Not So Quiet Repeats In Overskate At Woodbine

Not So Quiet defended his Overskate Stakes title in impressive fashion Saturday at Woodbine Race Course in Toronto, Ontario.

Originally slated for 7 ½-furlongs on the Inner Turf, the Ontario-sired Overskate was changed to seven panels on the Tapeta after the Greater Toronto area saw steady rainfall on Friday evening through to Saturday.

Not So Quiet, under Rafael Hernandez, rained on everyone's parade in the Toronto oval's $100,000 feature.

Just as he did last year, the Mark Casse trainee arrived at the Overskate off a win in the Vice Regent Stakes.

It was longshot Derzkii, to the outside, and Not So Quiet who were running one-two, respectively, through an opening quarter of :23.02, but by the time the field of eight (Desolator was scratched) reached the half-mile marker in :45.76, Not So Quiet was a head on top.

Hernandez and the six-year-old son of Silent Name began to easily expand their lead around the turn for home. By the time the stretch drive got underway, Not So Quiet was already widening his advantage with ease and was volumes the best at the wire, winning by 3 ½-lengths in a time of 1:21.46.

Told It All rallied to finish second, Wave Baby was third and Derzkii was fourth.

Hernandez doled out high marks for the Heste Sport homebred who has enjoyed success at various distances and on different surfaces.

“He's nice. Last race [Vice Regent], he impressed me on the turf. He came running down the lane. It was the most impressive race he had so far. But he can do anything… he can do turf, he can do synthetic, he can be on the lead, come from off the pace. No matter how the race sets up for him, he finds a way to keep going.”

Not So Quiet, who paid $3.30 to win as the 3-5 second choice, is 8-0-2 from 16 career starts.

It was a big day for Casse, who won five races on the card: Similar Taste (Race 1), Ostracize (Race 2), Swot Analysis (Race 4), La Libertee (Race 5), and Not So Quiet (Race 9).

Not So Quiet Repeats In Vice Regent Stakes At Woodbine

Not So Quiet, with Rafael Hernandez aboard, rallied along the rail to notch his second straight Vice Regent Stakes score, Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

The six-year-old son of Silent Name (JPN), bred and owned by Heste Sport Inc., came into the $150,000 five-furlong Inner Turf race off a third-place effort in the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes on August 1 at Woodbine.

Sent off as the 7-5 choice, Not So Quiet, trained by Mark Casse, was shuffled back at the outset, and sat sixth as longshots Rockcrest and Alacritous took the field through an opening quarter-mile timed in :21.72.

Rockcrest, longest shot on the board at 44-1, was still calling the shots as the field straightened for home, while Hernandez looked for room to take aim at the leader, eventually finding a seam along the inside.

At the wire, Not So Quiet was a 1 ½-length winner, with a game Rockcrest taking second, 1 ½-lengths ahead of City Boy.

“The plan was to be close to the pace because with five-eighths you have to be on the engine,” said Hernandez, who teamed with Casse earlier on the card to take the Seagram Cup aboard Tap It to Win. “But the horse next to me, the seven (City Boy) in the gate, he was acting a little weird and then my horse started to get nervous. They opened the gate and he came out a little bit slowly from what we wanted to do, but we came up with Plan B, and then everything came out good.”

The final time over firm going was :56.25.

“He's great,” said Hernandez. “He's a racehorse anywhere you want to put him. You ask him what to do and he'll do it.”

It was a return to winning form for Not So Quiet, who rhymed off two straight scores to complete his 2020 campaign, taking the Vice Regent on October 4 and Overskate Stakes on October 31.

The gelding, who broke his maiden first time out on July 18, 2018, now sports a mark of 7-0-2 from 15 starts.

Not So Quiet paid $5 for today's win.

Souper Stonehenge Super Again In Vigil At Woodbine

For the second time in two races, Souper Stonehenge got the better of Pink Lloyd, taking the Grade 3 Vigil Stakes at Woodbine Race Track in Toronto, Ontario. Souper Stonehenge had ended Pink Lloyd's run of consecutive victories in the Jacques Cartier in their last meeting and got the better of the Sovereign Award-winning sprinter again Sunday.

Trained by Mark Casse, Souper Stonehenge took the lead early in the six-furlong sprint, striding out to lead by a length over Green Light Go and Not So Quiet, with Pink Lloyd sitting back in fifth. Around the race's only turn, Pink Lloyd got shuffled back to last as Green Light Go tired, Rafael Hernandez taking the 9-year-old gelding between horses as they entered the stretch. Souper Stonehenge maintained an easy lead throughout, but Patrick Husbands saw that advantage shrinking as Pink Lloyd made his run down the center of the track.

Souper Stonehenge's lead was too much for four-time Vigil winner Pink Lloyd, though, as the Live Oak gelding was three-quarters of a length in front at the wire. The final time for the G3 Vigil was 1:09.52. Not So Quiet was third, with Cash Dividend, Embolden, and Green Light Go rounding out the order of finish.

Bred in Florida by owner Live Oak Plantation, Souper Stonehenge is a 5-year-old gelding by Speightstown out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare Onepointhreecarats. With his win in the G3 Vigil, Souper Stonehenge 2-1-1 in six starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of five wins in 16 starts and career earnings of $343,705.

Not So Quiet’s Vice Regent Win Boosts Casse’s Big Day At Woodbine

Heste Sport's homebred 5-year-old Not So Quiet thundered past the favored graded stakes winner City Boy down the stretch to take the $150,000 Vice Regent Stakes featured on the rainy Sunday afternoon program at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

The Vice Regent, which was contested over one mile on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course for its first 23 editions, moved to the inner turf this year and was run as a five-furlong sprint for Ontario-bred 3-year-olds and up.

Jockey Rafael Hernandez and trainer Mark Casse, one of the hottest combinations of the meet, teamed up for the win with the Silent Name–Mona Moon gelding, who returned $12.60 as the 5-1 fourth choice.

Alicia's Kid (Leo Salles) led briefly out of the gates from midfield, but insider Forester's Turn (Kazushi Kimura) dashed to the front with City Boy (David Moran) and those two battled head-to-head through an opening quarter-mile in :22.03. Meanwhile, Not So Quiet and Hernandez loomed the danger just to their outside in third.

City Boy eventually shook off Forester's Turn and drew clear down the stretch, but Not So Quiet tracked down the 5-2 favorite in the final stages to score by three-quarters of a length in :57.19 over firm turf. Nevaeh's Dream (Steve Bahen) closed with a fury from the backfield to edge out a determined Alicia's Kid for third prize in the 10-horse field.

Not So Quiet, who finished third in the Grade 3 Jacques Cartier Stakes and fourth in the Shepperton this summer, earned the first stakes victory of his career and has now won two of five starts since his return to racing this year under the tutelage of Casse. The win was his fifth from 11 starts lifetime.

The Vice Regent was part of Casse's second four-win day of the meet. Hernandez ended the 11-race card with a triple.

Following Sunday's stakes race, Woodbine Entertainment held a moment of silence on the turf course to honour longtime horsewoman Martha Gonzalez, who passed away that morning at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with cancer. Woodbine's jockeys also paid tribute to the longtime assistant trainer and wife of Nick Gonzalez bywearing a black band on their right leg during the running of the first race. On behalf of the entire horse racing community, Woodbine Entertainment sends heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Live Thoroughbred racing continues on Thursday, featuring the 1 5/8-mile third leg of the Woodbine Turf Endurance Series as race five. Theregoesjojo will attempt to add to his series leading point total of 17 with Kazushi Kimura back aboard for trainer Michael De Paulo and owner Samotowka Stables. The field also includes Artistico, who ranks a close second in the standings with 15 points, along with English Illusion (four points), English Classic (three points) and a trio of newcomers. Post time for the first race is set for 2:15 p.m.
