Galawi Retired To Northview Stallion Station In Maryland

Galawi, a winning son of the world's most successful international sire Dubawi out of a Group 1-winning millionaire half-sister to the incomparable Goldikova, will stand his first season at Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md., in 2022 for $2,000 live foal, payable when the foal stands and nurses.

A stakes-caliber runner who was retired early due to injury, 4-year-old Galawi, descends from generations of champions and Group 1 winners produced by the enormously successful stud and racing stable of Jacques Wertheimer, and in recent decades by his sons Alain and Gerard Wertheimer.

Sent to trainer Graham Motion earlier this year, Galawi impressed with his only U.S. start when accelerating from last to first in a mile and a quarter race over the Belmont turf course in June, getting the final quarter according to Trakus in :22.04.

“He was extremely impressive in the morning and had a real presence about him,” said Motion. “No doubt in my mind he was stakes caliber. He's just a very classy horse.”

Galawi, is out of Group 1 Prix Vermeille winner Galikova, a half-sister to seven stakes performers, led by Hall of Famer Goldikova. A champion in the U.S. twice and a champion in France four consecutive years, Goldikova won 14 Grade/Group 1 races, including three consecutive runnings of the Breeders' Cup Mile over males and four runnings of the G1 Prix Rothschild. Galikova's group-winning half-brother Anodin was second in the Breeders' Cup Mile and is a group stakes sire. The female line leads directly to Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Gold River.

“He's stunning looking and has a phenomenal pedigree,” said Motion. “I feel he has a stallion's pedigree. I just didn't anticipate him having to be a stallion so soon.”

Galawi, is one of three sons of Dubawi now at stud in the U.S. Dubawi has sired more than 225 stakes winners, and had a stellar 2021 Breeders' Cup as the sire of three winners – Yibir (Breeders' Cup Turf), Space Blues (Breeders' Cup Mile), and Modern Games (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf).

“Turf racing takes up so much of our day-to-day racing – it's a natural to breed to a horse like this,” noted Motion. “There are so many more opportunities than there used to be for horses on the grass – especially for 2 and 3-year-olds. To get close to Dubawi and close to Goldikova – it doesn't get much better than that.”

Wertheimer’s Galawi to Stand at Northview

Wertheimer and Frere's Galawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Galikova {Fr}, by Galileo {Ire}), a maiden winner in his only U.S. start who hails from the immediate family of champion Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), has been injured and retired to Northview Stallion Station near Chesapeake City, Md. He will stand in 2022 for $2,000, stands and nurses.

Galawi is out of G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille winner Galikova, the younger half-sister of multiple French, English, and U.S. champion Goldikova. In addition to her 11 Group 1 scores in France and England, Goldikova captured three consecutive editions of the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. A number of other members of the deep family are Group winners as well.

Like the majority of the family, Galawi was campaigned as a homebred for Wertheimer and Frere. He began his career in 2020 in France for the Carlos Laffon-Parias stable and notched two placings before shipping stateside to Graham Motion's barn. The 4-year-old debuted in the U.S. June 27 of this year with a 10-furlong, 1 1/2-length, last-to-first score on the Belmont turf.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: A New Generation Of Sires In The Keystone State

The top of the Pennsylvania sire standings hasn't changed much over the past few years.

Once the mighty Jump Start took over the top of the podium six years ago, he has yet to relinquish it, and his rival Weigelia has never been far behind. However, Jump Start's death in 2019 means his position at the head of the class will eventually open up and be claimed by one of Pennsylvania's younger sires.

The class of stallions poised to take over in the long-term, those with five crops of racing age or less, each have their own unique sets of circumstances, but in the meantime, they have been making their owners five-figure sums in Pennsylvania stallion awards.

When a registered Pennsylvania-bred and -sired runner finishes in the top three at Parx Racing, Penn National, or Presque Isle Downs, the owner of their sire receives a 10 percent bonus of the purse share, which can add up quickly for a stallion with an army of runners in the state.

The clear leader in the class with five crops of racing age or less is El Padrino, whose long-term potential was snuffed out in 2017 when he died following colic surgery.

El Padrino left behind four crops, all now at racing age, and those runners have earned the stallion's owner, Northview Stallion Station, $70,284 in bonus money so far in 2021.

The biggest contributor to that pot has been Prince of Rain, a 4-year-old gelding who has generated $11,459 in stallion awards this season, with top-three finishes in eight of his 10 starts.

After winning his debut start at Penn National on Feb. 24, Prince of Rain finished second in a trio of allowance races at Penn National and Parx, before getting back on the winning track in a Penn National allowance on May 28. He added another win two starts later in a July 28 allowance at Parx Racing.

Prince of Rain has since graduated to state-bred stakes company, highlighted by a third-place effort in the Banjo Picker Sprint Stakes at Parx on Aug. 23.

The gelding races as a homebred for the Z & Z Stables of trainer Michael Zalalas and breeder Angelo Zalalas.

With second-place Uncle Lino having moved to Maryland, the stallion with the greatest inside track to long-term success in the Pennsylvania standings among the younger stallions is arguably Godstone Farm's Well Spelled.

Well Spelled, a 12-year-old son of Spellbinder, has four crops of racing age that has made Godstone Farm $30,863 in stallion award earnings this season.

The leader among Well Spelled's stallion award earners is No More Martinis, a 4-year-old gelding who has brought in $5,155 in awards for that category. No More Martinis has won three of four starts this year, all at Penn National.

Engage Retired to Northview Stallion Station

Multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter Engage (Into Mischief–Nefertiti, by Speightstown) has been retired to Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md., for the 2022 season.

The bay won graded stakes at two and four, including Keeneland's GII Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix S., a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” event for the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint while defeating a field that included eventual Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect). He also captured the GIII Futurity S. as a juvenile and added two more listed stakes wins, retiring with $802,780 in earnings.

“This horse is pure speed,” said Northview general manager David Wade. “He is the first true sprinter we've retired to Northview in years.”

Engage will stand for $5,000 live foal and is now at the farm and available for inspection. He will be showcased with the rest of the Northview stallion lineup at an Open House Dec. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
