Just A Princess Tops Arqana Grand Steeple Sale

Arqana's Grand Steeple Sale at Saint-Cloud Racecourse grossed €2,313,000 with 29 lots sold from 35 (83%) through the ring. The Magdalen Bryant Dispersal accounted for €1,043,000 of that total, which consisted of the first 21 lots in the catalogue. The average was €79,759 and the median was €55,000.

An even 10 lots made six figures or better, and it was the AQPS Just A Princess (Fr) (Ivanhowe {Ger}) (lot 5), a member of trainer David Cottin's consignment and part of that dispersal, that topped the sale. The sophomore was knocked down for €260,000 on a bid from Anthony Bromley's Highflyer Bloodstock. She holds an entry into the G3 Prix Sagan at Saint-Cloud on Saturday.

Bromley was also in action for the second-highest lot on the day, the €200,000 Zarak The Brave (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) (lot 8). Offered by Stephane Wattel, the bay is already a winner on the Flat and will be sent to Willie Mullins to further his career in the National Hunt sphere.

After the sale, Bryant's daughter KC Graham said, “This is a very special day for us, full of emotion. What can I say, we are very happy with the results of this sale. The horses sold well, they were eagerly awaited and it's a great tribute to our mother and to David Powell. We loved David's genius, to whom we owe today's results.”

Record Turnover Reached at Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale

Demand for horses-in-training and point-to-pointers was strong at Goffs UK's Doncaster complex on Wednesday, which reached record turnover of £5,085,700 during the first session. Of the 180 lots through the ring, 162 sold for a 90% clearance rate. The average was £31,393 (-1.1%) just down on 2021 and the median was marginally lower at 4% (£22,000).

Leading the way among the pointers and bumper horses that made up the majority of the first session was Porthill (Ire) (Flemensfirth), who brought £250,000 from the buying duo of H. Kirk and Willie Mullins. Consigned by Colin McKeever's Loughanmore Farms, the 4-year-old gelding (lot 420) placed second on debut and is from the family of Grade 1 winner Relegate (Ire) (Flemensfirth).

Of the other six lots to make six figures, the placed Passing Well (Fr) (Coastal Path {GB}) (lot 465) was next at £185,000. From the Leighmoney Stables draft, the gelding caught the eye of Tom Malone and Jamie Snowden.

Rounding out the top three was lot 431, Myretown (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Another consigned by Leighmoney Stables, the winning point-to-pointer and half-brother to Grade 3-placed hurdler A Fine Young Man (Ire) (Snurge) was purchased for £135,000 by Tom Malone and Lucinda Russell.

The second and final day of the Doncaster Spring HIT/PTP Sale will begin at 10 a.m. and feature the Million In Mind Dispersal.

Record Price at Doncaster as Spring Store Sale Ends

The Goffs UK Spring Store Sale at Doncaster came to a close on Tuesday, and figures were the second highest achieved in the sale's history. Of the five lots that made six-figure sums over the two-day stand, three of them went through the ring during the second session, led by a gelded son of Gris de Gris (Ire) as lot 301. Henriette Knight paid £155,000 for the bay from the Brown Island Stables draft, who is from the same family as the listed hurdler Queen des Places (Fr) (Sabrehill), who has also placed twice at Grade 1 level, as did his half-sibling Allblak des Places (Fr) (Full of Gold {Fr}), who was second in the G1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle.

Lot 184, a son of Getaway (Ger) and representing Oak Tree Farm, was a £140,000 acquisition for Gordon Bloodstock. His unraced dam is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Binocular (Fr) (Enrique {GB}).

A filly by Kapgarde (Fr) (lot 272) hammered at £110,000 from Jerry McGrath. Hailing from the Goldford Stud consignment, she is out of the listed-placed hurdler Brise Vendeenne (Fr) (Dom Alco {Fr}), herself a half-sister to outstanding multiple Grade 1 winner Vroum Vroum Mag (Fr) (Voix du Nord {Fr}).

At the close of sale, 120 sold (83%) from 144 offered on Tuesday for a gross of £3,751,000. The average was £31,258 (-2%) and the median was £23,000 (-8%). Taking the sale as a whole, the gross was £7,159,500 for 226 of 272 offered (83%). The average was £31,679 (-1%) and the median was £25,000 (-4%).

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “We have added another successful chapter to the Spring Store Sale's 60-year history and it seems fitting that it was this year that we set a new record top price for a British store with yesterday's £200,000 top price.

“Last year we ambitiously expanded this sale to two top-class days, set new records across the board, and on the back of that, we doubled the prize fund of our bumper to £100,000, making it the richest bumper in the world. We have invested a lot into the sale, it holds an important place on the calendar being Britain's only elite store sale, so to see it maintain the ground it gained last year, whilst setting more new records, is very gratifying and we can look back over the last 12-months and be very pleased with what it has achieved.”

Affinisea Gelding Leads May Store Sale

Lot 179, a gelded 3-year-old son of Affinisea (Ire) topped the Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale at €50,000. The Knockalane House offering went to Ballyboy Stables.

Right behind him was a gelding by Workforce (GB) (lot 103) from Rathywork Stud, agent to Milestone Bloodstock. The son of Blazing Dawn (Ire) (Presenting {GB}) was knocked down for €48,000. His second dam is listed hurdle winner Blazing Sky (Ire) (Beneficial {GB}).

Third on the buyers' sheets was lot 68, J'Suis Kashe Bam's (Fr) (Buck's Boum {Fr}), a member of Liss House's draft. Joey Logan Bloodstock shelled out €47,000 for the bay gelding. His dam, Urkashe (Fr) (Clety {Fr}) was placed in the Listed Prix Rigoletto Chase at Auteuil.

Overall, 165 horses sold from 207 offered for an improved clearance rate of 80%. The gross was €2,704,400. The average decreased 8% to €16,390 and the median dropped to €13,000 (-15%).

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “Today saw the first store sale take place on its original dates for the first time in two years and the trade has been very strong. Most noteworthy was the record clearance rate which increased to 80% and turnover that surpassed the 2018 and 2019 May Store Sale sessions. We extend our thanks to our vendors for providing us with quality horses as well as every purchaser who engaged as they sought to find their next star.”
