Malavath Camp Opts For English 1000 Guineas Over French Equivalent

After a pair of defections, one the high-profile Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday week is the confirmed next target for Group 2 winner Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Tweenhills Stud's David Redvers co-owns the filly under the Everest Racing banner and said, “She is on course for the 1000 Guineas, although it is a nervous week running up to it. If there was any doubt about running at Newmarket before, the Inspiral news would have dispelled it completely.

“She won the Prix Imprudence, which is the French Guineas trial, and according to her trainer she has come on significantly for that run, is in the peak of health and we just hope she can spend this last week incident-free and arrive at Newmarket in the form she is currently in at home.”

A progressive type that has never been off the board in six starts, Malavath won a Chantilly conditions heat in September before a score in the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte one month later. Shipped to California for Del Mar's Breeders' Cup meeting, the Francis-Henri Graffard charge was only a half-length behind Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 5. She resumed with a 1 1/2-length tally in the Prix Imprudence on Apr. 7.

“She won the Prix Impudence on heavy ground, there is no getting away from that, but she also ran in the Breeders' Cup on fast ground,” he added. “We always felt she would be inconvenienced by heavy ground and we were very worried about running her before that in the Criterium de Maison-Laffitte in very soft ground [which she won].

“One of the things that makes her particularly interesting is she seems to have an extraordinary ability to handle any conditions and a temperament that most trainers would die for.”

“The Breeders' Cup was firm ground, although it is a very different thing running on the Rowley Mile to running round a bend at Del Mar,” he said. “There are pedigree question marks surrounding the sire rather than anything else. But she is one of the few with a genuinely steep climb in her form figures and she seems to have improved again.

“Francis is extremely positive about her chance and never questioned running at Newmarket. I thought the obvious bet would be to go to the [G1] Poule d'Essai des Pouliches [on May 15], but he has always been adamant that this is where she is coming–he thinks she is as good as there is, and wants to prove it.”

Group 1 Winner Inspiral To Miss The 1000 Guineas

Cheveley Park Stud's Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), one of the leading fancies for the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 1, will miss the race, according to the owners' managing director Chris Richardson. The John and Thady Gosden trainee is a perfect four-for-four, with black-type victories in the Listed Star S. in June, the Sept. 9 G2 May Hill S. and the Oct. 8 G1 Fillies' Mile to end her season.

“John Gosden had an in-depth discussion with the boss, Mrs. Thompson, and following that, it was decided that, sadly, she would miss the 1000 Guineas,” Richardson said on Sunday.

“John Gosden feels she wasn't really ready for the race and when you receive that advice from a trainer such as John, you follow it and now we'll look to the [G1] Coronation S. at Royal Ascot [on June 17] as part of her programme.

“It is disappointing for all concerned, but we must heed their advice. Royal Ascot is a favoured meeting of the Thompsons and we've had success there previously, it's the start of the year and we've still got lots of opportunities going forward.”

Also out of the 1000 Guineas is Saeed Al Tayer's Group 2 heroine Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never). A winner at second asking, the chestnut ran out a narrow victress of the G3 Princess Margaret S. at Royal Ascot last June. Sent to York for her next outing in August, she stalked and pounced to win the G2 Lowther S. by a measured length, prior to an unplaced run in the wake of likely Guineas favourite Tenebrism (Caravaggio) in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket.

“We've brought her back to training and she is very well, she had some very good races last year,” said trainer Ismail Mohammed. “She is not going to the Guineas, we've pulled her out. We will have so many options for her, so we will see where to go with her.

“It could be Royal Ascot, there are many races for her. I want to find at least one good race for her over seven furlongs before we go for a mile.”

Eydon Camp Mulls 2000 Guineas Option

The Listed bet365 Feilden S. hero Eydon (Ire) (Olden Times {GB}), emerged from his win in good order and is still under consideration for the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas, owner Prince Faisal's racing advisor Ted Voute revealed on Wednesday. Although the Roger Varian trainee has been left in the entries for that Newmarket Classic, his long-term target remains the G1 Cazoo Derby at Epsom on June 4.

“I went to see him on Monday and he looked magnificent, so I relayed that information to the Prince, who is still in Saudi Arabia and after discussions with Roger as well, we have left him in the Guineas for the time being to keep all the options open,” said Voute.

“The Prince has said the best trial for the Derby is the Guineas, so that is definitely on our mind, but it's just the timing from the Feilden to the Guineas is the shortest of all the options we have, so that's really why we're sitting and deliberating.

“Going down to Newmarket myself and having a look at him was one of the pieces of the puzzle, which I fed back into the system and as a result we've left him in. Sometimes you're forced to make decisions before you want to make them, but by leaving him in the race it buys us a week.”

He added: “Obviously, we've got the likes of Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and some very good horses to face up to, but you don't become the best unless you race against them and the Prince has never been shy, he likes to race them at the top table if they are good enough.

“He's 25-1 for the Guineas and I wonder if he was by Frankel (GB) out of an Olden Times mare he would be shorter in the betting, but he's by Olden Times out of a Frankel mare so he's 25s.

“He won the Feilden very nicely and he could be anything, but we've not ruled anything out and he was put in the [G2] Dante [S.] and all the right races in both England and France.”

Perfect Power Will Go To The Guineas

Dual Group 1 winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) has exited his victory in the G3 Greenham S. well and will contest the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Apr. 30. Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's colt will be trying the one-mile distance for the first time in the first colts' Classic of the season.

“He's come out of Newbury remarkably well,” Perfect Power's trainer Richard Fahey told www.sportinglife.com. “He had a light canter this morning and just in himself he's bouncing. He's tightened up.

“I did feel there was improvement in him going into the Greenham. The last thing I wanted to do was have him 100%. It was a trial and I used it as a trial to see if there was a possibility of having a crack at the Guineas.

“It's just put him right. His demeanour is right, he came off the gallop having a jig-jog and a squeal which is where you want these racehorses to be. You want them to be happy and at the moment he's in a good place.

“As a trainer, when you have a dual Group 1-winning 2-year-old the question is have they trained on? That was the big question for me–is he just a wonder 2-year-old or is he going to mature into a better horse and I think it was one of his best performances–if not his best–at Newbury, knowing in the back of my mind it would put him right.

“It put him spot on for the Guineas. We can keep him ticking over and one blow-out and we're there. We're going to have a go at the Guineas. I've spoken to the team, I've spoken to Sheikh Rashid and we've nothing to lose by having a go.”

Perfect Power showcased his talent with a gritty win in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot and added the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville in August, two starts on. He made it consecutive Group 1s with a half-length score in the G1 Middle Park S. over the Rowley Mile at the end of September and came off a 203-day break to take the Greenham. It was his first start beyond six furlongs.

He added, “He wasn't stopping in the Greenham, he galloped all the way through the line and took some pulling up. I think he'll be a better horse on Guineas day.

“I'm very excited about him. We know he handles the course, goes on any ground and is becoming a legend.”
