Grimwade Appointed General Manager At Varian Stable

Newmarket native Kate Grimwade has returned to her home town to take up the role of general manager for Roger Varian's stable.

Grimwade grew up on the National Stud where her father Joe was manager and was later among the original 12 trainees for the inaugural Darley (now Godolphin) Flying Start programme. On the course she met Hanako Sonobe, who later married Varian.

“It's nearly 20 years ago that we started the Flying Start, which seems crazy, but Hanako and all of us from the course have remained very good friends, particularly the girls,” says Grimwade. “Then I did the sales with Roger and Hana last year, and Roger couldn't go to the Breeders' Cup but Hana had a runner and she asked me to go. Things built from there really, and Roger offered me this new role, which is really exciting.”

Grimwade has had international experience in training and pre-training yards. After graduating from the Flying Start she worked as racing manager to Gai Waterhouse in Australia before heading Godolphin's pre-training operation for eight years back in Newmarket. She later returned to Australia to take up the role as assistant trainer to James Cummings.

“My role now is probably what Australian trainers would describe as a racing manager but Roger has a racing manager so I am very much not that,” she says. “I think it's very forward-thinking of Roger to create this role. His [horse] numbers have grown dramatically in the 10 years that he has had a licence so I think he has seen a gap for someone to come in. I'll sit between the assistant trainer and Roger and have an overview of the equine side of the business. Hopefully as time goes on I can take on some of Roger's existing workload to free him up to concentrate on the important things.”

Grimwade adds, “He has a great team already–a very strong team of head lads who each look after a different division of the yard and then obviously he has an assistant and pupil assistant, so there is still that sort of classic structure within the yard.”

Since returning to England from Australia the second time, Grimwade has been employed as a key worker through the pandemic at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

She says, “I've had a year and a half out of racing so I have had a good freshen up. I think it has been really good for me because I grew up in racing and left school at 16 so it's been good to get a bit of perspective. It also makes you feel very grateful for your health.”

Grimwade, who started earlier this week at Varian's Carlburg Stables on Newmarket's Bury Road, situated between the yards of Sir Michael Stoute and John Gosden, adds, “The house I grew up in overlooked the July Course and then when I was working for Godolphin I was on the Rowley Mile, so I am gradually working my way across town. It's really exciting to get to know those gallops really well as the two sides of town are quite different.”

Oxted Faces 22 in July Cup Defence

A total of 23 horses have been confirmed for the July 10 G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket, including Roger Teal's 2020 victor Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}). Second in the G3 Abernant S. at HQ on Apr. 15, the entire was third behind the reopposing Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) in the G2 Duke Of York S. on May 12, prior to doubling his Group 1 tally in the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot on June 15. Dual group winner and last out June 19 Wokingham S. hero Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}) and listed winner Line Of Departure (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) were both supplemented.

“It feels like a real championship race, you have all the best horses of the generation in there, but it's a shame not to have the Diamond Jubilee winner there alongside the King's Stand winner,” Starman's trainer Ed Walker said. “Starman has got an opportunity to be the sprinter of his generation because he's only got the one blip on his record, I'd love to think he could be the next Muhaarar.

“He's done absolutely nothing wrong bar that run on bad ground, I just don't know how much is up his sleeve–only he can answer that question and hopefully he does answer it on Saturday.”

Group 3 winner Chil Chil (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) is “at the top of her game” according to her trainer Andrew Balding and is trying the Group 1 level for the first time. The King Power Racing 5-year-old is lining up for the July Cup. A half-sister to four-time Group 2 winner Beat The Bank (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}), Chil Chil saluted in a May 1 handicap at Newmarket and earned a career high when saluting in the G3 William Hill Chipchase S. at Newcastle on June 26.

“She will go for the July Cup if the ground is good or faster,” said Balding. “She showed some pretty useful form last year when conditions were right and she was a little bit unfortunate on a couple of occasions. Beat The Bank, her brother, got better with age and it appears she is. It is a big step up in class but she likes the track at Newmarket and I don't see why she won't like this one, so why not have a go?

“She travelled strongly at Newcastle and I was impressed with the way she picked up in the second half of the race. She is clearly a filly at the top of her game. It would be nice if she could prove up to this level.”

First past the post in the G1 Commonwealth Cup S. at Royal Ascot, but disqualified for interference, Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) returns for trainer Archie Watson. Watson also sends out G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprit S. winner Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who was second to the now-injured Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. also at Royal Ascot.

Among the other entrants as of Monday are: G3 Jersey S. winner Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for trainer Charlie Appleby, G1 Middle Park S. hero Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) for trainer Clive Cox, Joseph O'Brien's Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) who won the G1 National S., the group winner Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Tim Easterby and G1 Queen Anne S. second Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) for Aidan O'Brien.

Snow Lantern “Fresh as a Daisy” For Falmouth

Group 1-placed Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was second by 1 1/2 lengths in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot on June 18, is “fresh as a daisy” according to trainer Richard Hannon in advance of the July 9 G1 Tattersalls Falmouth S. at Newmarket during the Moet & Chandon July Festival.

Hannon said of the daughter of 2013 G1 1000 Guineas winner and Falmouth runner-up Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}), “She hasn't won a 1000 Guineas like her mum but she is going there hopefully to win where her mother didn't but should have and it would be nice if she did just that. She is as fresh as a daisy. She is in good nick and is good enough to win a race like this. There is a score to be settled there and it would give us some sort of closure.”

Second when unveiled at Ascot in late July of 2020, the grey earned her 'TDN Rising Star' badge with a tally at Newbury in a maiden stakes on Apr. 18. Kept out of the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas, she picked up some black-type when third in the Listed Michael Seely Memorial S. at York on May 14 prior to her Coronation effort. Coronation S. heroine Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never is likely to turn up in the Falmouth.

“She was back to her best at Ascot,” Hannon continued. “She came with a lovely run, she just got tight for room for a little bit but she ran a lovely race and it showed you could put a line through the York effort. She hasn't been thrown in the deep end every time this year or last year but we are there now and she is able to compete at that level, she just needs to get a bit of luck.”

Wokingham Hero Rohaan Supplemented to July Cup

Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}), winner of the Wokingham S. at Royal Ascot June 19, will be supplemented to the July 10 G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket. The 3-year-old was precluded from running in the G1 Commonwealth Cup during the Royal meeting since the event precludes geldings from competing. In the Wokingham, the Irish-bred closed from last to defeat 20 rivals.

“He was unbelievable in the Wokingham with top-weight [9st 8lb], said trainer David Evans. “Rohaan is fine, he's very well.    The plan is to supplement for the July Cup, especially if they get a bit of rain, which they might.”

He added, “There's still more to come from him, I think. He's the horse of a lifetime, I'm lucky to have him.”

Prior to his Wokingham victory, Rohaan edged out Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire})–first across the wire but demoted to second in his latest start in the Commonwealth–in the G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock May 22.
