, 2, Frosted–G Note, by Medaglia d'Oro) breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 flat at this year's OBS April Sale and was hammered down for $210,000. The New York-bred is out of a daughter of these breeders' GSW Seeking the Ante (Seeking the Gold), whose MSW daughter Mineralogist (Mineshaft) bred SW Can You Diggit (Tiznow). The Bromans acquired the colt's multiple Grade I-winning third dam Antespend (Spend A Buck) for $900,000 at Keeneland April in 1997 and from her, bred Friends Lake (A.P. Indy), winner of the 2004 GI Florida Derby. B-Chester & Mary Broman (NY)

STRIKE RICH (JPN) (c, 2, American Pharoah–Opulence, by Giant's Causeway), a half-brother to Japanese winner Fort Wadsworth (Verrazano), is the first Japanese-foaled produce for his dam, an unraced daughter of Eclipse Award and GI Belmont S. winner Rags To Riches (A.P. Indy). Third dam Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister), the $14-million mare, also produced Rags To Riches's Belmont-winning half-brother Jazil (Seeking the Gold); GSW/G1SP Casino Drive (Mineshaft); SW Man of Iron (Giant's Causeway); and the dam of GISW Streaming (Smart Strike) and SWs Treasuring (Smart Strike) and Cascading (A.P.
