Middle Park Glory For Ardad’s Perfect Power

Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. at Newmarket looked a tight affair on paper and although there were just 1 3/4 lengths covering the first seven home, there was ultimately a degree of comfort in the victory of the G1 Prix Morny hero Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}). Freshened up since his success for Christophe Soumillon in the Morny over this six-furlong trip at Deauville Aug. 22, the Richard Fahey-trained bay was one of the last to play his hand under that rider but was a cosy half-length winner from Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) to complete the prestigious juvenile double. Positioned with only Castle Star behind as the early pace proved hot, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's 11-4 favourite was cajoled into action passing halfway and arrived widest of all to hit the front 100 yards from home. Strong to the line as he had been in Normandy and in the G2 Norfolk S., he had too many guns for Castle Star who denied Armor (GB) (No Nay Never) the runner's-up spot by a neck. “For a 2-year-old, he's very special. He's very easy and has a super mind,” Fahey said. “When he's not exercising he eats and then goes to sleep. With two furlongs to run I thought we were in a bit of trouble, but when he pulled him out he picked up very well.”

Introduced over five furlongs in a May 25 Newcastle novice, Perfect Power ran a respectable third before going to Hamilton to show his now-trademark acceleration eight days before the Norfolk. That was a tight turnaround to the Royal Ascot contest, but he was in no mood to back off and delivered his closing surge to overhaul Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) there before heading to the Goodwood Festival. Tackling six furlongs for the first time in the July 29 G2 Richmond S., he enjoyed no luck in running when fifth behind Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) but enjoyed a clear run at his rivals in the Morny to regain his mantle. This was close, but he has now overcome all that has been thrown at him when able to produce his late charge unhindered.

Soumillon also believes he was able to overcome difficulties with the undulations of this track and a perceived stand's rail bias. “My horse stumbled twice going downhill. I didn't lose confidence in him, but lost a little ground there,” he said. “When I took him out and he was running uphill, he found his gear and quickened like he did last time at Deauville. I was drawn one and in the race before we saw that the rail was beneficial. I was happy on Friday with my draw, because I knew if everyone was staying in the middle of the track it would be easy for me to come from the back but after 200 metres or so everyone was going to the fence and I knew it was going to be difficult to come from so far back. The pace was good, which was the key part of it. I'm sure he's much better on a flat track, but what he did today probably showed he's the best 2-year-old in Europe at the moment. I even think he can handle seven furlongs.”

Fahey had made clear his fears about the one draw for the £110,000 Goffs UK Breeze Up graduate. “I've been watching racing all week and when we got stall one I thought 'someone down there doesn't like me!'. I was very negative in my own mind, but he is a special horse,” he said. “The way he quickened up today–it took a special ride and a special special horse to win like that today. He's a ball of a horse who has had a busy enough time. When you go to Royal Ascot, then you go to Glorious Goodwood and then Deauville and then here it's tough, but he loves it. He could step up on pedigree. His sire was a fast 2-year-old and we don't know much about his progeny, but on the dam's side we've every chance of staying.”

Perfect Power, who has flown the flag for his first-season sire whose progeny have impressed in 2021, is the first foal out of Sagely (Ire) (Frozen Power {Ire}) who stayed 12 furlongs. She is a granddaughter of Saga D'Ouilly (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), who is a full-sister to the Arc hero Sagamix (Fr) and a half to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) and to Shastye (Ire) (Danehill). She needs no introduction as the dam of the high-class Galileo (Ire) trio of Japan (GB), Mogul (GB) and Secret Gesture (GB), while this is also the Aga Khan family of Sagamiyra (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) who took this year's G3 Prix du Pin and was second in the G1 Prix Rothschild. Sagely's yearling filly by Kodiac (GB) sells on Tuesday at Goffs Orby, while she also has a colt foal by Galileo Gold (GB).

Hello You Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth In Rockfel Stakes

Amo Racing Limited's Hello You (IRE) announced herself as one of the best 2-year-old fillies in Europe, as she quickened clear in Friday's Unibet Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket's Rowley Mile course. Her 1 ½-length success secures a guaranteed start into the US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

Hello You, a bay daughter of Invincible Spirit (IRE) out of the Pivotal (GB) mare Lucrece (GB), won impressively on her debut at Wolverhampton back in May but had been unable to get her head in front in four efforts since. Ridden by her regular partner Rossa Ryan, Hello You sat just off the pace set by the George Boughey-trained pair Oscula (IRE) and Cachet (IRE) before accelerating past them both to give young trainer David Loughnane a second Group 2 success of the season, after Go Bears Go (IRE) claimed the GAIN Railway Stakes (G2) at The Curragh in June.

Hello You moved yards from Ralph Beckett to Loughnane at the start of August and her new trainer acknowledged Beckett's work with the filly.

Loughnane said: “She's strengthened up loads over the last month. She arrived with us from Mr. Beckett's in great order, and we're very privileged and lucky to have a horse of her caliber in the yard. I think she'd go on any ground. I said beforehand that she's a Group horse and deserved a Group win beside her name – and I'm delighted she's proved herself today. The Amo team have thought a lot of her from day one. She was very impressive on debut, and you couldn't knock what she did at Royal Ascot.”

When asked about Hello You's future plans, Loughnane declared that connections have their sights set on a trip to the Breeders' Cup.

“I know Kia (Joorabchian) is very keen to potentially have a crack at the Breeders' Cup (Juvenile Fillies Turf) in Del Mar in November. We've always felt she'll be better over 1-mile and she's just outstayed them today over the 7 furlongs.”

Newmarket trainer George Boughey has enjoyed a fantastic season, and he saddled both Cachet and Oscula to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Hello You (7/1) finished the 7-furlongs in 1:23:12, defeating eight rivals over a course listed as good-to-firm.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Hello You to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will be run at 1-mile over the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance of US$40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.

Masekela Heads ‘Win And You’re In’ Royal Lodge Saturday At Newmarket

Mick and Janice Mariscotti's Masekela (IRE) heads a field of seven in Saturday's Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (G2) at Newmarket. The 1-mile contest, restricted to 2-year-old colts and geldings, offers a guaranteed fees-paid berth into the US$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

The Andrew Balding-trained Masekela (IRE) boasts impressive form ahead of this Group 2 contest. A winner on debut, the son of El Kabeir finished fifth to subsequent Group 2 winner Point Lonsdale (IRE) in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, before placing second by a short head behind Native Trail (GB) in the bet365 Superlative Stakes (G2) at Newmarket on July 10. Godolphin's Native Trail (GB) recently enjoyed top-level success in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (G1) at The Curragh on Sept. 12, with Point Lonsdale (IRE) in second.

Stepping up to race over 1-mile for the first time, Masekela (IRE) was last seen taking the 7-furlong listed Denford Stakes under Oisin Murphy at Newbury on Aug. 14. Murphy has the ride again with connections hoping the 2-year-old colt can continue the stable's good form.

Trainer Andrew Balding said: “He's been working well at home and is in good form. I think the extra furlong should really suit him in this race. We're looking forward to the Royal Lodge and fingers crossed he can put in another good performance.”

Royal Patronage (FR), a two-time winner this season, heads the opposition for trainer Mark Johnston. The son of Wootton Bassett (GB) was last seen scoring a big upset in the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York on Aug. 18, winning by 2 ¼ lengths at 25-1. Jason Hart takes the ride.

Owned and bred by Godolphin, Coroebus (IRE) makes a significant jump up in grade after winning in his sole start to date – a novice stakes at Newmarket on Aug. 13. The Charlie Appleby-trained son of Dubawi (IRE) will be partnered by William Buick.

Four-time Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winning trainer Aidan O'Brien fields Howth (IRE), who was a close-up fourth in the “Win and You're In” KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes (G2) at The Curragh last time out. O'Brien's son Donnacha saddles Atlantic Thoroughbreds' Unconquerable (IRE). In his most recent start, the son of Churchill (IRE) placed third in the Japan Racing Association Tyros Stakes (G3) at Leopardstown on Jul. 22. Frankie Dettori has the mount.

Completing the line-up are Oneforthegutter (GB) and Seattle King (GB). The Ian Williams-trained Oneforthegutter (GB) placed second by a head in the Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin Stakes (G3) at Deauville last time out, while Seattle King (GB), trained by Ralph Beckett, steps up in company after finishing fourth behind Masekela (IRE) in the Denford Stakes.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes winner to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, which will be run at 1-mile on the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance of US$40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.

Sacred Moments

While Saturday sees the hosting of the signature race of Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire meeting, the card is mostly about the 2-year-olds with the venue staging its pair of six-furlong jewels in the G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. and G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. In the former, Ger Lyons will be hoping that his stable's current purple patch can continue with the sponsors' unbeaten Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) who looked to be moving still upwards in the G3 Round Tower S. at The Curragh Aug. 27. That form has taken a couple of knocks subsequently, so she will need to raise her game again to justify her current cramped odds but as a full-sister to Viadera (GB) she is about more than just precocity.

“I wouldn't change her for anything,” Lyons said ahead of the race that launched him onto a bigger stage via the exploits of Lightening Pearl (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) in 2011. “What other trainers are doing is their business and my job is to get this filly there on Saturday in good health and if she rocks up and does what she has been doing all summer then happy days. This is her sternest test, she's stepping into the big leagues now in Group 1 level and invariably they fail and that's not to be negative. In the Round Tower, I thought the way she did it in group company was visually spectacular and it was also fast ground, which I think is the key to her. She hasn't let me down yet. After the Round Tower, I don't think she's out of her depth.”

Primed to prolong Kirsten Rausing and Andrew Balding's season of seasons is Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten), whose G3 Albany S. win at Royal Ascot June 18 received a boost on Friday with the performances of Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in the G2 Rockfel S. She again had that pair behind when denying Desert Dreamer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the July 9 G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. on this surface at the July festival before going down by a length to Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) in York's G2 Lowther S. Aug. 19. Racing under a penalty there and giving away valuable ground at the start, the homebred comes into the rematch with confidence behind her. “She's done nothing wrong this year,” Balding commented. “It was probably too quick a test and the draw didn't work out as we'd have wanted at York. She doesn't have to carry a penalty in this and she seems in good form, so we're hoping she'll run well.”

Zain Claudette, who also nosed out Desert Dreamer in the G3 Princess Margaret Keeneland S. at Ascot July 24 prior to the Lowther, will be bidding to provide trainer Ismail Mohammed with a red-letter day and he said, “She has very good recovery and she is handling everything so well. It's the same fillies, it's only the Irish fillies that she hasn't beaten. In the end, we will see if she is the champion or not, but from my side I feel she is already a champion.”

Westerberg, Coolmore and Merribelle Stables's 'TDN Rising Star' Tenebrism (Caravaggio) has a tall task attempting to overcome a 181-day absence since her visually stunning debut success at Naas Mar. 28, but as the sole Ballydoyle representative warrants respect. “Obviously, things haven't been straightforward for her since then,” Ryan Moore said. “However, she's been doing things nicely at home and I'd be hopeful she'd run well but I do think it's a very strong Cheveley Park.” Another 'TDN Rising Star' Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) relished the switch to front-running tactics when winning the Aug. 30 Listed Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy and she is right in the mix on that form.

In the Middle Park, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's June 17 G2 Norfolk S. and Aug. 22 G1 Prix Morny hero Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) looks poised to continue his momentum with the stiff six certain to play to his strengths. Trainer Richard Fahey is confident. “Whatever beats him wins,” he said. “He's pretty smart and has a great mind. He does everything right at home and is easy to train. He goes fast easily which makes my job very easy in turn. I've got every piece of work into him that I needed to and feel he's still progressing. Like all the other good ones I've had, he's very straightforward.”

Perfect Power, who handled this good-to-firm ground when powering home at Royal Ascot and good-to-soft in the Morny at Deauville, may have one achilles heel according to his trainer. “My one concern for Saturday is the draw, I hate being in stall one on the straight course at Newmarket, it limits your options and things can happen away from you,” Fahey explained. “I just hope we're in the right place, because we have the right horse if we are.”

Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) had his June 26 G2 Railway S. conqueror Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) and the May 22 G3 Marble Hill S. winner Castle Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) behind when second to Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh Aug. 8. Judged by the way Ebro River performed in the G1 National S., that may be strongest piece of six-furlong juvenile form to date and the Ger Lyons trainee looks to have abundant improvement as a strong stayer at the trip.

“His work has always been impressive, but we've always trained him with next year in mind,” Lyons said. “I'm happy going into the Middle Park–I'm not saying he'll win it, but he'll be competitive. He's always showed quality. I would much rather be going over seven furlongs with him, but we are erring on the side of weakness at the moment. Colin [Keane] has always said 'stick to six with him for the moment'. I think it is the six furlongs that has been getting him beat up to now. Colin said he would reverse the form of the Railway S. and he was right, but then we bumped into one in the Phoenix. The Dewhurst is not out of the question. We'll see what happens on Saturday–he's had a light season and I can't wait to see him over seven.”

Go Bears Go, who was also second in the Norfolk before his Railway win and Phoenix third, is looking to bring up a notable double for Amo Racing and David Loughnane following the success of the combination's Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in Friday's G2 Rockfel S. “He's not let us down yet, so it's all systems go,” Loughnane commented. “He was my first runner in a Group 1 in the Phoenix when he was third and he's my only one. The winner franked the form in the National S., so we'll be going confident that he's a Group 1 horse. He seems in a great place. We gave him a little break for a freshen-up after the Phoenix and I couldn't be happier with him at the moment.”

From Ballydoyle is Smith, Magnier, Tabor, Westerberg and Sikura's progressive HMS Endeavour (War Front), who has fast ground in his favour in a race his trainer has won with 25-1 and 10-1 shots in the last 10 years. Considering the depth of experience in pattern-race company that his rivals boast here, the son of Lady Eli (Divine Park) has to progress markedly on his latest success in a five-furlong conditions race on Dundalk's Polytrack Sept. 17. “This looks a very competitive race,” jockey Ryan Moore admitted. “HMS Endeavour has been progressing with each start, but this is a step up in class and he'll have to improve to be in the mix here.”

On a card where only the Cambridgeshire and the closing handicap are not for juveniles, Classic clues are in abundance with the G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. seeing Mick and Janice Mariscotti's Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) tackle Godolphin's July Course debut winner Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Aug. 18 G3 Acomb S. scorer Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Beaten a short head by Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the G2 Superlative S. at the July festival July 10, Masekela has since denied Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in the Listed Washington Singer S. also over seven furlongs at Newbury Aug. 14 and both pieces of form have been subsequently boosted.

Oisin Murphy's enthusiasm for the Kingsclere runner was obvious on Friday. “Masekela is the one I'm looking forward to most this weekend in the Royal Lodge,” he said. “I've loved him since the first time I saw him and although he's a horse for next year, hopefully we can get one more run out of him as a 2-year-old. All the signs have been good at home, if anything he's got quite lazy, but a mile will suit him well. Royal Patronage brings strong form into the race, he'll probably go forward again and hopefully Masekela can follow them along and show them how good he is.”

Having a line on Masekela through Native Trail, Charlie Appleby is happy to pitch in Coroebus, whose Aug. 13 win over this trip has also been boosted. “Coroebus won his maiden in a raw style, but did it well and has come on for the run,” he said. “We have been pleased with him going into this and feel that he is ready to test himself in pattern company.”

Royal Patronage looks certain to improve for an extra furlong following his dominating York success from the front and Harry Herbert said, “He was impressive last time at York, I don't think there was any fluke about that and he's now put together two very good performances. He's improving rapidly, so we're hopeful that he'll give everyone a big shout on Saturday. If he's come on the same amount as he has been showing in all of his races then you'd have to hope he'd be right up the sharp end–we love the horse and it's great to hear he has been working impressively.”

In between the Cheveley Park and the Middle Park, The Curragh stages the G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. where the Westerberg-Coolmore-Ballydoyle alliance is represented by the July 14 Killarney conditions winner Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). He beat the re-opposing Tuwaiq (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) in convincing fashion there and that rival has since added substance to the form by finishing runner-up in the Listed Churchill S. at Tipperary Aug. 6, while Joseph O'Brien saddles the five-length Galway maiden scorer Swan Bay (Ire) (Australia {GB}) for the Lloyd J Williams Syndicate and said, “He's a horse that we always hoped would be stakes class and we are looking forward to seeing how he fits into this company.”
