Sakheer Out Of Dewhurst

TDN Rising Star Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) will be forced to miss Saturday's G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket after trainer Roger Varian revealed that the G2 Mill Reef S. winner has scoped dirty. Having been supplemented for the seven-furlong feature on Monday, KHK Racing's emerging luminary will now wait until 2023 to test his Classic credentials. “This is of course very frustrating and disappointing and I am very sorry for owners KHK Racing and everyone connected with the horse,” Varian posted on Twitter on Thursday. “He will be put away now for the season and we look forward to him returning as a three-year-old.”

Sakheer's absence means that fellow TDN Rising Star Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}) takes on the mantle as favourite, with Sir Michael Stoute booking Richard Kingscote for the G3 Tattersalls S. winner. Ryan Moore, who partnered the Juddmonte homebred on his two previous starts, rides Ballydoyle's sole entry Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never), another TDN Rising Star who looks to add to his G2 Futurity S. and provide Aidan O'Brien with a record-equalling eighth renewal. Other than Nostrum, Juddmonte have a strong hand as the Andrew Balding-trained G2 Champagne S. and G3 Acomb S. winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) lines up with Frankie Dettori in the saddle, while Charlie Appleby relies on the unbeaten Listed Pat Eddery S. and Listed Ascendant S. scorer Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}).

Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Nostrum Dominates HQ Feature

Sir Michael Stoute had not won Newmarket's G3 Tattersalls S. since 1994, Annus Mirabilis (Fr) (Warning {GB}) doing the deed back when it was known as the Somerville Tattersall S., and the local elder bridged a 28-year gap after 'TDN Rising Star' Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination) asserted his superiority in taking fashion to frank the impression given on debut in July. Juddmonte's March-foaled bay had delivered a scintillating performance over seven furlongs at Sandown in that only prior outing and accepted a tow in second after a sharp getaway in this black-type bow. Sent forward to dispute the lead from halfway, the 7-4 second choice was shaken up in front passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing on the climb to the line to easily tame Listed Chesham S. winner and G2 Vintage S. second Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Godolphin's G2 Superlative S. runner-up and Listed Denford S. scorer Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was unable to land a telling bow from off the pace and finished three lengths further back in third. Rank outsider Abravaggio (Ire) (Caravaggio) made a bold attempt from the front and was outclassed, but not disgraced, once headed and finished 15 lengths adrift of third.

“I thought it was a very warm race, but he did it very nicely first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that,” said Stoute after notching an overall fourth winner of the race. “We expected a very big run, but for a horse racing for the first time like he was it is always difficult to fathom. It is so far so good and you could only be pleased. I don't know if we will see him again this season. We will take him home and chill him out and relax him and put him back in fast work. It is a difficult time of year, especially for 2-year-olds when the weather turns, so we don't know. I would like to give him one more run [this year].”

Holloway Boy's trainer Karl Burke was not downcast in defeat and commented, “We're delighted with that as he missed eight to 10 days with a dirty scope and missed the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster]. Danny Tudhope said he would be suited by a mile, so we could look at the [Oct. 22 G1] Vertem Futurity Trophy or, beyond that, the Breeders' Cup.”

Nostrum becomes the third black-type scorer produced by the dual stakes-winning G3 Select S. runner-up Mirror Lake (GB) (Dubai Destination), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Lanwades Stud S. victrix Hateya (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). Nostrum’s Mettle To Be Tested At HQ

Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire festival features 10 black-type heats, reaching the high plateau of Saturday's G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Middle Park S., and opens Thursday with the four-runner G3 Tattersalls S.–also known as the Somerville Tattersall S.–the highlight of day one. Sir Michael Stoute has not won this contest since 1994, when Annus Mirabilis (Fr) (Warning {GB}) joined the race's honour roll, and the veteran trainer relies on Juddmonte's homebred Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination), who has been rerouted from last week's cancelled Listed Flying Scotsman S., in his attempt to bridge a 28-year gap. The March-foaled bay powered to a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with a scintillating display over this seven-furlong trip at Sandown in July and makes his eagerly awaited return coming back off that three-length tally.

 

Hardened Foe On Show

Nostrum encounters just three opponents, but competition is fierce with the presence of a stakes-winning duo placed at Group 2 level, namely Karl Burke trainee Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) and Godolphin's Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Both won their June 18 debut, Holloway Boy in Royal Ascot's Listed Chesham S. and Victory Dance in a novices' heat at the town's July course, with the former subsequently posting a second in July's G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood. The latter has since followed up a G2 Superlative S. second with a win in the Listed Denford S. at Newbury. “Victory Dance is in good order and has experience and strong group-race form under his belt,” said Charlie Appleby, who seeks a third straight edition alongside William Buick in the wake of their triumphs with La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and recent GI Woodbine Mile hero Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). “We are looking forward to him returning to group company and feel he should be very competitive.”

 

Unlikely Upset

Paul Kwok and Angel Li's rank outsider Abravaggio (Ire) (Caravaggio), ninth on debut at Great Yarmouth last week, is a graduate of the WC Equine academy which once housed this term's Listed City Walls S. victrix and G3 Prix du Petit Couvert third Royal Aclaim (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}). However, he is unlikely to spring an upset for George Margarson's nearby yard.

 

Rockfel Tops Friday's Bill

While Thursday's additional stakes action consists of the two-mile Listed Rose Bowl S. and Listed Criterium de Lyon in France, Friday's programme includes a quintet of black-type contests at HQ, headed by the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Rockfel S. over seven furlongs. One dozen juvenile fillies have been declared with John and Thady Gosden trainee Commissioning (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who is out of a half-sister to G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger hero Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), set to depart from stall one as the likely favourite. The card also features the seven-furlong G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Joel S., with Hambleton Racing's in-form Tempus (GB) (Kingman ({GB}), successful in last month's G3 Sovereign S. and G3 Prix Quincey, allocated gate one in a field of seven.

Kingman Colt A New Rising Star At Sandown

Juddmonte's hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake (GB) (MSW & GSP-Eng, $113,061), by Dubai Destination) was let go at odds of 13-2 for Thursday's Martin Densham Memorial EBF Maiden S. at Sandown and came home with a 'TDN Rising Star' after producing a taking display in a contest won last year by subsequent G2 Queen's Vase second Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The homebred bay was bustled along from the gates to occupy a forward pitch in second after the initial strides of the seven-furlong test. Making eyecatching headway from the three-furlong pole, he powered to the front passing the quarter-mile marker and was pushed out inside the final furlong to easily defeat Golden Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by an impressive three lengths.

“He's a big horse and had been doing well at home,” said Ryan Moore. “I thought he might be a little raw and if he started slowly he might not get organised at all, but I was able to get him into a good position and get a lead. He was left in front a long way out, which I didn't want to be, and every time I asked him he kept lengthening. There's plenty of improvement in him and I'd say he's more of a 3-year-old than a 2-year-old. He'll have no problem going a mile and may get a little further. He's a nice colt.”
