Havana Grey’s Jasour Goes Last To First In The G2 July S. At HQ

Al Mohamediya Racing's twice-raced maiden winner Jasour (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}–Twilight Thyme {GB}, by Bahamian Bounty {GB}), previously untested at stakes level, was clearly the best of a nine-strong field in Thursday's G2 Kingdom of Bahrain July S. at Newmarket, powering by every opponent in the closing stages to win the six-furlong contest in decisive fashion. The 16-1 chance was placed under immediate restraint and trailed all eight rivals after an alert getaway from the stands' side gate. Making smooth headway into contention after halfway, he was shaken up to launch his bid approaching the final furlong and quickened impressively up the hill to win going away, by two lengths, from Lake Forest (GB) (No Nay Never) for a career high.

Jasour shaped with promise when a May 18 debut second over five furlongs at Salisbury and graduated over much the same trip in a low-key maiden at Nottingham last month. This black-type debut, his third start, was his first attempt at six furlongs.

“He always gave us a lot of promise and we felt that dropping him in behind was going to see bigger improvement,” explained winning trainer Clive Cox after notching a first win in the race. “He has just run in two races where nothing has been able to lead him early. Stepping up to six [furlongs] was a step into the unknown, but he is going the right way and I'm happy. I'm so pleased for Sheikh Sultan as he is a big supporter and, following on from Golden Horde, this is a real nice horse to have. He will go to the [G2] Richmond [at Goodwwod] from here, but he will have an entry in the [G1 Prix] Morny and we will see what is what.” The winning owner, His Highness Sheikh Sultan, added, “We are delighted, all of my horses are with Clive and he has been brilliant for Al Mohamediya racing. We knew that ours was good, but the others were good too. Everything worked well and we are happy. There are plenty of races for him in the season.”

Running Lion Powers To Impressive Pretty Polly Triumph

Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion–Bella Nouf {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) improved off a debut fourth at Newmarket's July venue with wide-margin wins in one-mile heats at Lingfield and Chelmsford last term and opened this campaign with a decisive score on sophomore return at Kempton last month. Back on the turf for the first time since that first-up effort, she rewarded the race sponsor David Howden with a first win of the Guineas meet and provided the Gosden stable with a seventh triumph in this usually informative G1 Oaks pointer.

The 10-3 chance settled into a comfortable rhythm and raced in a midfield fifth through halfway. Powering forward to loom large on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, she was soon in splendid isolation and surged clear of toiling rivals on the final ascent to easily outclass the hitherto undefeated Sumo Sam (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) by 4 1/2 lengths.

“We brought her down here for a piece of work and Oisin [Murphy] said we should go for the Pretty Polly rather than the 1000 Guineas as she'll need the mile-and-a-quarter, so we've made the right decision,” said John Gosden. “It will be very interesting with this filly whether she's more a Prix de Diane or an Oaks filly. We've got more trials to come, there's the Musidora at York and the Newbury trial, so we'll see how it shapes up. The jockey's first reaction was to possibly stay at a mile-and-a-quarter and I'm always interested as to what they say when they come back straight away, not when they've had time to think. We'll give it a lot of thought and the idea would be to go to one of the Oaks, which one it is I don't know.”

Running Lion becomes the second black-type scorer for Bella Nouf (GB) (Dansili {GB}), whose first is G3 Sweet Solera S. victrix Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Castle Way Makes Stakes Breakthrough At Newmarket

Godolphin's Castle Way (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}–Beach Frolic {GB}, by Nayef), successful in two of four juvenile outings last year, went postward for this early Derby trial coming back off an Oct. 19 handicap triumph over course and distance and stepped up to claim a career high in this black-type bow. Positioned second until inching to the front at halfway, he was shaken up passing the quarter-mile marker and maintained a high tempo under continued urging on the climb to the line to win with something in hand. Leading contender Waipiro (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was scratched after jockey Tom Marquand took a nasty kick to the arm on the way to post.

“William [Buick] has always loved this horse, but he was sitting on the fence as to which one he would ride,” explained Charlie Appleby. “Beforehand, I told William to get on with it and to let him use himself and he has given him a lovely ride. He will stay further for sure. I would say [Royal] Ascot [for the G2 King Edward VII] would be next and the only reason I didn't put him in the Derby picture was he went around Epsom last year and got beat there as favourite. Admittedly the ground was soft, but Adam [Kirby] said he hated the track and he is just one of those horses that is a big unit. I feel we have tried and tested once on that track and I don't really want to go back there again. I feel this horse is far better working from Ascot and then going from there.”

Castle Way, who was a 425,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, is the sixth of eight foals and one of five scorers out of an unraced half-sister to G2 Windsor Forest S. victrix and GI Beverly D. S. placegetter Joviality (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and G1 Criterium International third Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}). The April-foaled chestnut is a half-brother to MG1SW sire Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a 2-year-old colt by Blue Point (Ire) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB).

Mutasaabeq Dominates HQ’s G2 bet365 Mile

Shadwell's 5-year-old entire Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Ghanaati, by Giant's Causeway) was rewarded for his consistency in pattern-race company with a course-and-distance win in September's G2 Joel S. and, penalised three pounds for that success, made a winning seasonal return in Friday's rescheduled G2 bet365 Mile at Newmarket. Racing on the front end after a slick getaway, the 4-1 chance poached a decisive advantage approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under continued urging inside the final furlong to easily account for MG1SW G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by three lengths.

“He was supplemented for the [G1 2000] Guineas as a 3-year-old, so he's always been a good horse,” said trainer Charlie Hills. “He's got a good record here and I'm delighted with the way he's put it to bed, especially given he had the penalty to carry as well today. The blinkers seem to have helped him and we'll have to look at the [May 20 G1] Lockinge now. He's beautifully bred, being by Invincible Spirit out of Ghanaati, so that will have done him no harm today. It's obviously a week shorter now than it would have been between this and the Lockinge, had it been run at Sandown, but I think he should be fine.”
