Exceed and Excel’s Sacred Takes the Nell Gwyn

One of the most exposed of the fillies gathered for Wednesday's G3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket, Cheveley Park Stud's Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) was nevertheless totally unexposed at this seven-furlong trip and showed more than adequate stamina combined with decisive speed to prevail. Switched off towards the rear by Ryan Moore, the 6-1 shot was delivered up the far rail passing halfway by Ryan Moore but needed a gap heading down into the “dip”. Slicing between rivals as soon as the chance appeared, the homebred who was runner-up in three group 2s last term cut down Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) with a furlong remaining en route to a 3/4-of-a-length success, with the 11-4 favourite Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) 1 1/2 lengths away in third. “Her work has been very slick this spring and I think the ground is important to her, quick ground is a must,” trainer William Haggas said. “She got the trip well and if the ground is fast, we'll be coming back here on Guineas day. It's a bit of a no-brainer for me.”

It has been a tumultuous period for the Stud, with the news that David and Patricia Thompson had been awarded CBEs in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in October preceding that of David's passing in January. While the operation has dabbled successfully with jump racing and unearthed some leading talent in that sphere, there is nothing that better epitomises their ethos than success at the local track with a homebred filly in a prestigious flat race. Sacred was campaigned over five and six furlongs at two, winning here on debut in June before playing bridesmaid in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot, G2 Lowther S. at York and G2 Flying Childers S. at Doncaster. Out of sorts when last of eight in the G1 Cheveley Park S. back at this venue in late September, she was worth a try at this distance given that she is out of a half to Lady Eli (Divine Park) and Haggas has been adamant she was more than just a fast juvenile.

“She got beat in three group twos last year, which was frustrating, before she went off the boil but I've always maintained she'd stay and she's proved that today,” the master of Somerville Lodge commented. “She's got a nice turn of speed and she picked up really well. Ryan said seven is her trip, but there's only one Guineas a year and she can always drop back down later. I don't think she does much in front either, so if you're brave you can wait longer. He gave her a lovely ride and I thought she won nicely.” Saffron Beach will meet the winner again in the May 2 G1 1000 Guineas and trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said, “I thought she ran well–I was really pleased, Adam [Kirby] was happy with her and she ran right through the line. She had a good blow, which we knew she would because she's 85-90 per cent fit, so we'll look forward to the Guineas now. She looked to me as if she's ready for a mile now, comfortably. She was coming back at the line.”

Sacred's dam Sacre Caroline (Blame) was a shrewd 300,000gns purchase by the Stud at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale and the half-sister to the five-times grade I-winning champion turf female Lady Eli and to the GIII Regret S. and GIII Mint Julep H. winner Bizzy Caroline (Afleet Alex) has provided instant reward with this first foal. Not that Lady Eli is the only top-level performer in the family, with the likes of Sweet Loretta (Tapit), Spiced Perfection (Smiling Tiger), Spring in the Air (Spring at Last), Palace Episode (Machiavellian), Laughing Lashes (Mr. Greeley), Pays to Dream (High Yield) and The Last Zip (City Zip) all under the third dam Kazadancoa (Fr) (Green Dancer). Next up from the dam is the 2-year-old filly Enshrine (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), while she also has a 2020 colt by that sire.

Siyouni’s St Mark’s Basilica Prevails In the Dewhurst

Saturday’s G1 Darley Dewhurst S. proved the latest in a line of O’Brien family benefits, with Aidan stamping his authority with a one-two courtesy of St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Joseph’s Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) rounding out the placings. Behind that pair when third in The Curragh’s G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. over this seven-furlong trip Sept. 13, St Mark’s Basilica was under cover early with Frankie Dettori playing a waiting game with the pace strong up ahead. Threaded through a gap to take the advantage approaching the final furlong, the 10-1 shot who is a half-brother to Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) ultimately had more stamina on the ground than the National hero Thunder Moon and held his stablemate Wembley by 3/4 of a length, with the 11-4 favourite fading to be 1 3/4 lengths away. “You know with Aidan O’Brien, even the number two horse is a strong one,” Dettori said after steering a seventh Dewhurst winner for the master of Ballydoyle. “In fairness, he didn’t put a foot wrong and did everything I asked him to. He’s neat, nimble, handled the dip and a mile will be no problem in the Guineas.”

St Mark’s Basilica’s first three starts took place over six furlongs at The Curragh, with a debut second in a maiden July 26 followed by a fifth placing when the subject of a gamble as the 7-2 favourite for the Aug. 9 G1 Phoenix S. Off the mark next time at the expense of the impressive subsequent scorers Loch Lein (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Duke of Mantua (Ire) (No Nay Never) and the G3 Round Tower S. third Coulthard (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) on soft ground Aug. 22, he was run out of third late by Wembley after Thunder Moon had flown in the National but despite two defeats at the highest level as a member of Team Ballydoyle was impossible to rule out here. Like Friday’s G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) withdrawn from Sunday’s action at ParisLongchamp due to the feed contamination, the bay was able to find abundant cover in this field packed with talent and reserve his kick for the business end.

While the Richard Hannon pair Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) were never a factor and the supplemented Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) ran too free along with his G2 Mill Reef S. combatant Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the race was an Irish affair from before the furlong pole. Even the G2 Champions Juvenile winner Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) was in the pursuit, while the Jim Bolger runner Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) was close enough to the premises to confirm the already-existing impression that the Irish hold sway with the juveniles in 2020. It was left to the 100-1 shot Devilwala (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) to deny a one-two-three-four for the visitors, but the Ralph Beckett trainee had the stand’s rail and there is a strong theory that a bias exists there on this track.

“We’re delighted with both of them,” the Ballydoyle handler said. “The plan was that St Mark’s Basilica would run in France and then Wembley would run in the Dewhurst, that’s the way we were going. We’ve always liked St Mark’s Basilica a lot and we’ve always thought they were very smart colts. The first three were were the same three as in the National Stakes. Every year it’s a great race and the form always stands up. The Breeders’ Cup is possible for the winner, but we’re thinking Battleground will go to the Breeders’ Cup, so he doesn’t have to go.”

As mentioned, St Mark’s Basilica is the second winner of a prestige Newmarket contest for the G3 Silver Flash S.-winning dam Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) alongside last year’s G1 2000 Guineas hero Magna Grecia, who also captured the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at two and was runner-up in this card’s G3 Autumn S. She is a half to the G3 Solario S. scorer Drumfire (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and the stakes winner Ho Choi (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who was also runner-up in the G2 Gimcrack S. The listed-placed third dam Fife (Ire) (Lomond) is also the second dam of the G3 Park S. winner and G1 Moyglare S. runner-up Ugo Fire (Ire) (Bluebird), while this is also the family of the GI Hollywood Turf Cup hero Frenchpark (GB) and the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}). The latter is the second dam of the recent G3 Fairy Bridge S. runner-up Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Cabaret’s full-brother to St Mark’s Basilica was led out unsold at 650,000gns during Tuesday’s session of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.

Dubawi’s One Ruler Dominates the Autumn

Third in a strong renewal of the seven-furlong Listed Flying Scotsman S. at Doncaster Sept. 11, Godolphin’s One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) showed improvement for the step up to a mile to stamp his class on Saturday’s G3 Emirates Autumn S. at Newmarket. Settled in mid-division early racing wide, the 5-1 shot loomed on the outer under William Buick and after taking the lead at the two-furlong pole readily asserted to score by 1 3/4 lengths from Van Gogh (American Pharoah), with another Appleby representative Dhahabi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) 1 1/2 lengths behind in third. “I think it was a very nice performance on very soft ground and stepping him up in trip has helped,” Buick said. “He probably handled the ground, but will be better on a better surface for sure. The Flying Scotsman at Doncaster was a funny race–I ended up too far back and set him a bit of a task, but today was far more straightforward for him. He showed today that he has improved.”

Brushed aside on debut by the subsequent G3 Solario S. winner Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) over seven at Sandown July 23, One Ruler returned to the same course and distance a month later to beat Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Latest Generation (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in a maiden that has proven a rich source of subsequent winners. Taking part in another competitive event in the Flying Scotsman, the bay was hampered late on there when third behind the eventual G2 Royal Lodge S. winner New Mandate (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) but gave the impression he needed another furlong and easier surface. Appleby said, “William feels that the horse has enough pace to be a Guineas contender. His dam Fintry was a group 2 winner over a mile and he is a son of Dubawi who will get stronger over the winter, which could build on his speed. I think he is a horse who we would have to consider strongly for the 2000 Guineas.”

Of the third, who is a half-brother to Golden Horn (GB), he added, “Dhahabi is going to be a mile-and-a-half horse and shaped well over today’s trip. It was his third run and he is still learning on the job–he was slow from the gates before travelling into the race well and galloping out strongly. Stepping up in trip is only going to suit and hopefully we will see more improvement as we go further with him.”

As Appleby stated, One Ruler is out of the classy Andre Fabre trainee Fintry (Ire) (Shamardal), who captured the G2 Prix de Sandringham, G3 Atalanta S. and G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil in which she defeated Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). Also third in the G1 Sun Chariot S., she was the best of a trio of stakes performers out of the G3 Prix Vanteaux winner and GI Garden City Breeders’ Cup-placed Campsie Fells (UAE) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Fintry, whose colt foal is by Fastnet Rock (Aus), shares her G3 Rockfel S.-placed second dam Queen’s View (Fr) (Lomond) with the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere third Indian Jade (GB) (Sleeping Indian {GB}).

Galileo’s Lone Eagle Best In the Zetland

Stepping out of nursery company having won a competitive affair at Doncaster Sept. 12, Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm’s Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made most of the running to land Saturday’s 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. at Newmarket. Ridden from the break by Silvestre de Sousa to race on the front end, the 16-5 shot was joined by Fabilis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and shared the lead with that rival throughout the early stages. Seeing him off before coping with Recovery Run (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) on the run to the line, the bay registered a 1 3/4-length success as the runner-up pulled seven lengths clear of Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}). “It was a nice performance, as it is not easy for a two-year-old on that kind of ground,” de Sousa said. “He is really tough, he’s not very big but he gallops his heart out.”

Runner-up to Recovery Run on debut over a mile at Sandown Aug. 7, Lone Eagle was off the mark over that trip at Goodwood next time Aug. 28 prior to his Doncaster success and despite being steadily progressive had not made any dramatic improvement in that period. Blessed with the rail here over a trip extreme for juveniles which obviously holds no fears, the Ballylinch homebred kept finding as his old rival pressed in the closing stages in a performance that said more St Leger than Epsom Derby where 2021 is concerned. Freddie Meade said, “He’s got a progressive profile and we thought he’d be crying out this trip and would relish it. We were happy about the ground, as he went on it at Goodwood and is a horse that doesn’t over-race and needs stoking up. He’s a horse that would suit Epsom and the Derby is a great thing to think about. He showed he can handle a quirky track like Goodwood and ran on quick ground first time and on good at Doncaster, so is versatile.”

Lone Eagle is the first foal out of the staying dam Modernstone (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), who was successful in the Fasig-Tipton Ladies Marathon S. and was third in the GIII Dowager S. for the Christophe Clement stable before being purchased for 1million gns by Ballylinch Stud at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a granddaughter of the unraced Modena (Roberto), an influential producer for Juddmonte responsible for the high-class pair of Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}) and Reams of Verse (Nureyev), with the latter the winner of the G1 Epsom Oaks, as well as the G2 Yorkshire Cup winner Manifest (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Another of Modena’s progeny Midsummer (GB) (Kingmambo) in turn produced the multiple group and grade I heroine Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), whose son Midterm (GB) by Galileo captured the G3 Sandown Classic Trial and whose half-sister Sun Maiden (GB) by Galileo’s son Frankel (GB) took the G3 Hoppings S. and was placed in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. Modernstone’s second foal is a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire).
