Burgoo Alley Best In Autumn Miss At Santa Anita

Burgoo Alley (IRE) was not going to let a little traffic keep her from getting the win in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. Fifth behind horses around the far turn, the daughter of Footstepsinthesand (GB) angled out from the rail and sprinted past Spanish Loveaffair and Zero Tolerance to win the one-mile turf stakes.

Breaking from post three, jockey Umberto Rispoli settled Burgoo Alley in fifth behind frontrunners Zero Tolerance and Spanish Loveaffair around the first turn and into the backstretch. As the field of eight reached the far turn, Burgoo Alley had some horses in front of her, unable to move from her rail spot until they entered the stretch. Rispoli moved her out as Spanish Loveaffair wore down Zero Tolerance. Spanish Loveaffair held the lead briefly, but Burgoo Alley surged past her to win the G3 Autumn Miss by a half-length. Javanica passed Zero Tolerance late to finish third.

“I think the distance is the key for her. Last time we tried six and a half going down the hill. I would not say that she ran a bad race. I think the six and a half was definitely too short for her. I knew today that I could end up in a nice spot. She was sharp from the gate, giving me the chance to be where I wanted to be, just behind the favorite (Spanish Loveaffair) and I got a very nice trip and she put down a nice performance,” Rispoli said after the race. “Because I was on the fence behind Javanica, my first thought was to end up behind Abel (Cedillo, aboard Spanish Loveaffair) since I thought she was the horse to beat. At the five-eighths pole, I was where I wanted to be and she did the rest.”

Bred in Ireland by Eoghan Grogan, Burgoo Alley is out of the Daylami mare Nurama (GB). Trained by Phil D'Amato, the 3-year-old filly is owned by CYBT, Michael Nentwig, and Ray Pagano. Consigned by Killourney Mor Farm, she was an $18,299 RNA at the 2019 Goffs February Mixed Sale. With her victory in the Autumn Miss, the filly has three wins in seven starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 9-3-2-1 and career earnings of $170,330.

Independence Hall Wins Big In Fayette At Keeneland

At the top of the stretch on a sloppy Keeneland track, Code of Honor appeared poised to take over the lead from Independence Hall, but the 2019 Travers winner had no answer for the son of Consitution, who pulled away to win the Grade 2 Fayette at the Lexington, Ky. track.

In a field that included King Fury and Major Fed, it was Independence Hall who was out fastest, taking the lead as the field approached the first turn. Code of Honor settled a length behind him, with Militarist in third. The first two kept their positions throughout, Major Fed and then King Fury moving into third, awaiting their chance to make a run at Independence Hall and Code of Honor.

On the far turn, Tyler Gaffalione pulled the 5-year-old within a half-length of Independence Hall, appearing poised to pass him in the stretch. Instead, Javier Castellano gave his 4-year-old colt some rein and Independence Hall ran away with the G2 Fayette, his margin of victory 7 1/4 lengths at the wire. Code of Honor was second, King Fury third, and Night Ops rounded out the top four.

His win in the G2 Fayette Stakes is Independence Hall's first win in six starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 5-2-2 in 13 starts and career earnings of $874,000.

Americanrevolution Dominant In Empire Classic Handicap At Belmont

China Horse Club and WinStar Farm's Americanrevolution poured on the speed in the stretch of the 1 1/8-mile Empire Classic Handicap to win by 11 3/4 lengths on Empire Showcase Day at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Breaking from the middle of the field of eight, jockey Luis Saez settled Americanrevolution in behind Sea Foam and Mr. Buff early, waiting for the far turn to make his bid for the lead. As Mr. Buff tired, Americanrevolution pulled even with Sea Foam entering the Big Sandy stretch and then pulled away with ease, leaving no doubt as to who the best horse in the field was. At the wire, the son of Consitution had a sizable lead while Wild Banker passed Sea Foam late to take second.

Americanrevolution paid $2.90, $2.70, and $2.10. Wild Banker paid $18.20 and $5.60. Sea Foam paid $5.30.

“He's come a long way in a short period of time. He's a talented horse and showed last time that he belongs with some of the better 3-year-olds in the country, so it was great to have an opportunity like he had today,” trainer Todd Pletcher said after the race.

“The horse has always been learning and getting better and better. Last time he ran hard against Hot Rod Charlie [in the Pennsylvania Derby] and some other tough horses and finished third. Today, he came out well, came to the top of the stretch and had plenty of horse and he did it very easily,” Saez told the NYRA Press Office after the Empire Classic. “We got the trip we wanted. We were breaking outside the speed and so we just tried to sit and keep him comfortable. He came running down the stretch.”

Bred in New York by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Field, Americanrevolution is out of the Super Saver mare Polly Freeze. With his win in the Empire Classic Handicap, the 3-year-old colt has four wins in five starts in 2021 for a lifetime record of four wins in six starts and career earnings of $532,035.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Japan’s Strength In Numbers

French-based Karakontie scored a breakthrough victory in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile in 2014, becoming the first horse bred in Japan to win a championship day race. There is yet to be a Breeders' Cup victory by a horse trained in Japan, though Japanese horsemen have successfully sent runners to Europe, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia and the U.S. for Grade 1 triumphs.

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, Kate Hunter – Breeders' Cup field representative in Japan – joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to talk about the seven Japanese horses expected to participate this year – the largest group ever. (An eighth Japanese runner, Jasper Krone, has been withdrawn.)

Hunter points out that Hideyuki Mori, arguably the most internationally minded Japanese trainer, is leading by example, having sent over the most horses and demonstrating – while yet to win a Breeders' Cup race – that it is well worth trying. Mori has been testing the international waters all the way back to 1995, when he sent Ski Captain from Japan for a run in the Kentucky Derby. Mori will have four entered this year.

Is the year for a Japanese victory? “If you consider that horse racing is a numbers game, we've got the numbers this year,” Hunter said. “I hope it goes in our favor.”
