Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Relocated To Newmarket

The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale will for the second consecutive year be moved from its base at Fairyhouse to Tattersalls's headquarters at Park Paddocks in Newmarket due to ongoing concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic in Ireland, specifically whether international buyers will be able to attend without undergoing lengthy quarantines.

The three-day sale will now take place a week earlier than originally scheduled, with Part I on Sept. 14 and 15 and Part II on Sept. 16.

Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Simon Kerins said, “The decision to relocate to Newmarket has not been taken lightly, especially having had to relocate the September Yearling Sale in 2020 but, given the disruption we experienced at the Derby Sale, it is now clear to us that we cannot rely on a 'bubble' which would allow overseas buyers to visit Ireland without onerous quarantine requirements. The September Yearling Sale traditionally attracts large numbers of overseas visitors and at present Britain, while also being the main source of our buyers, is considerably more accessible than Ireland.

“We are hopeful that this will be the last change to our 2021 sales calendar and have taken the decision at this early stage to provide clarity to our loyal vendors prior to entries closing next week. We are confident that relocating the sale to Park Paddocks will again allow Tattersalls Ireland to achieve our constant objective of providing a vibrant market by attracting the widest and most diverse group of buyers that we possibly can. The relocated 2020 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale returned record breaking figures with a top lot of £325,000 and more horses selling for £150,000 or more than ever before. Vendors have already been supporting the sale this year with their better quality stock and we look forward to another successful renewal of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale at Park Paddocks in Newmarket.”

Goffs Orby Moves To Newmarket

The Goffs Orby Sale will for the second straight year be staged away from its traditional home in Co. Kildare, this year taking place at Tattersalls's Park Paddocks in Newmarket as the result of an agreement between the two sales companies. Originally slated for Sept. 28 and 29, the sale will now be held across two evening sessions on Sept. 24 and 25 after racing at Newmarket and with a daytime session on Sept. 26. The sale will, therefore, be held in conjunction with the Cambridgeshire meeting that features the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Middle Park S.

The Goffs Sportsman's Sale, which traditionally follows on from the Orby Sale, will remain in Ireland and be held in conjunction with the Goffs Autumn Yearling and HIT Sale on Nov. 1 and 2.

The Goffs changes were announced after the Irish government announced it will scrap plans to resume indoor hospitality from July 5 amid concerns about the Delta Covid-19 variant. Ireland's travel and quarantine rules remain among the strictest on the continent. Last week, a UK buyers' bubble established by Tattersalls Ireland that facilitated around 100 UK residents to travel to Ireland for the Derby sale was quashed by the government on the morning of the sale. Referring to that episode, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Last week's events mean that there is currently no confidence in our ability to hold the prestigious Orby Sale in Ireland whilst the current travel restrictions into Ireland remain in place. The overseas buyers 'bubble' that worked so well for the Goffs Land Rover Sale was being replicated at the Derby Sale but was inexplicably withdrawn at the eleventh hour and there is simply no way that vendors, or Goffs, can take the risk that the same thing could happen on the eve of the Orby Sale as there is too much at stake.

“In 2020 we took a later decision to move Orby to our UK sales complex in Doncaster but it is well known that the results were disappointing to say the least and potential Orby vendors have made it clear that is not an option that would be embraced. Therefore we feel it is in the best interests of Irish vendors selling in Orby to clearly state that the sale will be held in Newmarket in conjunction with some top class racing, as we cannot confidently deliver overseas buyers to Kildare, making it impossible for us to properly promote our world-class catalogue to an international audience.

“In many ways this is a disappointing move to have to make but we feel we have been left with no choice by recent events, as yearling vendors need certainty given the value of the yearlings we are asking them to commit to Orby. Our fervent hope and belief is that we will back in Kildare Paddocks for Orby 22 as the Irish National Yearling Sale belongs in Ireland.

“At this point I would like to thank Edmond Mahony and his Tattersalls' colleagues for giving us the option to essentially rent Park Paddocks and accommodate what is a competitor sale. The last 18 months have required all of us to work together in ways we could never have imagined and, whilst there has been plenty of mutually beneficial cooperation and give and take, this is a step further than anything else. We do not underestimate the magnitude of this generous gesture.”

Saffron Beach Greenlit For Falmouth

Group 1-placed Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) will return to the races in the July 9 G1 Tattersalls Falmouth S. at Newmarket during the Moet & Chandon July Festival. A winner of her first two starts as a juvenile including the G3 Oh So Sharp S. at HQ in October, the chestnut ran second in the Apr. 14 G3 Nell Gwyn S. and filled the same position in the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas S. on May 2. Saffron Beach was only eighth in the G1 Cazoo Oaks in unsuitable ground on June 4.

Trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said, “The Falmouth has been on the radar as she will get a good bit of weight off the older horses. She had an easy week training and out at grass after the Oaks and we have been gradually building her back up for the Falmouth.

“Adam Kirby said it was just too heavy for her at Epsom. He wasn't hard on her in the last two furlongs and he let her come home in her own time.

“Instead of rushing her for the Coronation S. at Royal Ascot, which would have again been on heavy ground, we did the right thing and gave her a bit more time as we have got five weeks between the Oaks and the Falmouth S. It is a hard mile on the July Course so we will give it a go and hope for a bit better ground. Hopefully we will see her shine through like she did on all those races over on the Rowley Mile.”

She added, “Adam Kirby is very sure that she will get a mile and a quarter. The unknown was the mile and a half but we never really got a true gauge if she got it on really heavy going.

“I think we would be sticking to a mile and then possibly going up to a mile and a quarter as planned if not this season then next as she will race again next year. We will just take each race as it comes as the traffic light system for travelling changes from month to month and even getting to France is tricky. She appears to be training well and I think while we have got races in England for her we will enjoy the racing here.”

Walsh: Extravagant Kid To Remain Overseas, Target July Cup

Following a strong third-place effort in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, trainer Brendan Walsh told TVG Insider News he plans to leave Extravagant Kid overseas to contest the G1 July Cup on Newmarket on July 10.

“He's come out of (the King's Stand) good so we're going to leave him there and take a shot at the July Cup,” Walsh told TVG Insider News. “He's there and he ran so well at Ascot, so another 3-4 weeks there, why not? He's in a nice environment and he seems to be doing well. And I think the timing would be good.”

Claimed by Walsh and DARRS, Inc. for $75,000 in January of 2018, the 8-year-old gelding has gotten better with age. Extravagant Kid earned his first Grade 1 victory earlier this year in Dubai's Al Quoz Sprint, and his overall record currently stands at 15-16-7 from 51 starts for earnings of $1,634,733.
