Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Jump Start Tops 2020 Stallion Award Earners

Runners by Pennsylvania's stallions generated nearly $850,000 in stallion awards in 2020, and a familiar name found himself at the top of the sire list.

The late Jump Start was the Keystone State's leading resident by stallion award earnings, bringing in $172,796.02 for owner Northview Stallion Station Inc.

The owner of a Pennsylvania-based stallion at the time of a foal's conception is eligible for stallion awards generated by that foal. Stallion owners receive 10 percent of the purse earned when a registered Pennsylvania-bred and- sired runner finishes in the top three in any pari-mutuel race within the state.

Jump Start was Pennsylvania's leading sire by general earnings in 2020, with 155 runners and 71 winners making nearly $3.3 million.

He accounted for two of the top five earners of stallion awards, led by It's a Journey, who generated $10,310 in that category last year. The veteran campaigner had her best season yet in 2020, featuring victories in the Mrs. Penny Stakes and an optional claiming race at Parx Racing.

Jump Start also had Fire's Finale add $8,835 in stallion awards. The colt generated awards in two races during his juvenile season, breaking his maiden at Parx, then taking the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes.

Knicks Go Named 2020 Maryland-Bred Horse Of The Year

The fourth annual Renaissance Awards, a collaborative effort between the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Maryland Jockey Club, which recognizes excellence in Thoroughbred racing and breeding in Maryland in the past year, went virtual this year.

Throughout the week of Feb. 22, awards were presented through the MHBA's social media accounts to the top Maryland owner, trainer, jockey, breeder, broodmare and stallion, Backstretch Workers of the Year, one for Pimlico Race Course and one for Laurel Park, MTHA's Unsung Hero, as well as the champion Maryland-breds of 2020.

Record-breaking Grade 1 winner Knicks Go took home top honors as Maryland-bred Horse of the Year and champion older male.

Owned by Korea Racing Authority and trained by Brad H. Cox, Knicks Go capped off an impressive year by breaking the track record at Keeneland with his victory in the $1-million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, notching his second Grade 1 victory by 3 1/2 lengths as he stopped the clock in 1:33.85. He went into the Breeders' Cup after securing a 10 1/4-length victory in a 1 1/16 mile allowance at Keeneland, where he broke the track record in 1:40.79, which was preceded by an allowance victory at Oaklawn Park in February. A perfect three for three in 2020, the son of Paynter earned $608,440.

Knicks Go, bred by Angie Moore, was sold as a weanling for $40,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, and later purchased for $87,000 as a yearling by Korea Racing Authority at the 2017 Keeneland September sale. Only the fifth Maryland-bred to win a Breeders' Cup race, his share of the purse ($520,000) propelled him beyond the $1 million mark in career earnings.

Champion 2-year-old male: Jaxon Traveler (dk.b./br.c., 2018, by Munnings—Listen Boy, by After Market). Bred by Dr. and Mrs. A. Leonard Pineau; owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner; trained by Steven M. Asmussen.

Champion 2-year-old filly: Street Lute (ch. f., 2018, by Street Magician—Alottalute, by Midnight Lute). Bred by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman and Dr. Brooke Bowman; owned by Lucky 7 Stables; trained by John J. Robb.

Champion 3-year-old male: Field Pass (gr./ro.c, 2017, by Lemon Drop Kid—Only Me, by Runaway Groom). Bred by Mark Brown Grier; owned by Three Diamonds Farm; trained by Michael J. Maker.

Champion 3-year-old filly and champion turf runner: Sharing (ch.f., 2017, by Speightstown—Shared Account, by Pleasantly Perfect). Bred by Sagamore Farm; owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gainesway Stable (Antony Beck); trained by H. Graham Motion.

Champion older female: Never Enough Time (dk.b./br.m., 2016, by Munnings—What Time It Is, by Partner's Hero). Bred and owned by R. Larry Johnson; trained by Michael J. Trombetta.

Champion sprinter: Laki (ch.g., 2013, by Cuba—Truthful Dutch, by Swear by Dixie). Bred by Tom Michaels and Lorna Baker; owned by Hillside Equestrian Meadows; trained by Damon R. Dilodovico.

Also presented were the annual breeder, stallion and broodmare of the year awards. Angie Moore, breeder of 2020 Maryland-bred Horse of the Year and champion older male Knicks Go, was crowned the Maryland Breeder of the Year, while Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds LLC and Hillwood Stable LLC's Love's Reason, dam of 2019 Maryland-bred champion older female Majestic Reason, won Maryland Broodmare of the Year and Northview Stallion Station's Great Notion took home the title of Maryland Stallion of the Year for the fifth consecutive year.

Other award winners for 2020 include Robert Bone, Maryland Owner of the Year; Claudio Gonzalez, Maryland Trainer of the Year; Trevor McCarthy, Maryland Jockey of the Year. Edgar Gallegos was honored as the Pimlico Backstretch Worker of the Year, while Antonio Lopez Salazar earned the title of Laurel Backstretch Employee of the Year, and jockey Victor Carrasco was recognized as the MTHA's Unsung Hero.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented by Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Northview Gets A Jump Start In Stallion Awards

Pennsylvania boasts one of the country's most lucrative incentive programs, and two farms that have invested heavily in stallions reaped the biggest rewards during the first 11 months of the previous year.

Northview Stallion Station, which closed its Pennsylvania operation at the end of last year's breeding season, led its peers comfortably by combined breeder and stallion awards, with $272,745.60.

What made Northview's standing especially impressive was that its incentive earnings came exclusively through stallion awards. That was helped greatly by the late sire Jump Start, a perennial leader in the Keystone State, who once again finished atop the sire list by earnings a year after his death.

Among Jump Start's best runners of 2020 was the Pennsylvania-bred colt Fire's Finale, who capped off his season with a closing score in the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes at Parx Racing. He earned $108,315 on the racetrack during his juvenile season.

Glenn Brok of Diamond B Farm finished second by combined awards, earning $197,405.12. The majority of those incentives came from breeders' awards, but the Diamond B operation stands several of the state's top stallions.

The biggest contributor to Diamond B's stallion awards in 2020 was veteran Talent Search, whose runners were led by stakes-placed Final Shot. Diamond B also stands Uptowncharlybrown who has two seasons on offer in the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association's stallion season auction.

Grade 3 Winner Fly On Angel Tops Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Sale

The rough waters of the 2020 marketplace saw its final ship pass through on Tuesday, when the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age Sale posted across-the-board declines, led by the $195,000 purchase of Grade 3 winner Fly On Angel.

Tuesday's auction saw 182 horses change hands for revenues of $2,345,600, down 46 percent from last year's sale, when 249 horses sold for $4,383,700. The average sale price fell 27 percent to $12,888 from $17,605, and the median declined 38 percent to $5,000 from $8,000. The buyback rate finished at 23 percent, compared with 18 percent in 2019.

Cypress Creek LLC purchased Tuesday's sale-topper, Fly On Angel, a Palace Malice filly who achieved a career highlight earlier this year when she won the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks.

The 3-year-old has won four of 11 starts, earning $226,660 for owner Joseph Besecker and trainer Claudio Gonzalez.

As a 2-year-old, Fly On Angel won on debut at Parx Racing, then finished second in the Parx Juvenile Fillies Stakes two starts later. Her 3-year-old campaign featured an allowance optional claiming victory prior to her Charles Town Oaks score.

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall and Haymarket Farm, Fly On Angel is out of the stakes-placed Posse mare Runge, whose four foals to race are all winners. Multiple Grade 1 winner Videogenic is in her extended family.

Northview Stallion Station consigned Fly On Angel, as agent for Besecker.

The auction's most expensive weanling, and the second-most expensive overall offering of the day, was a New York-bred Laoban colt who sold to Machmer Hall for $150,000.

The bay colt is out of the placed Stonesider mare Dixie Gem, whose first foal to race is a placed runner. His page features Grade 2 winner Thunder Achiever and Grade 3 winners Pure Gossip and Street Game.

Vinery Sales consigned the colt, as agent.
