Crazy Beautiful Finds Kentucky Oaks Redemption In Summertime Oaks At Santa Anita

Kentucky-based Crazy Beautiful made amends for a disappointing effort in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks as she rallied three-wide turning for home en route to a 1 ¾-length win in Sunday's G2, $200,000 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. Trained by Ken McPeek, ridden by Mike Smith and saddled today by locally based trainer Karen Headley, Crazy Beautiful got 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.85.

Last after the first half mile, about three lengths off speedy Lady Aces, Smith saved ground at the rail around the far turn and allowed his filly to idle a bit as longshot Plum Sexy, to his immediate outside, began to tire. Approaching the quarter pole, Smith then angled out to tackle both Lady Aces and heavily favored Soothsay, who was all-out at that point to make the lead while Crazy Beautiful didn't gain the advantage until deep stretch.

“She broke really well, I noticed in the Kentucky Oaks (on April 30), she got slammed leaving there, never really giving her the chance to run,” said Smith, who was aboard Crazy Beautiful for the first time today. “So, I knew (with) a better break and the way she's bred with Liam's Map (and an) Indian Charlie mare, she has some speed if you needed it.

“For a minute there I thought about going to the lead, but they went up there and entertained themselves enough to where I felt confident (about taking off the early pace). With a short field, I was hoping Plum Sexy would drop back and I'd get out when it was time.”

A winner of the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks two starts back on March 27, but 10th, beaten 10 ½ lengths in the G1 Kentucky Oaks April 30, Crazy Beautiful was the second choice in a field of four sophomore fillies at 6-5 and paid $4.60 and $2.10 with no show wagering.

A Kentucky-bred filly by Liam's Map out of the Indian Charlie mare Indian Burn, Crazy Beautiful is owned by Phoenix Thoroughbred III. In notching her second graded stakes win, she improved her overall mark to 9-4-3-0 and with the winner's share of $120,000, increased her earnings to $520,865.

“She didn't get here to my barn until eight or nine Thursday night, so we just walked her Friday morning,” said Headley. “Mike came out and galloped her Saturday, so I really didn't do much with her at all.”

A winner of her first two starts including the G2 Santa Anita Oaks on April 3, Soothsay sat second, just off of Lady Aces to the top of the lane and then was all-out to finally overhaul her with a sixteenth of a mile to run, at which point the winner blew by both of them.

Trained by Richard Mandella and ridden by Flavien Prat, Soothsay was off at 4-5 and paid $2.10 to win while finishing 1 ¾ lengths in front of a gallant Lady Aces and Umberto Rispoli.

Fractions on the race were 23.66, 48.36, 1:12.84 and 1:37.42.

Improving Award Winner Posts Charles Whittingham Upset; United Last As Favorite

With heavily favored United in deep water turning for home, Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Charles Whittingham Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., boiled down to a pair of longshots – front-running Acclimate and up-and-coming Award Winner.

With Juan Hernandez at the controls, it was the John and Jerry Amerman homebred Award Winner who gradually overhauled the pacesetter and registered the huge head upset. Trained by David Hofmans, Award Winner got a mile and a quarter over Santa Anita's Camino Real Turf Course in 1:59.27.

Breaking from the rail in a field of four with a hillside start, jockey Ricky Gonzalez sent Acclimate to the lead out of the gate and was running strongly throughout, with a restrained Award Winner about three lengths off the lead heading into the far turn. With United laboring in third position, Award Winner set his sights on Acclimate and he gradually gained the advantage late.

“This was a really big win for us,” said Hernandez. “I knew that horse (Acclimate) had a lot of speed, so I let him go and my horse relaxed. I waited until the quarter pole and asked him one time and he really picked it up and made a huge move in the stretch. I was worried about the other horses, but they never touched us.”

A second condition allowance winner at a mile and one quarter on turf March 27, Award Winner, a 5-year-old gelding by Ghostzapper out of the Theatrical mare Devine Actress, was off at 6-1 and paid $15.40 and $7.80 with no show wagering.

Based in the Midwest through last summer, Award Winner made his first start for Hofmans on Jan. 8, a second place finish in a one mile turf allowance. With two wins from four starts at the current meeting, Award Winner is now 17-4-4-1 and with today's winner's purse of $120,000, he increased his earnings to $328,474.

“When he first got here, I didn't think he was gonna like it here,” said Hofmans. “But apparently, he liked it here better than he did back east. Something with the climate here, maybe he likes the warm weather, I don't know. From day-one, he just started blossoming.

“Each week he got stronger, he got heavier, he ate more and he was enjoying his training. I think it's just a change in location, which was important to him. I was so happy when John asked me to take the horse because I wanted to train (Devine Actress's offspring because they are all wonderful. It's kind of a dream come true.”

The lone California-bred in the lineup, Acclimate, a 7-year-old gelding that is trained by Phil D'Amato, ran a sensational race in defeat, finishing 2 1/2 lengths in front of Red King. Off at 9-1, Acclimate paid $12.40 to place.

The prohibitive 1-5 favorite, United never got untracked and checked in last, beaten five lengths with Flavien Prat up.

Fractions on the race were 23.00, 46.66, 1:10.67 and 1:35.34.

Fulsome Edges O Besos, Helium In Matt Winn For Third Consecutive Victory

Last early, Juddmonte Farms' homebred Into Mischief colt Fulsome took command with an eighth of a mile to run and pulled away by 3 3/4 lengths under jockey Florent Geroux to win Saturday's Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes for 3-year-olds at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky,

Trained by Brad Cox, Fulsome ran 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:42.88 and paid $5.40 to win as the 8-5 favorite in his third consecutive victory. Second betting choice at 9-5, O Besos, coming off a fifth-place finish in the G1 Kentucky Derby, was second, with the Derby's eighth-place finisher, Helium, third at 5-2 odds.

Southern Passage, Ready to Pounce, Game Day Play and Sittin On Go completed the order of finish. Hello Hot Rod was scratched.

Helium, winner of the G2 Tampa Bay Derby in March, set the fractions, going :23.75, :48.69 and 1:13.26 for the first six furlongs under Julien Leparoux. Longshot Game Day Play applied pressure under David Cohen, with O Besos making a move on the leaders on the turn for home.

Fulsome began moving up approaching the far turn, rallied wide into the stretch and won geared down at the end after passing the mile marker in 1:36.78.

“I was pretty confident he could take some dirt in his face and got him to relax early,” said Geroux. “I was just hoping they were going fast up front after the slow break. He was able to go past those horses easily to win.”

This was the third consecutive victory for Fulsome, who made his first four starts on turf, winning just once in a maiden race at Fair Grounds on Jan. 16, 2021. He made his dirt debut at Keeneland on April 10 in a race that was taken off the turf because of rain. He drew off that day to win by 3 1/2 lengths in the slop and and came three weeks later to win the $300,000 Oaklawn Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths at Oaklawn Park.

“He had two solid works here at Churchill after winning the Oaklawn Stakes,” said Cox. “We were very confident in him by the way he was training. He got off a step slow but he really finished up fast today and was impressive doing so.”
