Team TalkSPORT Triumphs as Racing League Concludes

The William Hill Racing League ended at Newcastle on Thursday evening with Team talkSPORT crowned the winner. A total of 12 teams competed in the weekly Thursday races that began six weeks ago, with Gosforth Park, Doncaster, Windsor and Lingfield (twice) all hosting a night. Each race carried a £50,000 purse, with 25 points awarded to the winner, with points available through 10th place. Besides the £1.8 million in prizemoney on offer throughout the contest, another £200,000 in bonuses was on off with £150,000 going to the winning team.

At the top of the table with 368.5 points, Team talkSPORT consisted of trainers Michael Bell, Ed Dunlop, James Fanshawe and Roger Varian. They will split £60,000 between them. Team talkSPORT's jockeys, led by Jack Mitchell, will divide £30,000, as will the yard staff of the trainers and the owners whose horses made up the successful team.

Michael Bell's brother Rupert Bell, who co-managed the winning team with fellow broadcaster Alan Brazil, said, “I think it's been fantastic. I'm the Pep Guardiola of the racing manager world–Alan Brazil had absolutely nothing to do with it. I've been at every meeting and well done to the trainers and all their staff. Fair play to them.

“You can't knock the stable staff getting £30,000–that's fantastic. There'll be one hell of a party at Fitzroy House [Michael Bell's yard]–I better get invited.”

In second place at the end of the evening was eToro Racing with 359.5 points and Team ThoroughBid was third with 351 points. Thursday's two-time winner Jack Mitchell (276.5 points) was top of the standings among jockeys and earned £25,000, with six wins overall. Hayley Turner was runner-up with 231 points. Her prize was £15,000. In third place was Saffie Osborne, who took home £10,000.

Newmarket Red Leads Racing League

Team Newmarket Red leads the Racing League standings after the first card at Newcastle on Thursday evening, despite failing to post a winner.

The six-race card was the first of six meetings that comprise the £1.8-million Racing League, which pits 12 teams against each other in races worth £50,000 apiece. Team Newmarket Red, comprised of Robert Cowell, John and Thady Gosden, Sir Mark Prescott and David Simcock recorded three seconds and two thirds, good for 85 points. Team talkSPORT sits second.

Broadcaster Rupert Bell, who manages Team talkSPORT along with Alan Brazil, said, “There does seem to be quite a nice, friendly feeling about it, with all the teams doing their bit. I think it does feel right. It's a long haul, but if the racing can stay as competitive as it is at the moment, that's great. You've guaranteed 10 to 12 runner fields and surely the racecourses want that and the betting industry wants that.”

Paul Mulrennan, who rode Saluti to win the opening race for Team Arena, said, “At the end of the day, there's a lot of money being pumped into our sport, which can't be anything but good. I know there's a few people unhappy they've not been able to compete this year, but it might be their time next year. It could be a different trainer or jockey that gets a chance.

“There's a real good buzz in the weighing room tonight. All the teams and everything just makes it a bit different–it's not your usual Thursday night at Newcastle.”

New TDN Rising Star As Frankel’s John Leeper Shines

Newcastle's QuinnBet Novice S. may end up being an important footnote by the end of the year as Friday's extended 10-furlong contest played host to Anamoine Ltd's precious homebred colt John Leeper (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Emulating his illustrious dam Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) in breaking his maiden on the all-weather, the dark bay flashed the considerable ability that gets you into the Derby picture at this stage of the season to earn TDN Rising Star status. Anchored in rear early from his wide draw, the 9-4 joint-favourite whose half-sister Virgin Snow (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) finished runner-up in last year's G3 Hoppings Fillies' S. over this course and distance was green and climbing at times in behind rivals but Hollie Doyle kept typically calm as she plotted a way through. Giving the well-fancied duo Moktasaab (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and First Light (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a sizeable headstart in the straight, the Ed Dunlop-trained G1 Epsom Derby entry who was fourth on debut over seven furlongs at Doncaster in September picked them up in the style of a class act without being shown the whip. Surging by the other joint-favourite Moktasaab with a furlong remaining, the homebred made the winning distance to that Shadwell rival four lengths on natural ability at the line and Doyle's hardest job was pulling him up. First Light, a John and Thady Gosden-trained relative of Angara (GB) (Alzao), was a further 2 1/2 lengths away as the field spread out behind the winner whose time was also smart.

“He's a big powerful horse and an absolute gentleman,” his rider commented. “He was very professional and very relaxed–he settled well and the further he was going the better. He's pretty special, I think. Ed said to ride him like a good horse and try not to use my stick. The big step up in trip today helped and he'll probably stay a mile and a half in time.”

Snow Fairy enjoyed six outings as a juvenile, winning over six furlongs on Lingfield's Polytrack before finishing third in the G3 Prestige S. Taking off at three, she entered the G1 Epsom Oaks with valid stamina doubts having booked her ticket in the 10-furlong Listed Height of Fashion S. but saw out the mile-and-a-half trip strongly. Third before being eventually promoted to second behind her on that occasion was Remember When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the dam of last year's blue riband hero Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in what could prove a twist of fate if John Leeper provides the dream scenario on the first Saturday in June.

After winning the G1 Irish Oaks by eight lengths, Snow Fairy was even tried over an extended 14 furlongs in the G1 St Leger but found that distance too far before turning into an international queen with four more top-level triumphs. This is her third foal, with the aforementioned Virgin Snow also finishing third in the G3 Darley Pride S. Her family includes the operation's Listed Autumn S. and G3 Furstenberg-Rennen winner and over-achieving sire Big Bad Bob (Ire) (Bob Back), who sadly died in 2016.
