Aidan O’Brien Fined for Fillies’ Mile Saddling Error

Following a BHA inquiry into a saddling error that occurred prior to the running of the G1 Fillies' Mile, trainer Aidan O'Brien has been fined £4,000. His two fillies, Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), apparently ran eighth and third in the event, but O'Brien quickly alerted the British Horseracing Authority that in fact the horses had swapped saddle towels and jockeys. The BHA amended the result with Mother Earth and Snowfall correctly placed third and eighth, respectively. O'Brien was not present at Newmarket the day of the race due to traveling restrictions amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Since the incident at Newmarket, additional ID checks have been in place at major Flat fixtures to minimize the risk of a reoccurrence,” said a BHA spokesperson. “A longer-term piece of work has been ongoing since October to look at the additional resource, technology and funding required to implement a further ID check once horses are saddled.

“It is particularly challenging in the current environment due to the additional resourcing requirements that the BHA's Covid-19 protocols already place upon staffing levels, but additional checks are being carried out on a discretionary basis.

“We will continue the work looking at the feasibility of implementing an additional check following saddling permanently and communicate any changes to participants and the public as necessary.”

Cheveley Park Stud Owner/Breeder Thompson Dies At 84

David Thompson, owner of Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, England, has died due to renal failure at the age of 84, according to The Blood-Horse.

Cheveley Park Stud has been home to multiple influential stallions since Thompson purchased the property in 1975. The most notable was Pivotal, winner of the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes and sire of 150 black type winners, who is still breeding today.

Thompson also found success on the track with Russian Rhythm, Echelon, Red Bloom, Integral, and 2016 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner, Queen's Trust, to name a few.

“David Thompson was a very generous, meticulous, sometimes unpredictable man, who always had a certain charm,” said Chris Richardson, the stud's managing director. “He inspired everyone with his insatiable enthusiasm for business which, thankfully, included a love of racing and breeding, alongside his wife, Patricia, and their family.”

It was a record-breaking year for video production at the TDN, and for video views, with over 3.8 million TDN videos and advertisers’ commercials shown on our platforms. 3. The Incomparable, Invincible, Unbeatable Cigar. 56,962 views. This 20-minute video wasn’t published until October 16 under the TDN Look banner, but still racked up an impressive amount of views…even if it was a little depressing when Tom Durkin told us that what he had really said was “unconquerable” and not “incomparable.” Whoops.
  4. A.P. Indy Turns 30. 51,968 views. Here’s another video with legs: published in March, 2019, it racked up over 50,000 views in 2020 alone.

  10. Volatile Settling in at Three Chimneys, 26,182 views. New stallion visits are always popular, and Volatile sat just off the pace of Authentic as this year’s leader.
  11. Tour Newmarket With John Berry, 23,052 views. Early on in the pandemic, we tried to help people feel as if they were getting out of their homes with video tours. John Berry was kind enough to take us on a multi-part tour of Newmarket and the series drew tens of thousands of views.

Deirdre To Visit Galileo In 2021

A new direction in the extraordinary odyssey of the Japanese mare Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}-Reizend {Jpn, by Special Week {Jpn}) began on Monday when the 6-year-old left her adopted home of Newmarket to begin her stud career in Ireland. Her first mating is planned to be with Coolmore’s champion sire Galileo (Ire).

Bred by Northern Farm and raced by Toji Morita, Deirdre’s first three seasons of racing were restricted largely to Japan, where she won five races, including the G1 Shuka Sho. She also took third in the G1 Dubai Turf on her first start outside her native country. Following her return visit to the Dubai World Cup meeting in 2019, Deirdre travelled on to Hong Kong and then to Newmarket, which has subsequently remained her base for an ambitious international campaign.

On her second start in Britain she became the first Japanese-trained horse to win a Group 1 contest in Europe when triumphing in the Nassau S. at Goodwood. Since then, she has run in Ireland, Saudi Arabia, France and, finally, Bahrain last month.

Yoshi Hashida, whose father Mitsuru has trained Deirdre throughout her career, told TDN, “She is going to the next phase but the moments we spent in Newmarket and around the world will be the memories we cherish forever. She will visit Galileo and probably stay in Ireland for two or three years before returning to Japan.”

Throughout her lengthy stay in England at Abington Place, Deirdre has been accompanied by her daily rider Yuta Komiyama, who has become as well known on Newmarket Heath as his famous mount.
