Dubawi’s Master of the Seas Best In The Earl of Sefton

Godolphin's G1 2000 Guineas second Master of the Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) had been gelded since finishing seventh in Ascot's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. last term and remained on target for Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Anne S. with a snug victory in Tuesday's G3 bet365 Earl of Sefton S. tackling nine furlongs at Newmarket. The 5-4 favourite, who annexed the 2020 G2 Superlative S. and this meeting's G3 Craven S. last year, was positioned in a handy fourth after a slick getaway. Inching closer once leaving the half-mile pole behind, he loomed large at the quarter-mile marker and was ridden out once gaining a narrow advantage entering the final furlong to account for Anthony Oppenheimer's G2 Dante S. runner-up and G3 Sovereign S. victor Megallan (GB) (Kingman {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths in ultimately comfortable fashion.

“He has been a touch frustrating, but it is great to get him back today,” said Charlie Appleby after overseeing the 4-year-old's third win at this venue. “He was the class horse of the race and nine furlongs I felt was well within him. He always runs well here, first and foremost, and got caught flat footed when he ran [third] against Benbatl [in September's G2 Joel S.]. I thought this step up would suit him and, at the two pole, I was just hoping he would get that gap. William [Buick] thinks bringing him back to a mile is his gig as much as I felt the one mile one [furlong] would suit him. I was just pleased to see the horse get his head back in front and that will do his confidence good. If you asked me what race I'd like to work back from it would be the [G1] Queen Anne [at Royal Ascot] as he stays nine furlongs and that is a stiff mile there. We all know Ascot is an important part of our calendar and, in our team, he is a big player.”

Master of the Seas is the 10th of 12 foals and one of eight scorers produced by stakes-winning G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Firth of Lorne (Ire) (Danehill). The March-foaled homebred bay is kin to a 2-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire) and to stakes-winning G1 St James's Palace S. runner-up Latharnach (Iffraaj {GB}), G3 UAE Oaks victrix Falls of Lora (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}), the stakes-winning Etive (Elusive Quality) and Listed Navigation S. third Tipstaff (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}). Falls of Lora, in turn, is the dam of GI Summer S. hero Albahr (Dubawi {Ire}) and MG1SP G3 Doncaster Prelude winner Cascadian (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). The winner's dam Firth of Lorne is a daughter of GSW G1 1000 Guineas second Kerrera (Ire) (Diesis {GB}), who is a half-sister to MG1SP sire Rock City (Ire) (Ballad Rock {Ire}) and whose descendants include G1 Prix Jean Prat placegetter and G2 German 2000 Guineas-winning sire Pacino (GB) (Zafonic) and G2 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) and German 2000 Guineas hero Dupont (GB) (Zafonic).

Lope de Vega’s New Science Strikes For Newmarket Success

Charlie Appleby trainee New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who ran seventh in Royal Ascot's Listed Chesham S., followed up a first black-type win in July's Listed Pat Eddery S. with a fourth in ParisLongchamp's Sept. 5 G3 Prix La Rochette and lined up match fit for Tuesday's Listed bet365 European Free H. coming back off a third in Meydan's Feb. 4 Listed Jumeirah Classic. Godolphin's €260,000 Arqana Select yearling was steadied to race in fourth after the break and remained there through halfway. Looming large at the quarter-mile marker, he was shaken up for control approaching the final furlong and was ridden out on the climb to the line to assert by 1 1/4 lengths from G3 Horris Hill S. third Tacarib Bay (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) for a second stakes triumph.

“We were disappointed in Meydan when he got beat, but we have been there before and were confident he would come forward and he has,” commented Charlie Appleby. “He is a set model and has got some good 2-year-old form which, thankfully, he has brought to the table this afternoon. I was pleased with his homework, Paul Eddery rides him at home, and I have to give credit to the team as he has very shallow feet and had very poor growth on them. He has been back here the last two weeks and we were confident that run in Dubai brought him forward coming into today.” Looking ahead to the possibility of skipping the track's G1 2000 Guineas at the beginning of next month, the trainer added, “I'm not going to be bold and say he will see out a mile as he has shown a lot of pace there. Personally, I think he is a tailor-made [Royal Ascot G3] Jersey horse.”

New Science is the fourth of five foals and one of two scorers produced by G2 Park Hill S. and G3 Lillie Langtry S. placegetter Alta Lilea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dual stakes-placed Mistress Quickly (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Listed Feilden S. runner-up Fighter Boy (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to a 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB). Descendants of his G2 Prix de l'Opera-winning third dam Mona Stella (Nureyev), herself kin to MG1SW G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dancing Maid (Fr) (Lyphard), include G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Special Quest (Fr) (Rainbow Quest).

Frankel’s Inspiral Remains Perfect After Fillies’ Mile Triumph

Cheveley Park Stud's undefeated 2-year-old filly Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), whose run of three straight successes included impressive wide-margin tallies in Sandown's Listed Star S. and Doncaster's G2 Park Hill S., entered winter quarters at the forefront of the juvenile fillies' division after posting another taking score in Friday's G1 bet365 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket. In so doing, she emulated 2017 scorer Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who also picked up Doncaster's Park Hill en route to victory in this straight test. Inspiral had earlier overcome a slow start to debut with a 1 1/2-length score at Newmarket in June and was one of just two ploughing a furrow down the centre of the course and raced in the slipstream of Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) through halfway. Making smooth headway into contention passing the three-furlong pole, the 8-11 favourite launched her challenge at the quarter-mile marker and was pushed out up the hill to comfortably assert superiority for a career high. Park Hill runner-up Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was best of the rest, finishing 2 1/2 lengths adrift of the winner and a neck ahead of the keeping-on Cachet in third.

Caravaggio’s Tenebrism Notches Landmark Score in the G1 Cheveley Park

Westerberg, Coolmore and Merriebelle Stables' 2-year-old filly Tenebrism (Caravaggio) was the first runner for her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy), attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in an instant when posting an impressive 3 3/4-length success in a Mar. 28 five-furlong Naas maiden, and notched another first for the now Ashford Stud incumbent with another taking performance on her comeback in Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket. The March-foaled dark bay was under a patient ride through halfway and raced off the tempo in rear. Nudged along to close passing the quarter-mile marker, she quickened smartly to go third entering the final furlong and went through an array of gears on the rise to the line to inhale 'TDN Rising Star' Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in the dying embers for a one-length success. Kirsten Rausing's G3 Albany S. and G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. victrix Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten), coming back off a second to Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) in last month's G2 Lowther S., ran on well to finish three lengths adrift in third. Zain Claudette never featured at the business end and ran 10th while Juddmonte's hitherto unbeaten G3 Round Tower S. winner Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) tanked into contention at halfway, but was unable to land a telling blow in the closing stages and finished eighth.

“I didn't think it was possible for her to do that, not because of ability but because of the [181-day] lay-off she'd had,” admitted trainer Aidan O'Brien after claiming a fourth renewal. “She had a setback after the last day and was off for a long time. She was just literally ready to come racing and I had a knot in my stomach whether it was fair to be running her or not. But there is only one Cheveley Park and you don't get horses with the speed and the turn of foot she has very often. That's why she's here really. Her dad had a terribly good turn of speed as well and that's what she has. I asked Ryan [Moore] to just get her to relax and find herself and see what's going to happen. She did the very same thing in her maiden and it's a rare thing when you see them able to quicken like that. How far would she stay is the next thing. I had her entered over seven furlongs at the weekend and, usually, if they get seven they might get a mile. Wherever she is, you'll be riding her for speed. You have to train her now as a [G1 1000] Guineas filly and you can come back in trip any time.”

O'Brien, looking to the immediate future, indicated a trip Stateside is an option. “I would say if she's going to go again this year it will be in America,” he said. “The lads will decide if they want to go to the Breeders' Cup and it will depend how she comes out of today. To go travelling would be a great experience for next year and I'd say, if she comes out of it well and the lads want to do it, we'd be delighted to go. It's definitely something we'd have to think about.”

Flotus appeared set fair for victory when bursting clear inside the final quarter mile, but first lady status was denied by the unrelenting surge of Tenebrism in the dying strides. “I thought there was nothing coming out of the pack to catch her, and then you just saw Aidan's filly coming and I thought 'oh, no!',” said trainer Ed Crisford. “She's a proper filly, she ran a huge race and showed what we've been seeing at home. We'll see how she is, there's not that many options left this year. Whether we go to America or not, I'm not sure. She's definitely got the size and scope to make a 3-year-old, which is exciting.”

Tenebrism, half-sister to a yearling filly by Justify, becomes the second pattern-race and first top-level winner for her first-crop sire (by Scat Daddy). She also becomes the first black-type and Group 1 winner for her dam Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), whose career highlights include victories in the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois. Immortal Verse is the leading performer for Listed Prix La Camargo victrix and G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Side of Paradise (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), whose descendants include stakes-winning G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. runner-up Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Side of Paradise is a full-sister to Listed Rose Bowl S. winner Flowerdrum (Ire) as well as being a half-sister to MG1SW sire Last Tycoon (Ire) (Try My Best), G3 Prix du Bois victrix The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best) and dual G3 Goldene Peitsche-winning sire Astronef (Ire) (Be My Guest). Side of Paradise is also kin to the stakes-placed dam of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be My Guest) and G1 Matron S. victrix Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch). Black-type descendants of Tenebrism's third dam Mill Princess (Ire) (Mill Reef) also include top-level winners Hermosa (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Hydrangea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), The United States (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Tie Black (Ire) (Machiavellian).
