Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Ins And Outs Before Post Position Draw

There have been a number of key withdrawals prior to Monday afternoon's post position draw for the 14 Breeders' Cup championship races on Nov. 5-6 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

The draw will be conducted in the Del Mar paddock beginning at 2:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. ET and is open to the public. It can also be viewed on TVG or at breederscup.com, the Breeders' Cup mobile app or the Breeders' Cup YouTube, Facebook or Twitter pages.

In this edition of the News Minute, Ray Paulick reviews some of the key defections from Breeders' Cup races, including G1 Santa Anita Handicap winner Idol from the Classic, leaving the 1 1/4-mile test with nine expected starters led by trainer Brad Cox's two Horse of the Year candidates, Knicks Go and Essential Quality.

Paulick also has a tip for those out-of-towners coming to San Diego County for the Breeders' Cup and it has to do with what many of our mothers told us is the most important meal of the day.

For those not coming to Breeders' Cup (and limited tickets are still available), NBCSN and TVG will carry all the action on Future Stars Friday from 5-9 p.m. ET. On Saturday, NBCSN and TVG will televise the championships from 2:30-8 p.m. ET. The NBC network takes over from 8-9 p.m. ET for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: International Pre-Entries At Record Level

A record 56 international runners was pre-entered for the Nov. 5-6 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar racetrack near San Diego, Calif. Overall, 196 horses were pre-entered for the 14 races that culminate with the Nov. 6 $6-million Longines Classic. With a 5:40 p.m. Pacific post time, the Classic will be aired on prime-time television on the East Coast on the NBC network between 8-9 p.m. ET.

The ink hadn't dried on the pre-entry forms yet when it was learned there will be at least one defection from overseas. Trainer Aidan O'Brien said Order of Australia would not make the trip from Ireland to defend his title in the Breeders' Cup Mile after suffering a setback on Wednesday morning. Order of Australia was one of eight returning Breeders' Cup winners pre-entered. The others are Knicks Go, Essential Quality, Tarnawa, Audarya, Gamine, Glass Slippers and Golden Pal.

Final entries are due on the morning of Monday, Nov. 1, with post positions drawn that afternoon in the Del Mar paddock at 2:30 p.m. The general public is invited to attend.

In this Breeders' Cup News Minute, publisher Ray Paulick takes a closer look at some of the pre-entries and offers a historical perspective on what races have on average provided the biggest (and lowest) payouts.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Future Stars Friday Seals Juvenile Championships

Vequist and Essential Quality locked up Eclipse Awards in their respective divisions with victories in the Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile on the Breeders' Cup Future Stars Friday program at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick says in the latest Breeders' Cup News Minute.

Star of the day was trainer Brad Cox, who won his first Breeders' Cup race in 2018 and now has five championship victories after sending out Aunt Pearl to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Essential Quality to his Juvenile triumph.

The main track was very fast on Friday, but horses did win from off the lead if the pace scenario set things up for them. Horses won both on the lead and from off the pace on a turf course rated “good.”

Saturday's big day of nine championship races gets under way at 10:15 a.m. Eastern, with the first Breeders' Cup race scheduled for 12:02 p.m. Of note is the $260,779 Pick 6 carryover that spices up a wagering extravaganza for horseplayers.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Can O’Brien Regain Magical Touch?

Two horses have been withdrawn from Saturday's Breeders' Cup world championship races at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky.: Inthemidstofbiz from the Filly & Mare Sprint and One Master from the Mile. That follows the news on Wednesday that morning line favorite Vekoma is out of Saturday's Breeders' Cup Sprint.

The scratch of One Master opens the gate for Order of Australia to draw into the Mile from the also-eligible list. The colt by the Galileo stallion Australia is one of six runners expected to run in Breeders' Cup races on Saturday for trainer Aidan O'Brien, who has three entered in the Future Stars Friday races.

In today's edition of the News Minute, Ray Paulick reviews O'Brien's impressive Breeders' Cup statistics: he's second all-time in starts and money won and fourth in wins. But he points out that O'Brien's Breeders' Cup record since 2016 has been anything but “magical.”

Paulick also reveals who he thinks might be the speed of the speed in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
