Sodashi Scores Unique Win in Hanshin Juvenile Fillies

White wonder Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) became the first of her colour to score at the highest level in Japan with a narrow win in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies on Sunday. Deep Impact (Jpn)’s Satono Reinas (Jpn) was only a nose behind in third with Uberleben (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn}) a neck back in third.

The crowd’s pick at 2-1, the undefeated filly balked a bit prior to entering the stalls, but soon settled in fifth as Yoka Yoka (Jpn) (Squirtle Squirt) cut out moderate fractions of :23.20 and :46.80, with the first 1000 metres in :58.70. Sodashi was poised to make her bid and edged closer to the head of affairs on the far turn. She had to wait for a gap, but soon bulled her way through in upper stretch. Satono Reinas rallied up on her inside with less than 50 metres remaining, but Sodashi won the bob and defended her perfect record. Uberleben made a late run on the winner’s outside, but was also thwarted. Fellow late runner Meikei Yell (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}) let down at the end as well, which was good for fourth, another half-length back. Yoka Yoka was a staying on fifth.

“Going into the race as favourite was a bit of a load, but I’m thrilled with the outcome,” said pilot Hayato Yoshida. “She hated to even go near the gate but I’m relieved that all went well and that we were able to be positioned just as I hoped. The going affected her good turn of foot but she gave all she had. There is room for improvement, and I hope we can get her ready for next year’s Classics.”

Sodashi first surfaced with a win in an 1800-metre juvenile newcomer race at Hakodate in July, and she progressed to land the G3 Sapporo Nisai S. in a snappy 1:48.2, a new record, on Sept. 5. In her latest effort prior to Sunday’s contest, the white filly blitzed a mile in the G3 Artemis S., covering the 1600 metres in 1:34.90.

Pedigree Notes
The sixth Group 1 winner for her former Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old sire, Sodashi was already the 18th group winner and 35th black-type winner. The four-time winner Buchiko, herself a half-sister to Japanese MSW Yukichan (Jpn) (Kurofune), was a fan favourite during her racing days partially due to her uniquely marked coat, and Sodashi is her first foal. She has a yearling full-sister to Sunday’s Hanshin Juvenile Fillies heroine and a weanling by leading Japanese freshman sire Maurice (Jpn). Yukichan is the granddam of MGSW Meikei Yell (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}), while fourth dam Storm and Sunshine (Star de Naskra) won the GII Test S. and was a half-sister to GSW Smile Again (Wild Again), SW & MGSP Halo Sunshine (Halo), and SW & MGSP Montecito (Seeking the Gold).

Gran Alegria Imperious in Mile Championship

Although she left it until late, Gran Alegria (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) displayed a scintillating turn of foot once she found running room to rush by her rivals and claim the G1 Mile Championship at Hanshin on Sunday. It was the fourth Group 1 win for the daughter of Breeders’ Cup heroine Tapitsfly and she is the eighth horse-after the runner-up Indy Champ (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn})–to claim both mile events in Japan having earlier scored in the G1 Yasuda Kinen.

The first filly or mare to claim the Mile Championship since Blumenblatt (Jpn) (Admire Vega {Jpn}) in 2008 and the third horse to double up in the G1 Sprinters S./Mile Championship following Durandal (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) in 2003, the 3-5 chalk settled in between horses in fifth as Resistencia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) set the pace, covering the first quarter in :23.50 while shadowed by Lauda Sion (Jpn) (Real Impact {Jpn}).

Unhurried with 600 metres to travel, the bay was poised to pounce, but Gran Alegria’s rally was stymied, as a gap closed in front of her inside the final quarter mile. Christophe Lemaire prepared to send his charge through another hole, but her path forward was once again blocked, this time by the strong-closing Indy Champ who surged up to lead inside the final 100 metres. Undeterred, Lemaire steered his charge to the outside of Indy Champ and she burst past last year’s winner in a matter of strides to win by a deceptive three-quarter lengths as much the best. Admire Mars (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), who had stalked the pace throughout, hung on for third a neck in front of Scarlet Color (Jpn) (Victoire Pisa {Jpn}).

“She had a good break so we were able to sit in a good position,” said Lemaire. “She’s matured and a lot easier to ride now being a 4-year-old so she was relaxed and we had a good trip until the last turn where, as a favorite you’re marked and it so happens, but we weren’t able to make our move to the outside smoothly for the stretch run. I was a little worried but the way she exploded into gear in the last 150 meters, it just shows how powerful she is and I’m looking forward to a great season from her as a 5-year-old.”

A winner of the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup and third in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. in December of 2018, Gran Alegria captured the 2019 G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas first up that April and added the G2 Hanshin Cup two starts later last December. Promoted to second in the 1200-metre G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen resuming this March, the 4-year-old saluted in the one-mile G1 Yasuda Kinen on June 7 and added the Oct. 4 G1 Sprinters S. cutting back to 1200 metres.

Pedigree Notes

One of 47 Group 1 winners for her late supersire, Gran Alegria also has the second highest tally of top-level victories of Deep Impact progeny with four. Only Gentildonna (Jpn), with seven, was more successful. The 4-year-old filly is also the fourth Mile Championship scorer for Deep Impact following Danon Shark (Jpn), Tosen Ra (Jpn) and Mikki Isle (Jpn). To date, the former Shadai Stallion Station supremo has sired 165 black-type winners 132 of them at the group level. In addition to Gran Alegria, he is also responsible for Japanese listed winner and group-placed Arusha (Jpn), who is also out of a Tapit mare.

A winner of the then-Listed Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2009, the late Tapitsfly progressed to take the GI Just a Game S. and GI First lady S. as a 5-year-old. Knocked down to Katsumi Yoshida for $1.85 million at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Tapitsfly’s first foal is Gran Alegria after a barren year in 2015. She also has a 3-year-old full-brother to the Mile Championship winner named Blutgang (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who sports a victory in one start.

Tapit’s daughters have produced four Grade/Group 1 winners so far among 40 black-type winners, and the Gainesway sire was in the spotlight earlier this weekend with Finite (Munnings)’s win in the GIII Chilukki S. at Churchill Downs.

Full Brother To Yoshida Leads JRHA Foal Sale

While Monday’s yearling session of the JRHA Select Sale in Hokkaido, Japan, was all about the progeny of Deep Impact (Jpn), the late great champion sire had no produce in Tuesday’s foal session-his final crop containing only around 20 foals-and thus it was another son of Sunday Silence, Deep Impact’s former Shadai studmate Heart’s Cry (Jpn), who dominated proceedings during Tuesday’s foal sale. Heart’s Cry was responsible for the three highest-priced lots, all sold by Northern Farm and out of American mares.

Last year’s foal sale had set records for aggregate (¥9.78-billion/£72-million/€80.2-million/$89.8-million) and average (¥50.4-million/£371,286/€413,262/$462,765) and so the fact that Tuesday’s figures were slightly off from those numbers during the first foal sale for many years without Deep Impact’s presence is no disgrace. At the close of trade 203 foals had changed hands from 226 offered for a clearance rate of 89.9% that matched last year’s figure. The aggregate of ¥8,334-billion (£61,994,126/€68,162,184/$77,708,299) was off by 14.8%, while the average of ¥41,054,187 (£305,607/€335,946/$382,799) was down 18.6%. The median proved more stable, dipping by just 3.3% to ¥29-million (£215,876/€237,282/$270,336).

Teruya Yoshida, owner of Shadai Farm and chairman of the JRHA, recognized the challenging climate globally and the absence of Deep Impact.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to the owners and trainers for attending the sale during such a challenging period and for supporting the market,” Yoshida said. “The market was slightly down today and I think the key factor is the absence of Deep Impact. When Northern Dancer died, the top end of the bloodstock market in America declined, and same thing happened here today.

“On the other hand, I believe the quality of mares we have in Japan is world-class and the quality of horses bred in Japan is world-class as well. I think the buyers were confident [enough] to make big investments in the horses we offered.”

Passion Prevalent Again

Taking top billing at the foal sale was the full-brother to Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}), who will himself have the opportunity to reinvigorate the Sunday Silence line in the U.S. having just completed his first season at stud at WinStar Farm in Kentucky. Yoshida, who proved extremely versatile on the racecourse while winning Grade Is on both dirt and turf, was himself a graduate of this sale, having been bought by WinStar for ¥94-million (£699,266/€768,826/$876,375) from the yearling session in 2015. Tuesday’s colt (lot 365) is just the second progeny of the dam Hilda’s Passion (Canadian Frontier) to visit the ring, and he was bought by Yoshihisa Ozasa for ¥380-million (£2,827,376/€3,108,491/$3,542,793).

Ozasa did not attend the sale but said in a statement through Racing Manager Morito Kajihara, “I think this is the outstanding individual in today’s catalogue. I was bidding in earnest and am very happy to buy such a fantastic young horse. I hope he grows up well and will be in the field of major races in future.”

Yoshida is not the only luminary on the page; Hilda’s Passion herself won the seven furlong GI Ballerina S. at Saratoga and was bought by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.225-million from Fasig-Tipton November in 2011. Tuesday’s colt is her eighth foal, and in addition to Yoshida she is also responsible for the G3 Shinzan Kinen victress Sanctuaire (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

The Yoshida brothers have made a regular habit of plundering the auction rings at America’s breeding stock sales for some of the best-credentialed mares, and that strategy certainly paid dividends on Tuesday. The year before he had swooped for Hilda’s Passion, Katsumi Yoshida took home the champion 2-year-old filly She’s A Tiger (Tale of the Cat) from Fasig-Tipton for $2.5-million. The GI Del Mar Debutante winner-who crossed the wire a nose ahead of another Katsumi Yoshida recruit, Ria Antonia (Rockport Harbor) in the 2013 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies before being demoted to second for interference-has already produced the winning 4-year-old Tigrasha (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), while her 3-year-old filly by Daiwa Major (Jpn) and 2-year-old daughter of Deep Impact are as-yet unraced. She’s A Tiger’s latest produce, a Heart’s Cry colt (lot 407), was her first progeny to visit a sale ring and the bay was bought by Masahiro Noda of Danox Co. Ltd for ¥270-million (£2,008,925/€2,208,536/$2,517,987).

“As there are no Deep Impacts on the market anymore, we decided we would like to buy a very nice foal by Heart’s Cry,” said Yoshiki Okada, racing manager to Masahiro Noda. “Our team inspected the consignment from Northern Farm and made a short list of foals by Heart’s Cry. He was on the short list and Mr. Noda selected this one from the list. The mare She’s A Tiger, who was the U.S. champion juvenile filly, is very good-looking horse and the foal is also good looking. The price was more than we expected but Mr. Noda did not want to stop bidding.”

A Deep Impact half-brother to GI Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) was the star turn of Monday’s yearling session, setting a record price for a JRHA yearling of ¥510-million (£3,794,400/€4,171,800/$4,756,197). The dam Sheave (Mineshaft)’s colt foal by Heart’s Cry (lot 383) was in the spotlight on Tuesday as the third-highest priced foal when bought by Miwa Holding for ¥210-million (£1,562,400/€1,717,766/$1,958,361). Sheave was a private acquisition by Northern Farm.

Kanaloa Colt An Early Highlight

The first $1-million-plus foal of the sale came early in the session when a Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) colt (lot 316) out of the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio and G2 Oaks d’Italia scorer Final Score (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) fetched ¥200-million (£1,488,061/€1,636,565/$1,865,106) from Ryouichi Ootuka. While many bidders battled it out for remaining heirs to the Sunday Silence line, Ootuka-who won last year’s G1 Kikuka Sho with World Premiere (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})-said he was taking a different approach.

“This is the pick of the day for me,” Ryoichi Ootuka said. “He is from a very successful female line, which is full of black-type, and it caught my fancy that he is Sunday Silence free, which would be a big advantage when he becomes stallion. While the price is more than I thought, I did not want to miss him.”

Final Score’s first two foals are both black-type placed. She is herself out of the listed-winning Holy Moon (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}), who produced three consecutive Oaks d’Italia winners in Cherry Collect (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), Charity Line (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}) and Final Score-the latter two also won the Lydia Tesio-and the Italian Group 3 winner Wordless (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) before throwing her best produce of all, the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks winner Sea Of Class (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

Lord Kanaloa, who has indeed proven an exciting outcross, provided another highlight lot in 539, a colt out of G1 VRC Oaks winner Kirramossa (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}) bought by Tetsuhide Kunimoto for ¥140-million (£1,041,642/€1,145,777/$1,305,781). A colt out of GI Santa Anita Oaks winner Crisp (El Corredor) (lot 445) brought ¥80-million (£595,360/€654,560/$746,160) from G. Riviere Racing.

Sister To Champion Shines

Dual Horse of the Year Kitasan Black (Jpn)-by Deep Impact’s full-brother Black Tide (Jpn)–had first-crop yearlings selling on Monday but it was on Tuesday that he shone brightest with two foals cracking the top 10. First up was a half-brother to last year’s champion 2-year-old filly Resistencia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) (lot 334) bought by Azabu Shoji for ¥190-million (£1,413,980/€1,554,580/$1,771,966), and he was followed by a colt out of G1 July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 484) picked up by INZEL Co Ltd for ¥110-million (£818,620/€899,896/$1,025,875).

The foal sale featured a filly from the first crop of American Triple Crown winner Justify (lot 397), and she went the way of Takeshita Koichi for ¥80-million (£595,360/€654,490/$746,049). The chestnut is out of Not Now Carolyn (Tapit), a daughter of Maryfield (Elusive Quality) who, like Hilda’s Passion, won the Ballerina S. and has produced the G2 Futurity S. second in Ireland, Radio Silence (War Front). A filly from the first crop of Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (lot 323) brought ¥41-million (£304,978/€335,421/$382,350) from Miyazaki Toshiya.

Familiar Names Front and Center at JRHA Select Yearling Sale

As reported in more detail by European Editor Emma Berry in Tuesday’s TDN European Edition, members of the final crop of the late Deep Impact (Jpn) predictably dominated the yearling section of the JRHA Select Sale Monday on the island of Hokkaido, accounting for the day’s top six sellers and eight of the top nine. Lot 114, the second Japanese foal from Sheave (Mineshaft)–the dam of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss)–led the way on a record final bid of ¥510 million ($4,766,356), as the offspring of American-bred and -raced mares acquired by the Yoshida family lit up the board one after the next.

Sheave, an unraced daughter of GSW & GISP Belterra (Unbridled), was bred by the late Bob Manfuso and was carrying a full-sister to Cathryn Sophia when she was acquired privately and exported to Japan. In February 2017, she produced Sharie al Malika (Jpn), who was a close second on debut in a Nakayama dirt maiden this past March. Sheave is the dam of the 2-year-old colt Satono Sky Turf (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and her colt foal by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) sells Tuesday as lot 383.

The session’s second-dearest offering at ¥400 million ($3,738,318) was lot 56, a colt out of Forever Darling (Congrats), who won the 2016 GII Santa Ynez S. for owner/trainer Richard Baltas and partners before continuing her career in the colors of Katsumi Yoshida. Forever Darling is a daughter of MSW & MGISP Darling My Darling (Deputy Minister), whose half-brother Zenno Rob Roy (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) won the 2004 G1 Japan Cup en route to Horse of the Year honors. Forever Darling’s first produce, Mon Favori (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}), won a newcomers’ event on turf over 1200 meters June 20 at Hakodate, scoring by five lengths in 1:08.7 (see below, gate 9). Daughters of Congrats have produced eight winners from nine starters in Japan, including Group 2 winner Hartley (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

During her racing career, Teddy’s Promise (Salt Lake) registered her biggest victory in the 2011 GI La Brea S. and her Deep Impact foal of 2019 (lot 36) was the session’s most expensive filly on a bid of ¥240 million ($2,242,991). Teddy’s Promise is the dam of two winners from as many to race in Japan, most prominently My Rhapsody (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}), victorious in Group 3 company last year and ninth, but not beaten far, behind Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact) in this year’s G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby). Teddy’s Promise’s current 2-year-old, a filly by 2015 Derby hero Duramente (Jpn), fetched ¥52 million last year.

In other results of note, lot 108, a Deep Impact son of GI American Oaks winner Cambina (Ire) (Hawk Wing) and kin to two group-placed runners, hammered at ¥200 million ($1,869,159); lot 92, a Deep Impact half-brother to Classic winner and Three Chimneys stallion Palace Malice (Curlin) made ¥190 million ($1,775,701); lot 23, a colt by Duramente out of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell (Proud Citizen), sold early in the session for ¥160 million ($1,495,328); a Deep Impact daughter of GI Beverly D. S. winner Euro Charline (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) realized ¥145 million ($1,335,141) as lot 171; and lot 106, a Screen Hero (Jpn) half-brother to recent Listed Japan Dirt Derby winner Danon Pharaoh (Jpn) (American Pharoah) fetched ¥96 million ($897,197).
