Notable US-Breds in Japan: Aug. 21, 2021

In this continuing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. With a good amount of American-bred activity this weekend, we will run this information in two installments and with that, here are the horses of interest for Saturday running at Sapporo and Niigata Racecourses. Sunday's notable entrants will appear in Saturday's TDN:

1st-SAP, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT
POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) never really got a hold of the Hakodate main track on debut July 24, but he traveled much better when switched to the grass Aug. 7, finishing a close fifth with a bit of trouble (see below, gate 10). The $750K Keeneland September yearling is not only a half-brother to main-track GISW Weep No More (Mineshaft), but also to Current (Curlin), whose best victory came in the GIII Dixiana Bourbon S. over the Keeneland turf course in 2018. Poison Arrow's second dam, 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks winner Flute (Seattle Slew), was responsible for Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade II winner and four times Grade I-placed on the grass. 5th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
JASPER KRONE (c, 2, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy) is the first produce for his dam, stakes-placed going long on the grass during her sophomore season for trainer Fernando Abreu before being retired to stud in 2018. Descending from the extended female family of the good juvenile Jump Start and from the same A.P. Indy sire line, Jasper Krone was a $25K KEESEP yearling and was hammered down to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $90K after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5 at this year's OBS March Sale. Mirco Demuro has accepted the call. B-Machmer Hall & Godolphin (KY)

BEYOND THE FATHER (JPN) (c, 2, Curlin–Galileo's Song {Jpn}, by Galileo {Ire}), twice graded-placed on the grass for Dell Ridge Farm and Chad Brown, sold for $1 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. Galileo's Song is out of Song to Remember (Storm Cat), who fetched $1.6 million in foal to Tiznow at Fasig-Tipton November in 2006 not long after her daughter Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song) came from last to win the GI Garden City Breeders' Cup S. in New York. Top jockey Mirco Demuro sees fit to ride. B-Shimokobe Farm

7th-NII, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1200m
SCATTER SEED (JPN) (f, 3, Uncle Mo–Scatladybdancing, by Scat Daddy), a distant sixth on Tokyo debut in a single juvenile appearance, cut back in trip for a course-and-distance test and just missed when last seen July 24. The filly's stakes-placed dam, a full-sister to SW Ultima D, was acquired for $390K with the filly in utero at KEENOV in 2017. This is the extended female family of G1SW and successful young sire No Nay Never (Scat Daddy). B-Oiwake Farm

CARABELLA (JPN) (f, 3, Ghostzapper–Include Betty, by Include) is the first produce for her dam, last-to-first winner of the 2015 GI Mother Goose S. for Brereton C. Jones and Tim Thornton and trainer Tom Proctor. The filly hails from an active female family, as Include Betty is the half-sister to Gagetown (Exaggerator), narrow winner of the June 4 Prairie Mile and a latest third in the Iowa Derby July 2. The third dam includes GISW My Trusty Cat (Tale of the Cat) and GSP Entrustment (Forestry). B-Northern Racing

8th-HAK, ¥14,360,000 ($131k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 2000mT
AIR SAGE (c, 3, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker), a half-brother to GSW and $1.6-million earner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), made an enormous debut impression when scoring over this trip at Chukyo Jan. 5 (see below, gate 10) before finishing a close fifth when tried over 2400 meters Feb. 7. Produced by a half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro) and from the deeper female family of Devil's Bag and Saint Ballado, Air Sage will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire, who currently holds a 22-win lead atop the JRA jockeys' premiership. MOZU LOTUS LAND (c, 3, Tapit–Sacred Feather, by Carson City), a $425K Keeneland September acquisition by the owner of MG1SW and now Japanese sire Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}), was a debut sixth to the promising Careerism (Upstart) May 8 ahead of an improved fourth-place effort two weeks later. A half-brother to French GSW & G1SP Taareef (Kitten's Joy), the chestnut is out of a daughter of GSW Marianna's Girl (Dewan), also the dam of MSW/MGSP Crimson Classic (Sky Classic); GSWs Marastani (Shahrastani) and Christine's Outlaw (Wild Again); and SW & GSP Amansara (War Chant), the dam of SW Siem Riep (Tapit). PIONIER (JPN) (f, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Skylander Girl, by Stroll) is the first produce for her Grade III-winning dam, who fetched $260K from Polo Green Stable on behalf of Shimokobe Farm when offered as a broodmare prospect at KEENOV in 2017.  The filly's second dam, Heliotrope (Northern Score), was a Sovereign Award-winning grass mare in Canada. Skylander Girl's foal of 2021, a colt by Satono Aladdin (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), was knocked down for ¥41 million ($369,370) at the JRHA Select Sale earlier this month. B-Shimokobe Farm

1st-HAK, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT
FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria, by Tale of the Cat), a debut fourth going this distance at Tokyo June 13 (video, gate 2), attracted a final bid of $825K last fall at Keeneland September from Yuji Hasegawa, the same owner who gave $1.5 million for Vanishing Point, a full-brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella, at the same auction 12 months prior. Winner of the 2014 GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. for owner Mike Repole, Stopchargingmaria was a $3.15-million buyback at that year's FTKNOV sale before being purchased privately by Louise and Kiki Courtelis' Town and Country Farms. Upset winner of the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the mare remained in training through her 5-year-old season and was knocked down to Three Chimneys for $2.8 million at FTKNOV in 2016. She was most recently acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $4.4 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 FTKNOV sale. Three-year-old filly Stillchargingmaria (Pioneerof the Nile), a $1.9-million graduate of FTKNOV and her dam's first produce, won her maiden at Lone Star Park this past April. 5th-HAK, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1700m
POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) fetched $750K at last year's Keeneland September sale, making him the most expensive of 41 of the late stallion (by Unbridled's Song)'s first-crop yearlings to sell (from 59 through the ring) in 2020. The Mar. 31 foal is a half-brother to $725K KEESEP grad Current (Curlin), a Grade III winner on turf as a juvenile, and to Weep No More (Mineshaft), who upset the 2016 GI Central Bank Ashland S. The chestnut's granddam is Juddmonte's Flute (Seattle Slew), winner of the 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S. and subsequently the dam of Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade III winner and four times placed in Grade I company on the grass. “We were really happy when he was so well accepted,” Hinkle Farms' Henry Hinkle told the TDN's Brian DiDonato after the colt's sale. “We got a lot of compliments on him. He's one of the nicest colts we've ever brought up here to sell.” Filimbi is also responsible for a member of Arrogate's first crop, the 2-year-old colt Calloway Peak, who is in training at Saratoga. FUJIN SHOJO (f, 2, Speightstown–Big Raven {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}), a $235K KEESEP acquisition, is sadly the lone produce of her dam, a daughter of GSW Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), who produced GISW Competitionofideas to the cover of Speightstown in 2015. The progeny of the WinStar stallion have long been coveted in Japan, as he is the sire to date of 33 winners from 37 starters, including GISW mare Mozu Superflare; Matera Sky, a Group 3 winner at home, runner-up in the 2019 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and twice an unlucky loser of the Saudi Sprint; and three additional black-type winners.
