Where Stars Entwine

Now that Europe is firmly enconced in autumn, Newmarket's Rowley Mile is the stage for some of the season's most revered 2-year-old encounters and Friday sees the G1 bet365 Fillies' Mile help sort out the pecking order in the female division.

Topping that category at present is Cheveley Park Stud's unbeaten Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was introduced on the July Course here June 26 before putting the re-opposing subsequent GI Natalma S. winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in her place in Sandown's Listed Star S. July 22 and following up in the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster Sept. 9. While that form is not out of the ordinary, the daughter of the G1 1000 Guineas runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk) has impressed Frankie Dettori with the style of her performances and he is quick to lavish praise on the Gosden representative.

Operating at a scarcely-believable 40% strike rate in worldwide Group and Grade I races this year, Frankie is looking for a seventh win in the race that gave him his second career top-level victory 31 years ago.

“I was really taken by her at Sandown. She won really well and I later rode the horse that finished second in that race, Wild Beauty, to win next time out in Canada so that is good form,” he said. “She has done nothing wrong so far and she is taking the usual progression after winning a Group 2 to have a go at a Group 1. She has got a great physique and lots of scope and she is not the finished article by any means. She is kind and talented and we expect her to progress over the winter. It is all positive stuff.”

It has been a while since Cheveley Park have had as hot a Guineas prospect to look forward to and managing director Chris Richardson is hoping Inspiral stays on track here. “She's done everything right so far and is a lovely filly,” he said. “She's working well, but this is a big step up and she'll be racing on some rain-softened ground which she hasn't encountered before. Her mother went on it and what will be will be. Dreams may be shattered, but we may have even bigger dreams for next year if all goes our way.”

Also unbeaten is Qatar Racing's G3 Prestige S. winner Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), who represents the St Mark's Basilica cross and who has impressed with the manner of her displays on debut at Haydock July 2 and in that Goodwood contest Aug. 28. In the Prestige, she had the May Hill runner-up Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) back in third and the subsequent G2 Rockfel S. winner Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in fourth and is within range of the favourite on that evidence. “I'm really looking forward to her,” Oisin Murphy said. “I think the world of Inspiral and she will probably be hard to beat, but Mise En Scene is a beautiful filly.”

Trainer James Ferguson added, “After Goodwood, the first thing Oisin said was that she needs a mile. She did a nice piece of work on the racecourse and she seemed to handle it fine. Oisin rode her very coolly at Goodwood and if he wanted to he could have got there quicker. He was aware he was going to get there and gave her a beautiful ride, but I think with another furlong she would have gone again.”

From Ireland are Zhang Yuesheng's Aug. 27 G3 Flame of Tara S. winner Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Sept. 26 G3 Weld Park S. scorer Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Jessica Harrington has waited with Magical Lagoon since that Curragh contest and arrives with a fresh filly. “I'm very excited about running her. She's a lovely filly,” she said. “I probably would have been more worried if the ground had been good-to-firm. She won at The Curragh and I think the ground that day was yielding. They've all got to run down that hill and keep themselves balanced, but she's a very well-balanced filly and she did run at Naas on debut which has a fair few ridges down the back and she seemed to cope with that well. She's a big filly and it's just taken a bit of time to get her into shape and her fitness up to the right level. Ultimately, I think she'll probably end up being a mile-and-a-half filly.”

Concert Hall is a daughter of Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and will be looking to provide Aidan O'Brien with a sixth renewal. “She's been improving with every run,” he said. “We always thought she'd stay further than a mile and she has seen the seven furlongs out really well in her last few races. She'll be happy that the ground is nice. That's in her favour.”

Despite being comprehensively beaten by Inspiral in the Star S. and finding Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}) a length too strong in the July Course's G3 Sweet Solera S. Aug. 7, Wild Beauty is the Charlie Appleby representative and it will be interesting to see whether her Canadian excursion will aid her cause here. “We were delighted to see Wild Beauty win a Grade I in Canada, when she improved for the step up to a mile,” he said. “She has taken that race well and goes into this with plenty of experience at a high level.”

Oh So Sharp Could Give Classic Pointers
Also on the card is the seven-furlong G3 Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp S., which is missing TDN Rising Star Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) but which has some Classic wannabes including Team Valor and Gary Barber's Sept. 2 G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. runner-up Pearl Glory (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) and Andrew Rosen's same-card Salisbury maiden winner Good American (GB) (American Pharoah). Pearl Glory's trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy is looking forward to stepping up his filly from six furlongs  and said, “She's been doing very well since the Dick Poole. The filly is in good form and it looked like she wanted a step up in trip last time out, so we are trying the seven furlongs this time. I think she will handle Newmarket fine, but she wouldn't want the ground to be too soft. I hope it dries a bit.”

Challenge In The Cards For Elders
Away from the juveniles, the G2 Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff Awards Challenge S. which used to be part of the old Champions Day at Newmarket offers the opportunity for some of the year's “nearly horses” in the seven-furlong category to shine. Of the Godolphin duo, William Buick has opted for the mercurial Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), whose four runs in Newmarket include a second in the 2019 G3 Autumn S. and a career-best six-length success on similar ground in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. last July.

“Al Suhail lacks a bit of consistency, but has taken each run well this year and if he produces his best form should be bang there,” Charlie Appleby said of the 4-year-old, whose opponents include Michael Pescod's G2 Champagne S. and G3 Greenham S. winner Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

New Arrangements For Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance In England

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has announced the implementation of key steps towards re-establishing on a long-term basis the essential equine infectious disease surveillance provision that had been performed by the Animal Health Trust (AHT) until its closure in July 2020.

Acting on the recommendations of an industry-wide committee set up to assess options for the future, HBLB has concluded an agreement from August 2021 with Rossdales Ltd to provide the diagnostic microbiology testing capacity, arrangements that will work in conjunction with the epidemiological surveillance and monitoring unit that will now be based at the University of Cambridge Veterinary School.

[Story Continues Below]

Since the closure of the AHT, the surveillance services have been provided by the former AHT team headed by Dr. Richard Newton on a temporary basis under contract to the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). This team will be employed by Cambridge University under the new agreement and will continue to respond to disease outbreak incidents and to produce daily updates on infectious disease reports worldwide for the benefit of the health of all horses, Thoroughbred and non-Thoroughbred.

Over the past year, diagnostics have been available to Dr. Newton's team on an ad hoc basis from Rossdales Ltd, and funded by HBLB. Full coverage has therefore been maintained, meaning that the team was able to respond promptly and effectively to any incidents of disease.

The new arrangements will span an interim period of at least two years while options for the longer term are considered and developed.

Funding will be provided, as previously, by HBLB, racehorse owners and the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA). Discussions are also being held with the sport and leisure horse interests regarding potential contributions in the future.

In addition, HBLB has formed a representative oversight committee, with HBLB Government Appointed Member Anne Lambert as its chair. The membership will include representatives from HBLB's Veterinary Advisory Committee, the TBA, the Racehorse Owners Association, the BHA and the non-Thoroughbred sport and leisure sectors. This committee will have responsibility for monitoring the service in its initial phase and for designing plans for future, with the paramount objective of safeguarding the national herd. Full engagement between the Thoroughbred and non-Thoroughbred sectors in respect of infectious disease management will underpin the work which includes the development of an epidemic risk management plan.

Alan Delmonte, Chief Executive of HBLB, said: “This is an important milestone in putting in place successor arrangements to the services that had been carried out by the Animal Health Trust for a long time. A full evaluation of the current situation and the equine sector's requirements took place including through a tender process that was announced by BHA in 2020. Substantial work has been done by Stephen Atkin, who was retained to act as project manager of this complex area that has taken many months to consider. As well as now engaging the widely recognized expertise of Rossdales, it will be welcomed that it has been possible to retain the previous AHT team headed by Dr. Richard Newton. All in the equine sector are grateful to them for continuing to provide disease monitoring coverage and reaction to outbreaks given the challenging circumstances of the past year.”

Dr. Alastair Foote, director of Rossdales Laboratories, added: “We are delighted to have been awarded the tender, and to be able to provide continuity of the former AHT services that were critical to the equine industry, maintaining essential diagnostic testing and surveillance work. Our recent major investment in new laboratory facilities at our Newmarket site has meant we have been able to rapidly accommodate the required testing requirements, with new tissue culture and virus isolation facilities, and we look forward to working alongside the surveillance and research team at Cambridge.”

Straight Answer Supplemented to Dewhurst

Undefeated Juddmonte homebred Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) has been supplemented to the Oct. 9 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket. His addition brings the potential field to 12, after winning at The Curragh when unveiled on Aug. 21 and the Listed Ballyhane Blenheim S. at Fairyhouse on Sept. 20. The Ger Lyons-trained colt will possibly face G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) for the Charlie Appleby/Godolphin axis, and Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere one-two Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) among others.

Juddmonte Racing Manager Barry Mahon said, “He's a big, scopey horse and took a bit of time to come to hand, but he's two from two and won nicely on his last start.

“While this is a very big ask, we just thought it was worth a go as it will further his education for next year to put him in Group 1 company.

“Part of the reason we supplemented was the weather forecast, it looks set fair and he's a horse that wants good ground. That would be our preference, so hopefully we don't get any nasty surprises with the weather.

“This is a big step from a listed at Fairyhouse to a Group 1 and it's his first try over seven furlongs, so there's a lot of variables, but we are excited to see if he can step up to that level.”

Son Of Shamardal Another Rising Star At Newmarket

Newmarket's Sun Chariot card was a breeding ground for emerging talent on Saturday, with the MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed EBF Maiden S. the scene of the arrival of another TDN Rising Star in Earle Mack's newcomer Cash (Ire) (Shamardal). Sent off at 8-1 for his debut in this mile contest, the grey broke slowly before being held up by Jamie Spencer in rear throughout the early stages. Threaded up the rail to enter contention approaching two out, he had three lengths to make up on the 11-8 favourite Al Nafir (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) there but produced a telling surge to cut back the deficit in just over a furlong. Overwhelming that full-brother to Ghaiyyath (Ire) with 150 yards remaining, the David Simcock-trained newcomer finished off strongly to deny the Godolphin blueblood a winning debut by 1 1/2 lengths as the 50-1 shot Laatansa (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) ended up a neck back in third.

“He is a big horse, but he did everything right today and he is a nice prospect for next year,” Simcock said. “The mare stayed a mile six and he's drifted through his work at home and has never got tired, which is a good sign for me. He is a big, strapping horse and he has sustained his run today. We don't get that many of that make of car, so it is nice to find one! If he got there today great, but if he didn't there then there was always going to be another day. It can make life harder when they win first time out and I don't think he will be doing anything else this season. He's a horse we like and is talented–we've found some nice 2-year-olds this year and ten furlongs will be the starting point for him next year.”

Spencer was impressed and said, “It's difficult to do what he did on this racecourse first time out–I wanted to get him in and to relax and heading to the two I thought he'd be fourth, but he took off and got to the front and idled. I'd ridden him in March before David bought him and loved him the first day I sat on him. I've ridden him a good bit at home and he's an exciting horse. David doesn't train them to peak first time out and he's a beautiful horse and very comfortable to ride–he skips over the ground. Sometimes the dip here can feel like a roller-coaster, but on him it felt comfortable and generally a good horse gets in and out of the dip easily here. He should stay at least 10 furlongs next year and if he stays a mile and a half it puts him in another stratosphere. I've been looking forward to him running for a month now and told my agent that wherever Cash runs I'm going there to ride him.”

Cash, who is the 12th Shamardal to attain TDN Rising Star status, is out of Lady Rosamunde (GB) (Maria's Mon) who was a useful handicap winner over 14 furlongs. She is a daughter of the Listed Prix de Thiberville winner and G3 Lancashire Oaks runner-up String Quartet (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and is therefore a half to the G2 Park Hill S. scorer Meeznah (Dynaformer), who was disqualified after finishing a neck second to Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) in the 2010 G1 Epsom Oaks. Also a half to the G2 Princess of Wales's S. runner-up Shahin (Kingmambo), String Quartet is the second dam of this year's G1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Under Your Spell (SAf) (Capetown Noir {SAf}). This is also the family of the GI Canadian International heroine Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Lady Rosamunde has a yearling full-sister to Cash and a colt foal by Exceed and Excel (Aus) to follow.
