Chaldean One Of A Score Of Colts In Guineas At Latest Entry Stage

Despite losing Frankie Dettori once the gates flew in the G3 Greenham S. on Saturday, Juddmonte's Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) remains part of the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas field. After Tuesday's latest scratching stage, 20 colts are still entered in the first Classic of the British season on Saturday, May 6.

A winner of four of his six starts, the G1 Dewhurst S. hero is one of two in the one-mile race for Andrew Balding. Second in the Dewhurst, G2 Richmond S. scorer Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) will attempt to turn the tables for Mrs. Fitri Hay and trainers Paul and Oliver Cole.

Ahmad Al Shaikh's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) remains in the race for Charlie Johnston, as do the Godolphin/Charlie Appleby pair of G2 Gimcrack S. winner Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf runner-up Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

The Coolmore partners and Aidan O'Brien field a quintet led by Group 1 scorers Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never). G3 Killavullan S. hero Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road) is also signed on, as is G3 2000 Guineas Trial S. winner Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Third behind Auguste Rodin and Tuesday's Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions Blue Riband Trial hero Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) is one of three in the race for Karl Burke. Burke runner Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the G3 Craven S. over the course-and-distance of the Guineas, will also take part. Group winners Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) hail from the stable of Roger Varian.

There is also still a chance of a royal runner, as the King and Queen Consort's two-for-two Slipofthepen (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) has also retained his entry for John and Thady Gosden.

In the fillies' equivalent on Sunday, May 7, 26 nominees have stood their ground, among them Group 1 winners Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), and Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) for trainers Ralph Beckett, Aidan O'Brien, and Dermot Weld, respectively.

Beckett has also entered G3 Fred Darling S. heroine Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}), while Hugo Palmer trains the runner-up in Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}). Juddmonte's Juliet Siera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), a Group 3 winner, is also part of Beckett's Guineas challenge.

The first and second-place finishers from the G3 Nell Gwyn S. also have entries in Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) for Richard Hannon and Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby. Saeed bin Suroor's G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. heroine and G1 Cheveley Park S. third Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) has been entered. G2 May Hill S. heroine Polly Pott (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) for trainer Ben Pauling is also part of the fray.

O'Brien is double-fisted in the Guineas, as his G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. victress Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) defeated Kieran Cotter's Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by 2 1/2 lengths at Leopardstown earlier this month.

Kodiac’s Indestructible Continues Amo’s Flying Start In The Craven

Beaten twice by Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at two but evidently unbowed, the aptly-named Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Shareva {Ire}, by Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) marked his debut for the Karl Burke stable with a win in Newmarket's G3 Craven S. to continue Amo Racing's strong start to the current campaign on Thursday. Able to get into some kind of fight with Andrew Balding's leading 2000 Guineas hope in York's G3 Acomb S., he was put in his place when last seen in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster in September but re-emerged to underline the strength of that peer and further his own case for the imminent course-and-distance Classic.

Keen early for Kevin Stott, the 8-1 shot who was trained by Michael O'Callaghan as a juvenile pulled his way to the front after the first two furlongs with another Balding runner in The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) tracking his every move away from the remainder. Tackled by that G2 Royal Lodge S. winner heading towards the dip, the bay pulled out more to gain the upper hand in the last 150 yards and score by 1 1/4 lengths, with Dancing Magic (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) 1 3/4 lengths further behind in third and Godolphin's 15-8 favourite Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) a disappointing last of the seven.

“This is a lovely, scopey horse,” Burke said. “I got a phone call just before Christmas asking if we'd take him and I'm not going to turn down horses like him. We had a couple of niggles with him physically after he arrived, nothing major, but because of those niggles I'm sure he's having a good blow today and he'll improve. I'd say I'd have to fight Kia [Joorabchian] now not to come back here in two weeks' time. He deserves his chance, I'm sure.”

King Power's racing manager Alistair Donald said of The Foxes, “This was always going to be a prep for the Dante and the Derby is the main focus. Today he's travelled great, looked like he was going to win the race and just got tired. I think he was a bit lonely out in front there as well. It's quite exciting and we're perfectly on track for the plan.”

Indestructible's dam Shareva was a fairly fast maiden herself, although her Aga Khan family offers the usual element of stamina to complement the speed influence of Kodiac. She is a daughter of Shareen (Ire) (Bahri), who was successful in the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies S. before producing the dual G2 Blandford S. scorer Shamreen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who is in turn the dam of last year's G2 Railway S. winner and G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Phoenix S. third Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Shareva, who is also a half to the G3 Singspiel S. scorer Shahroze (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), has a 2-year-old full-sister to the winner who was sold for 320,000gns to Cheveley Park Stud at the Book 2 Sale and is now named Summit (Ire), while her yearling filly is by Ghaiyyath (Ire).

Another Shadwell Star To Shine In the Craven?

There is no doubt that, in general, Newmarket's G3 Craven S. has lost much of its former relevance as a 2000 Guineas trial, but in the last two years it has enjoyed a revival with winners Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) going close in the mile Classic. Godolphin and Charlie Appleby have another leading man this time in the GI Summer S. and G3 Prix Francois Boutin scorer Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), but the one that really catches the eye is Shadwell's Kempton novice winner Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). A half-brother to the G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire) and four-time group winner Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the John and Thady Gosden-trained grey is tested earlier than that pair with extra precocity from the sire.

“They've all been happy with him at home, so with the season starting we need to know where we are with him,” Angus Gold said. “He's still entered in the Guineas and I'm imagining that will come too quick for him, but let's see how we get on Thursday. He's the least experienced in the field and it will tell us a lot more in terms of his class and the track and all those things. It's a learning curve.”

The Case For Chaldean…

He may not be running until Saturday, but Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is indirectly involved in the Craven with Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) just half a length behind Juddmonte's leading 2000 Guineas contender in York's G3 Acomb S. and 3 1/2 lengths in arrears in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster, where Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was behind. Now with Karl Burke, Amo Racing's big Guineas hope is up to a mile for the first time and racing and operations manager Tom Pennington believes that will see improvement.

“His pedigree suggests he will get a mile and he got seven furlongs well last year as a two-year-old,” he said. “The form is there. He has to make the improvement from two to three, but he definitely has the scope to do that and the form is in the book so he will be a nice three-year-old going forward hopefully.”

King Power's course-and-distance G2 Royal Lodge S. winner The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) will provide Chaldean's trainer Andrew Balding with more of an idea where he stands ahead of the May 6 Classic, while Isa Salman Al Khalifa's G3 Horris Hill S. third Ancestral Land (GB) (Sioux Nation) can not be left out of equations.

“His whole demeanour gives us the impression he will get a mile and we hope that will be possible,” trainer Clive Cox said. “I trained his dam to win over five furlongs, but he is a horse that has done exceptionally well physically and he hit the line well over seven last year.”

Adayar and Native Trail Delight Appleby in Racecourse Spin

NEWMARKET, UK–On Tuesday, Charlie Appleby gave us one Classic winner in action on the Rowley Mile, and by Wednesday that had doubled in number as his older-horse brigade continue the countdown to their seasonal debuts.

With Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) having pleased the trainer on Tuesday, last season's Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the 2021 Derby winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) stepped out on the turf which is drying all the time in the windy conditions.

“I'm very happy with both of them and thanks to Newmarket for letting us use the racecourse,” said Appleby after watching first Native Trail and James Doyle then Adayar and William Buick complete a straightforward piece of work over six furlongs, each in the company of a lead horse.

“I'm pleased I brought him up here,” he added of Adayar. “You can't beat getting them up here and having a racecourse gallop. With these older horses, they get a year older and a year wiser, so at home they can be a little more complacent. Will was happy with him. He picked up well. We weren't asking him for strong work because we're only ten days off a run now.”

That first engagement on April 28 is the G3 Gordon Richards S. at Sandown, a race which the trainer hopes will be a “stepping stone” to the G1 Prince of Wales's S.

Royal Ascot is also on the horizon for Native Trail, who was runner-up to his ill-fated stable-mate Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Guineas last May before his Irish Classic success. Subsequent increases to 10 furlongs for the Eclipse and the Juddmonte International saw his stamina tested. 

“Native Trail showed his usual enthusiasm,” said Appleby after the morning's gallop. “One thing we learnt at the back end of his three-year-old career was that he is not a mile-and-a-quarter horse. He's a miler, and the plan is to go to the Paradise Stakes at Ascot and use that as a prep for the Queen Anne, all being well.”

Adayar and William Buick

Now four and five respectively, Native Trail and Adayar are at the vanguard of an exciting team of older horses for Godolphin this season.

“It's one thing our operation has been doing over the years, thankfully, keeping these horses in training,” Appleby said.

His former stable star Blue Point (Ire), who notably won two Group 1 sprints in the same week at Royal Ascot, raced until he was five, and the son of Shamardal has put down an early marker in the contest to be this year's champion first-season sire. His third winner, Blue Storm (Ire), came on the opening day of the Craven meeting for James Tate.

“He's three from four now,” Appleby noted. “I'm hoping to bring one by him out at the Guineas meeting.”
