Bandbox Yearling Named MHBA Champion

A Hillwood Stable homebred son of Bandbox was named grand champion of the 88th Maryland Horse Breeders' Association's Yearling Show, which was held at the Timonium Fairgrounds Sunday. The gray or roan colt is the third foal out of the Scrimshaw mare Dearie Be Good to win a class at the show–the colt's full-sister was reserve champion in 2018 and his half-sister by Great Notion was reserve champion in 2021. All are homebreds for Ellen Charles's Hillwood Stable, which also campaigned 2014 GIII General George H. winner Bandbox.

Bandbox, who stood his entire career at Northview Stallion Station before his death last year, also took home the Northview Stallion Station Challenge Trophy as the show's leading sire for the third time, thus retiring the trophy.

“It's special for Mrs. Charles to have a son of Bandbox win,” said JoAnn Hayden of Dark Hollow Farm, where the colt was born and raised. “We've loved this colt since birth. This one is big, robust, and looks very mature.”

Jonathan Thomas, who judged 59 yearlings at this year's show, concurred with Hayden's assessment.

“He was the best of a very good group. When you have to pick five finalists per class, you end up leaving out a bunch of good ones every time,” said Thomas. “Everyone looked very well-raised and prepared, but he had the best balance and substance.”

All yearlings who were judged are now eligible for the $40,000 premium award which is split annually, with $20,000 going to the exhibitors of the four show contestants who earn the most money as 2-year-olds during 2023, and another $20,000 divided among the exhibitors of the four highest-earning 3-year-old runners the next year

Northview Stallion Station Joins As Partner With Aftercare Organization Beyond The Wire

Northview Stallion Station, located in Chesapeake City, Md., has partnered with Beyond The Wire to provide financial assistance for “sanctuary” horses—retired Thoroughbred racehorses that cannot move on to second careers. It is a major step forward for Maryland's Thoroughbred aftercare program.

Beyond the Wire is an industry-wide initiative between the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, the Maryland Jockey Club, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland jockeys designed to facilitate safe and enriching placements for retired Maryland-based racehorses.

Northview, which stands nine stallions including Great Notion, the current leading stallion in Maryland, was launched in 1989 by the late Richard Golden, Dr. Tom Bowman, and the late Allaire DuPont. For the past few years, Golden's son, Michael, has overseen operations at the farm. David Wade, general manager of Northview, said Michael Golden has had a passion for retired racehorses and was looking for mechanism to generate financial support for them.

“Sanctuary horses need funding,” Wade said. “Some of them spend the rest of their lives at a farm because they're not adoptable. Northview wants to help fund that effort, and we'd like to challenge other stallion farms to do the same.”

Wade said Northview will donate 5 percent of the stud fees it collects from contracts. It can do so from stallions wholly owned by Northview or from the shares it owns in other stallions that stand at the farm.

“This program is such a critical part of the progressive efforts of the Maryland racing industry to support all of our retiring horses, whether they can have a second career as a riding horse or not,” said Laurie Calhoun, who operates the Union Bridge, Md.-based Foxie G Foundation, a Thoroughbred Aftercare Association-accredited facility that works closely with the Beyond The Wire program. “It concentrates heavily on horses with past racing injuries that need extensive rehabilitation. Given enough time and careful management, the majority of these horses can live a comfortable life in our sanctuary program if they are not adopted out as companions or used in ground-based, equine-assisted therapy programs.

“Since 2018, Foxie G has had five horses in an equine assisted therapy program at the Baltimore Agricultural Center, serving veterans and first responders. We will also begin a new equine-assisted therapy partnership in 2022, where up to 10 of our sanctuary horses will be used. Horses are natural healers and they can give back so much to our community. Northview's generous, lead gift in support of these horses will literally be life-changing for horses that have not had many options in the past thanks to the caring efforts of Michael Golden and David Wade.”

Beverly Strauss of MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, another TAA-accredited farm that partners with Beyond The Wire, agreed with Calhoun.

“Maryland racing does a good job filtering horses off the track and into TAA-accredited facilities, but the number of horses needing sanctuary care that are not rideable is significant,” Strauss said. “It puts a strain on each (partner) organization. These horses need ongoing support from the racing and breeding industry—we owe this much to them.”

Safalow’s Mission Tops Fasig December Sale

A maiden juvenile colt named Safalow's Mission (Mission Impazible) (Hip 267) topped the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age Sale Tuesday, bringing $130,000 from trainer Linda Rice, acting on behalf of Thelma and Louise Stable.

“He was purchased for a new client, Thelma & Louise Stable,” Rice said. “He is a very attractive horse. He is a half-brother to a filly that I trained, My Roxy Girl (Emcee), who has earned over $600,000 on the NYRA circuit. He ran well in both of his previous starts and should be a lot of fun for the new owners. As a maiden, he has all of his conditions, plus he is a New York-bred, which is a big bonus for us.”

As for the price, the veteran New York conditioner said, “I thought it was a fair price for the quality of this horse and the options available to him with the New York-bred and New York-sired races.”

Bred in New York by Becky Thomas' Sequel Thoroughbreds and Bill Barone's Sunny Crest Farm, Safalow's Mission was purchased by Dean and Patti Reeves' Reeves Thoroughbred Racing for $9,500 at the 2019 FTNMIX sale and was re-offered at this year's EASMAY sale, summoning $25,000 from Joseph Besecker after breezing in :10 2/5. The dark bay finished second on debut for George Weaver in a race restricted by auction price at Belmont Oct. 21 and was third next out in a state-bred event at Aqueduct Nov. 19.

When asked about the future plans for her stable's newest addition, Rice said, “We will point him towards the New York Stallions Series, likely starting with The Great White Way S. on Dec. 18 at Aqueduct.”

The New York Stallion Series is a very lucrative set of stakes races, making this gelding a very appealing prospect to many New York conditioners, including Weaver and Carlos Martin, who were two of the underbidders. The aforementioned The Great White Way S. offers a purse of $500,000. Rice won that stake with a maiden before when taking the 2018 renewal with Blindwillie McTell (Posse).

This is the third straight year that a member of Besecker's reduction of racing stock, which is handled by Northview Stallion Station's David Wade, has topped this auction. Laddie Liam (Golden Lad) led the 2019 renewal at $450,000 and Fly On Angel (Palace Malice) topped last year's auction at $195,000.

Besecker was represented by 86 horses Tuesday, with 60 selling for $1,224,700 and an average of $14,750.

The catalogue increased dramatically this year with 401 horses entered in the sale compared to 287 in the COVID-impacted 2020. In comparison, the 2019 Fasig December Sale catalogue was comprised of 367 Thoroughbreds. A total of 260 horses changed hands in Timonium Tuesday for a gross of $3,880,100 with an average of $14,923 and median of $10,000. There were 71 horses who failed to meet their reserves.

At last term's renewal of this auction, 182 horses brought $2,345,600 with an average of $12,888 and median of $5,000. There were 55 RNAs.
