Frankel’s Mostahdaf Stars In The Darley

It may have been Godolphin's day up to the nine-furlong G3 Darley S., but the closer of Future Champions Day at Newmarket belonged to Shadwell's exciting prospect Mostahdaf (GB) (Frankel {GB}) as he rewarded the patience of connections with this career-best. Beaten only once so far when meeting trouble in running in 12th in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 15, the homebred half-brother to Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) had shown the benefit of a subsequent break when returning with a success in Sandown's Listed Fortune S. over a mile on soft ground Sept. 15. Always travelling within himself just off the pace on the wing throughout the early stages, the 3-1 second favourite was committed by Jim Crowley on the front end with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Readily asserting from there, the homebred kept the course-and-distance Cambridgeshire H. winner Bedouin's Story (GB) (Farhh {GB}) comfortably at bay to score by 1 3/4 lengths. “He's done nothing wrong during his career. He was boxed in when he ran in the St James's Palace Stakes and never got a run, so that was the end of that,” John Gosden said. “His best trip is a mile and a quarter–we've always thought that–and I was going to run him in the Champion Stakes at Ascot next week, but I was overruled and that's why we ran here.”

Introduced over seven furlongs on Newcastle's Tapeta Mar. 16, Mostahdaf followed an easy win there with a defeat of well-regarded peers including the subsequent Listed Dee S. winner El Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in a mile conditions race on Kempton's Polytrack Apr. 5 which used to be known as the Easter S. when carrying listed status. After earning his Royal tilt in the Listed Heron S. at Sandown May 20, he was badly interfered with when launching his challenge two out and lost all chance as Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) cut loose. His reappearance in the Fortune showed he had gone the right way since that reversal and this display was even smoother despite taking on proven older horses with more experience. “He's a classy horse and probably a horse for next year, but we will have a look at the race in Bahrain [the International Trophy],” Gosden Sr added. We'll have a talk about that with connections. He would go on good-to-firm and good-to-soft, he just wouldn't want it firm. Nazeef did exceptionally well as a four year old. She went from a Chelmsford handicap to winning two group 1s at four and not many do that. You do look at the family trait.”

Mostahdaf's aforementioned half-sister Nazeef improved with age and experience and annexed last year's G1 Falmouth S., G1 Sun Chariot S. and G2 Duke of Cambridge S., so the future looks bright for the latest progeny of Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to fly the flag of the Listed Garnet S. winner. She is kin to the GII San Gabriel S. winner and GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile-placed Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and his full-brother Euginio (Ire) who also took this prize in 2018 only to be disqualified due to a positive sample for a prohibited substance. The third dam Star (GB) (Most Welcome {GB}) produced the G1 July Cup-winning sire Pastoral Pursuits (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and his G1 Haydock Sprint Cup-winning full-brother Goodricke (GB). Handassa's yearling colt is by Dark Angel (Ire), while she also has a 2021 full-brother to Mostahdaf.

Oasis Dream’s Native Trail Completes The Bluewash In The Dewhurst

By the time the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. loomed on Saturday, there was a keen sense of inevitability to the outcome and Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) kept to the script to complete Godolphin and Charlie Appleby's rout of Newmarket's Future Champions Day card. Already the keeper of the generation's bragging rights having collected the G2 Superlative S. at the July Festival here and the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. at The Curragh Sept. 12, the bay had one more mission to complete and did so with his now-customary professionalism to take an unbeaten record into the off-season. Settled in behind the TDN Rising Stars Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) and Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) throughout the early stages by William Buick, the 5-6 favourite was in a pocket with the field having congregated against the stand's rail. Needing his usual niggling to prepare for engagement three out, he responded to hunt down the keen-going Dubawi Legend heading downhill and overhauled that rival 150 yards from the post. Dubawi Legend stuck at it to ultimately be beaten just two lengths, as Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) stayed on to be half a length away in third. “It was a messy pace and messy race and we ended up on the stand's rail, but wherever I asked him to go he went and he hit the rising ground really well,” Buick said. “It's nice to back up his National Stakes win in the Dewhurst, which is the most important 2-year-old race and I think he'll be just as effective or more so over a mile next year. He wouldn't look out of place in a 3-year-old race now–you want to see how he comes out of these races, he's a real man you know.”

With the benefit of hindsight, Native Trail's debut performance at Sandown June 11 looks even stronger now that the four-length runner-up Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has gone on to beat some of this card's leading protagonists in both the G2 Royal Lodge S. and G3 Acomb S. Upstaging Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) in a tight finish to the Superlative, Godolphin's top dog gunned down Ballydoyle's unbeaten TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the National to take on extra gravitas and may not have needed to fully repeat that form to double his group 1 tally here. “He's a gorgeous horse with tonnes of ability,” Buick added. “You wouldn't have expected them to come stand's side, but I did anticipate a tactical race and knew he would pick up once he got daylight. He's deservedly champion 2-year-old and could be absolutely anything. He minds himself at home and brings it on in the afternoon.”

What will emerge from elsewhere to challenge his pre-eminence in the 2000 Guineas next spring is unknown at this stage, but it could be that despite his impeccable credentials Native Trail is not even the best 2-year-old in his own stable. Debates will rage throughout the winter as to whether the preceding G3 Autumn S. winner Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the better of the pair, but for now Native Trail has the big title belts all to himself. “Had he not won the National Stakes in similar fashion, I would probably have been a bit twitchy passing halfway but knowing how this horse operates I was comfortable enough,” Appleby said. “He wasn't doing a stroke and was just going through the motions. One thing is for sure, he was not going to stop galloping once he got going and the way he accelerated there when really given the office was quite remarkable.”

“I can't see him getting any further than a mile personally, but he's an exciting Guineas horse along with Coroebus,” the Moulton Paddocks handler added. “His work at home prior to the National Stakes, you wouldn't be getting too excited but he's that sort of horse, he warms into a race and does it all the right way round and that's what we saw again today. There's a lot more to come, you'd like to say, but he is unbeaten with two group 1s. I'm not going to get too carried away. He's a big boy, 540 kilos, and came in at that weight from the breeze-ups. Full credit to the team who purchased him and Norman Williamson who consigned him. Since then, Norman has taken a keen interest.”

“Norman said after the National Stakes he still didn't know what he was doing and he was correct, because his work at home wasn't too exciting but he warms into a race and does it the right way round. I've never put him anywhere near Coroebus at home–they are different types. Coroebus travels very well and has a smart turn of foot, whereas this horse does things in a different manner.”

As Appleby stated, Native Trail was a 210,000gns Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up graduate and is the first runner for the unraced Juddmonte cast-off Needleleaf (GB) (Observatory) who was bought by the MAB Agency for just 60,000gns at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a full-sister to the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine African Rose (GB) and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Helleborine (GB), with the former producing the G3 Princess Margaret S. winner Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Helleborine responsible for the G2 Coventry S.-winning sire Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

The second dam New Orchid (Quest For Fame {GB}), who was third in the G3 Lancashire Oaks, is a daughter of Musicanti (Nijinsky II) who also produced the 1999 Dewhurst hero and sire Distant Music from a mating with Observatory's sire Distant View. Musicanti is kin to the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, GI Washington D.C. International and GI Suburban H.-winning champion Vanlandingham (Cox's Ridge) and to the dams of the GII Keeneland Turf Mile and G2 Prix Eugene Adam-winning sire Kirkwall (GB) (Selkirk) and to the GI American Oaks heroine Funny Moon (Malibu Moon). From the family of the GI Belmont S. hero and sire Temperence Hill, Needleleaf's yearling filly by Calyx's sire Kingman was bought by Godolphin for €950,000 at the Arqana Deauville August Sale. She also has a filly foal by Siyouni (Fr).

Godolphin’s Clean Sweep On The Cards As Coroebus Scores

With Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) having provided the warm-up act in the G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S., the impressive Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) duly extended the domination of Godolphin's Charlie Appleby stable on Future Champions Day in the G3 Emirates Autumn S. Caught close home having shown above-average acceleration in the G2 Royal Lodge S. over this course and mile trip last time Sept. 25, the imposing homebred was in last from the break this time with the anchor down. Despite racing away from the pace throughout, the 4-5 favourite tanked to the front with William Buick unable to contain him any longer 1 1/2 furlongs out and from there he was in a class of his own en route to a two-length success from Imperial Fighter (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}), with Dubai Poet (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) 2 1/2 lengths away in third. “The last day, he surprised me how fast he picked up and we were aware of that today and rode him accordingly,” Buick explained. “I didn't think they went very quick and expected the dash to be on three down and it was, but there was nothing there to take me and again he got a bit lonely in front. He can really turn it on and horses like that can't sustain their run for very long, but you can sit on him until the last furlong and a half and he showed that today. He cruised down the dip and when I pressed the button it was all over. He's a lovely big horse and he'll come back better and stronger after the winter.”

Coroebus, who was off the mark on his only other start over this trip on the July Course Aug. 13, is to join the day's G1 Darley Dewhurst S. hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the mile Classic here next May in what promises to be a fascinating encounter. “William was very disappointed after the Royal Lodge, but you can blame me as I told him to get him rolling into the dip on that fast ground and so he got racing a bit sooner than he wanted,” Appleby said. “He had always impressed us at home and he travelled for fun that day–I wasn't disappointed, as it's all about the group 1s and if they get beat on the way so be it. William said he came too good again today, but there was always going to be a time to press the button and he's a different animal now. He was a big raw baby in the Royal Lodge, but he's more the finished article today.”

Intriguingly, his trainer was effusive about Coroebus even after Native Trail had garnered the day's feature and added, “They are two nice colts and to have these results in half an hour is what it's all about,” he added. “They are both big colts and one could do better physically than the other over the winter and need a trial more, while one could get more athletic in that time and go straight there, it's too hard to say now. It's a long way off, but I do like Coroebus. He's a supreme traveller and although you cannot fault what Native Trail has done, you've got to be able to travel in a Guineas and what Coroebus does have is a high cruising speed. You'll never take him off the bridle before the two-pole.”

“He's a horse who has always been exciting–even in the spring he was doing stuff he shouldn't have been doing for the size of him. I could have run him in May if I'd wanted to,” Appleby continued. We'll put him away for the winter and look forward to the spring. It doesn't worry me if he doesn't have a Guineas trial, but I'd imagine we will probably just to give him that edge going into it. He wouldn't want much further than a mile. If anything, when he strengthens up he'll get quicker.”

Coroebus is the second foal out of the G3 Oh So Sharp S. scorer First Victory (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who is one of five black-type winners out of the top producer Eastern Joy (GB) (Dubai Destination). They include the four-times group 1 and grade I-winning Godolphin flagbearer Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}), the G2 May Hill S. winner and G1 1000 Guineas-placed Ihtimal (Ire) (Shamardal) and Always Smile (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who was runner-up in the G1 Sun Chariot S. and third in the G1 Falmouth S. The third dam is the G2 Sun Chariot S. winner Red Slippers (Nureyev), a full-sister to the G2 Jockey Club S. winner and G1 Epsom Derby-placed Romanov (Ire) and a half to the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Balanchine (Storm Bird) who was responsible for the G1 Prix de Diane heroine West Wind (GB) (Machiavellian). Dubawi’s Goldspur Wins The Zetland

Labelled a TDN Rising Star on his winning debut at Sandown Sept. 15, Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) got Godolphin and Charlie Appleby's Future Champions Day at Newmarket off to a flyer on Saturday as he mastered Unconquerable (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) and stablemate Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in a thrilling finale to the 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. Unable to gain extra experience following his debut 6 1/2-length romp when withdrawn from Epsom's Cazoo Derby “Wild Card” EBF Conditions S. after becoming upset in the stalls, Goldspur put that behind him here to travel sweetly for James Doyle away from the 6-4 favourite Hafit as the pair led the way. With Unconquerable joining in two out, they were in line with the lead swapped between them but near the line it was the 5-2 second favourite who gave extra to beat the Irish challenger by a head, with Hafit only a short head behind. “It felt as if he had improved since Sandown and there was no real second to him that day, but that form had taken a couple of knocks since and he'd had that minor mishap at Epsom in between,” the winning rider said. “Today, he was foot-perfect and travelled really well–those other horses had the advantage of experience over him and probably ran straighter down into the 'dip', so to finish off best is pleasing.”

Doyle revealed that Goldspur had been hard for Charlie Appleby and William Buick to weigh up at home. “He's been difficult to assess and when they galloped together Hafit was far better. Charlie didn't expect what he did at Sandown, as he hadn't shown that at home but that's not a bad way to be. For a big fellow, he's going to be versatile I think regards to the ground. It's still a little bit dead here, but he's a good mover. He actually travelled best of the three, but wobbled under pressure in the dip and then got going again when he met the rising ground. He's a big relentless galloper who clearly sleeps at home.”

Appleby added, “Full credit to Jerry and Tom and the team back at home; they've done a great job with this horse. He's a nice homebred with a nice staying page. He's only come of late and it's all about next year with him. We'll start off with some of the trials in the spring maybe. I think that he could make up into a Derby horse, as he has definitely got the page for it and he has done nothing wrong at the moment apart from one little blip which has been ironed out.”
Donnacha O'Brien said of the runner-up, who was advertising the form of the Sept. 25 G2 Royal Lodge S. in which he was third last time, “He ran a cracker and is still learning. He's a big horse and there is a bit of improvement in him as well. We could look at the 10-furlong race in France [the Oct. 23 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud] next time–it didn't look like he was stopping there and he's a big tough horse who is clear-winded so usually when they have those qualities they go on any ground.”

Goldspur is the fourth foal out of the talented G2 Lanchashire Oaks and G3 Prix Minerve winner Pomology (Arch), who was also runner-up in the G1 Prix Vermeille. She is kin to the Listed Garrowby S. winner Tommy Taylor (Mizzen Mast) and the GI Just a Game S. and GI American Oaks runner-up Sassy Little Lila (Artie Schiller). This is also the family of the GI Turf Classic Invitational-winning sire Apple Tree (Fr) and the G3 Prix de Royaumont runner-up American Apples (Fr) (American Post {GB}).
