Breeders’ Cup Extends Late Nomination Deadline For 2020 Foals To Feb. 28

In advance of the major Thoroughbred auctions scheduled in January and February of next year, the Breeders' Cup today announced that it has extended the late nomination deadline for all 2020 North American foals to Feb. 28, 2021.

This late foal nomination will be the last opportunity for horsemen to nominate weanlings of 2020 to the Breeders' Cup program at a fee of $1,500 USD.

The $1,500 nomination entitles each foal with lifetime racing eligibility to the Breeders' Cup World Championships and the Breeders' Cup racing programs. All foals sired by a fully-nominated North American Breeders' Cup stallion are eligible for nomination to the Breeders' Cup program in their year of birth and now up to Feb. 28 of their yearling year.

“We want to provide buyers and sellers the Breeders' Cup Advantage for yearlings, either sold or purchased in January and February, to become fully-nominated individuals to the Breeders' Cup program,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer.

Nomination fees for 2020 foals not nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by Feb. 28 will be increased to $12,000 USD for an individual sired by a Breeders' Cup-nominated stallion and to $18,000 USD for an individual sired by a non-nominated stallion before July 15 through the racehorse nomination program.

Breeders' Cup Limited has been Thoroughbred racing's most significant national and international program for over 37 years. During this time, the organization has allocated purses and awards in excess of $860 million to owners, foal nominators and stallion nominators through the programs of the Breeders' Cup including the annual $31 million Breeders' Cup World Championships.

In addition to the racing benefits, in 2021, Breeders' Cup foal nominators are also eligible for special bonuses. Foal nominators will receive $10,000 USD for every victory in a Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” race. Moreover, foal nominator awards are available on every Breeders' Cup World Championships race for every starter. The individual nominating the foal receives these nominator awards even though the horse may change hands throughout its racing career.

Ohio State Faculty Clinician Chosen As AAEP’s First My Vet Rocks Honoree

Jonathan Yardley, DVM, associate professor-clinical in Equine Community Practice at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been selected as the June honoree of the American Association of Equine Practitioners' (AAEP) My Vet Rocks Contest, which celebrates the important relationship between veterinarian, owner and horse.

Dr. Yardley was among 75 veterinarians nominated by horse owners for the award during June. Also honored for their exemplary care were runners-up Dr. Kate Hodson, owner of Hodson Veterinary Services LLC in Hebron, Ind., and Dr. Bob Meyer, co-owner of Neuse River Equine Hospital in Wendell, N.C.

Patience, stall-side manner and commitment to client education were common themes among the 17 nomination letters received in support of Dr. Yardley. According to nominator Mindy Ridgeway, “Not only is he a compassionate and talented veterinarian, he is also a brilliant educator. … As an owner, it is such a valuable learning experience and he never misses an opportunity to educate as he rounds in the hospital and in the field. He is realistic, yet optimistic as he helps me achieve optimal health and long-term soundness for my horse.”

Aubrey Burwell added, “His teaching skills are just as great as his veterinary knowledge. His communication is top notch and … he keeps in mind owners' financial ability without compromising patient care.”

Dr. Yardley manages the university's general equine veterinary practice, where he provides a broad range of clinical care while also educating fourth-year veterinary students and interns.

“Sometimes, veterinary medicine can be a thankless job but it's a great feeling to know that what you're doing for clients and their animals is being received positively,” said Dr. Yardley, who received his veterinary degree in 2006 from Tufts University. “It gives me motivation to keep doing what I'm doing and to continue to practice the way I'm practicing. It's pretty cool.”

Dr. Yardley received a prize package from the AAEP and contest sponsor American Regent Animal Health, manufacturer of Adequan® i.m. (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan). In addition, he is now eligible to win the contest's grand prize, which will be announced later this year in conjunction with the AAEP's 66th Annual Convention. The grand-prize winner will be selected from each month's winning entries.

The AAEP continues to encourage horse owners to submit a My Vet Rocks nomination on behalf of an AAEP-member veterinarian who is exceptional in his or her care of the horse. Nominations can be submitted through Aug. 31 here.

Breeders’ Cup Extends Racing Age Nomination Discount Deadline To Aug. 15

Due to changes in racetrack schedules and auction sales dates as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the Breeders' Cup announced Monday that it is extending the discount deadline for horses of racing age to Saturday, Aug. 15.

All horses must be Breeders' Cup-nominated in order to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course Lexington, Ky., Nov. 6-7.

The original horses of racing age nomination discount deadline was July 15.

“Although most Breeders' Cup nominated horses join the program as weanlings, there are a few each year that didn't get the Breeders' Cup advantage as a foal,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “We created the horses of racing age nomination program to make sure all runners have a chance to compete in our racing programs including the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Now that racing has resumed in most locations, we believe our one-month extension will allow horsemen to better evaluate their racing stock and nominate to the Breeders' Cup program, providing eligibility for their entire racing career.”

The nomination discounts are as follows:

  • 2-year-olds by a nominated Breeders' Cup stallion can join the program for US$12,000. This one-time nomination fee makes the racehorse Breeders' Cup-eligible for its entire racing career.
  • Runners which are 3-year-olds and older that were foaled in the Northern Hemisphere and sired by a nominated stallion will receive a 50% discount off normal racehorse nomination fees. Three-year-olds and older which were born in the Southern Hemisphere can be nominated for 25% of their regular nomination fee.
  • All nominated racehorses are eligible for the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will have purses and awards totaling more than $35 million this year, and for any other Breeders' Cup racing program for their entire racing careers.

Following the Aug. 15 deadline, the price for all non-nominated runners reverts back to the standard racehorse nomination fee of US$100,000 or more until Oct. 26, when all runners must be pre-entered for the Breeders' Cup World Championships races.

Owners may nominate their horses of racing age online at https://members.breederscup.com/Nomination/RacehorseNominationTerms1 or by calling the Breeders' Cup Racing department at 859-514-9422.

Owners of horses of racing age by non-nominated stallions also can take advantage of discounted prices before Aug. 15.
