Hunch players the world over had to delight in a colt named Howling Time–out of a mare named Werewolf–winning the Street Sense S. at Churchill on Halloween. The 9-5 choice appeared to hesitate for a fraction of a second leaving the gate, but was swiftly up to a joint third while in the clear on the outside. He stayed in striking range through reasonable :24.65 and :49.31 fractions, inched up on the turn, and emerged from the fray with the lead. Rider Joe Talamo threw a few crosses and kept Howling Time's mind on business in early stretch, but turned it into a hand ride in late stretch once it was apparent the dark bay had the win secure. He crossed the wire 3 1/4 lengths on top.

“It's pretty fitting a horse with a Halloween theme wins today,” said winning trainer Dale Romans. “I'm just glad it was ours. He won impressively in his debut last month. He's shown us in his training and his pedigree that he should like stretching out in distance. So, winning at six furlongs on debut was very impressive. Then, to come back and do that today showed how talented he is.”

Howling Time came into the Street Sense with a debut win Sept. 25 over this track at 2 1/2 furlongs shorter than Sunday's race. In a similar trip, he had tracked while wide that day, then wore down the leaders to score by 1 1/2 lengths, getting an 81 Beyer for the effort. The Street Sense marked his first black-type win and the juvenile remained undefeated in two starts.

Werewolf hails from the same family as $2.1-million Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old Desert Party (Street Cry {Ire}), who would go on to be a GSW in the U.S. and a MGSW in the U.A.E. Howling Time Gets First Stakes Win In Street Sense

After stalking the pace set by Sport Pepper throughout the 1 1/16 miles, Howling Time took over the lead midstretch to win Sunday's Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. In only the second start of his short career, the 2-year-old son of Not This Time draw off for a 3 1/4-length victory.

Through early fractions of :24.65 and :49.31, Sport Pepper held a one-length lead over the field of seven, with Red Danger and Skippylongstocking in second and third on the backstretch. Howling Time sat fourth, starting his move as the field entered the far turn.

Around the Churchill Downs bend, Howling Time went three-wide, looming up on the outside of Sport Pepper as they hit the stretch. After pulling even with the frontrunner briefly, Howling Time poured on the speed, taking over the front and pulling away in the last furlong. Red Danger was second with Red Knobs third.

“Turning for home I could feel I had a lot of horse underneath me,” said Talamo. “Around the turn, I smooched at him and he just took off. It's always special to win for these connections. This horse was very impressive today and really ran well around two turns for the first time.”

Howling Time paid $5.80, $4.00, and $2.80. Red Danger paid $5.40 and $3.40. Red Knobs paid $2.80.

Bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm, Howling Time is out of the Arch mare Werewolf. Trained by Dale Romans, the 2-year-old colt is owned by Albaugh Family Stables. Consigned by Paramount Sales, Howling Time was sold to the Albaugh Family for $200,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With this win in the Street Sense, the colt has career earnings of $190,600.

“This horse was a later purchase at Keeneland last year,” said Jason Loutsch, racing manager for Albaugh Family Stable. “We have to give the credit to Dale because he was in the back ring at the time and called us to say we had to have this colt. We knew what he did on his debut was impressive because Dale doesn't necessarily have them cranked all the way to win first out. Then, he worked well out of it and was really impressive today going two turns for the first time.”

‘Special’ Penultimate Foal Out Of Leslie’s Lady Wins On Debut At Keeneland

Clarkland Farm's homebred Marr Time added another impressive branch to her family tree when she sailed to a 2¾-length victory in her debut at Keeneland on Thursday. Ridden by Florent Geroux for Brad Cox, the 2-year-old daughter of Not This Time won the 6-furlong race in 1:11.96 as the 3-5 favorite.

“Just getting to this first start with all the expectations was a big goal for us,” said Tessa Bisha, a Kentucky assistant for Cox, who has been with the filly all year. “We were hopeful she would run like she did, but we haven't made any plans after that race. She cooled out well and she looks great this morning (Friday). She's always thought she was special.”

Marr Time is out of 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady, one of the Thoroughbred industry's all-time great producers. The best offspring of the daughter of Tricky Creek are multiple champion Beholder, Grade 1 winner and leading sire Into Mischief, and Grade 1 winner and sire Mendelssohn. Two of her offspring have topped Keeneland's September Yearling Sale: Mendelssohn at $3 million in 2016 and America's Joy at $8.2 million in 2019.

Celebrating Marr Time's winning performance was the Clarkland team of Fred and Nancy Mitchell and their family.

“Every Kentucky breeder wants to win a race at Keeneland,” the Mitchells' daughter Marty Buckner said. “It can be nerve-wracking but to find out how (good) the bloodlines are, you have to race them.”

Marr Time is the 14th foal out of Leslie's Lady, whose final offspring is the yearling Kantharos filly Love You Irene. Now 25, Leslie's Lady lives as a retiree at Clarkland, which 15 years ago bought her in foal to Orientate for $100,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The family opted to breed Leslie's Lady to Not This Time in part because he is a grandson of Storm Cat and her best offspring have been from that sire line.

“Marr Time was always easy,” Buckner said. “Leslie's Lady's best foals are always easy to raise and when you ask them to do something new, they rise to the occasion.”

Latest Foal Out of Leslie’s Lady Earns ‘Rising Star’ Tag

Clarkland Farm homebred MARR TIME (Not This Time), the penultimate foal out of outstanding blue hen Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek), made her debut a winning one at Keeneland and earned the 'TDN Rising Star' tag in the process. Showing good early speed, the 3-5 chalk sparred with 20-1 longshot Roll Baby (Runhappy) through a :22.84 opening quarter. Shaking off that foe on the backstretch, the bay jumped clear in the lane to win going away by 2 3/4 lengths. Dame Joviale (Into Mischief) was the runner-up. Marr Time is the second 'TDN Rising Star' for her young sire Not This Time, joining GISW Princess Noor.

Fred & Nancy Mitchell's Clarkland Farm purchased the golden goose that is Leslie's Lady for just $100,000 in foal to Orientate at the 2006 Keeneland November Sale and it would prove to be the bargain of a lifetime. Her 2005 foal Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) won the GI Cashcall Futurity S. for Spendthrift 13 months after that purchase. He went on to become one of the most prolific stallions of his generation and seems to just get better each year. Her fourth foal for the Clarkland team was none other than future Hall of Famer Beholder (Henny Hughes), a $180,000 KEESEP purchase by Spendthrift. The bay mare won four Eclipse awards, three Breeders' Cup races and seven other Grade I events, earning over $6.1 million before retiring to the breeding shed.

Leslie's Lady's 2013 foal, a Curlin filly named Leslie's Harmony, summoned $1.1 million from Bridlewood Farm at Keeneland September, but she did not reproduce her sibling's racetrack prowess. However, Leslie's Lady's 2015 foal outdid that filly in the sales ring and on the track. Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) topped the 2016 KEESEP sale on a final bid of $3 million from Coolmore and captured the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G2 UAE Derby. The GI Travers S. runner-up currently stands at Ashford Stud and his oldest foals are yearlings, who have been well received in the sales ring. Leslie's Lady's last foal to be offered at auction, an American Pharoah filly named America's Joy, set a new record when summoning a whopping $8.2 million from Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm at Keeneland September. Sadly, the 3-year-old filly was euthanized over the summer after suffering a career-ending injury in a workout. The 25-year-old mare's final foal is the now-yearling filly Love You Irene (Kantharos), who, like Marr Time, was retained by her breeder.
