ARRAY (IRE) (No Nay Never) wins the award for the day's best-bred newcomer, being the sixth foal out of Juddmonte's prized mare Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who shares her famed dam Kind (Ire) (Danehill) with the great Frankel (GB). Not surprisingly, given his achievements with the Juddmonte giant's son Chaldean (GB), Andrew Balding has been handed care of homebred whose half-siblings include the Group 1-placed Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal).

HIDDEN PASS (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was a big deal at the Arqana May Breeze Up, with Godolphin going to €400,000 for the Shadwell-bred half-brother to the G2 Let's Elope S. winner Turaath (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Charlie Appleby introduces the February-foaled chestnut in the race which saw Desert Hero

QBCS To Sponsor Quartet of Autumn Juvenile Races

QIPCO British Champions Series (QBCS) will sponsor a set of maiden races this autumn to help strengthen the 2-year-old programme in Great Britain. The four races will be run at the QBCS racecourses of Doncaster, Goodwood, Newbury and York. Each race will be run for a total prize fund of £30,000.

The QIPCO British Champions Series-sponsored maidens are scheduled from late-August to October, offering a springboard to compete in the 2024 Series, which kicks off at the QIPCO 2000 Guineas in May.

David Redvers, QIPCO's representative and Racing Manager to Qatar Racing, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this initiative to boost prize money for developmental races and enhance the competitiveness of the British racing and breeding industries.”

 

The four newly sponsored races are made up as follows:

Tuesday, Aug. 29 – Newbury

QIPCO British Champions Series Maiden Fillies' S., 6f

 

Wednesday, Sept. 27 – Goodwood

QIPCO British Champions Series EBF Maiden S., 1m 2f

 

Saturday, Oct. 14 – York

Friday, Oct. 27 – Doncaster

QIPCO British Champions Series EBF Maiden Fillies' S., 1m

George Hill New Clerk of the Course at Newbury

Newbury Racecourse appointed George Hill its new Clerk of the Course, succeeding Keith Ottesen who leaves the role following the conclusion of the Dubai Duty Free International Meeting Sept. 22-23.

Hill, current Clerk of the Course for Arena Racing Company's (ARC) Southern Region and at Lingfield Racecourse, previously served as Clerk at both Brighton and Fontwell Racecourses. With multiple years of experience in the bloodstock industry prior to starting as trainee Clerk of the Course at Brighton Racecourse in 2015, Hill has been with ARC for 10 years. Hill was instrumental in the introduction of the Winter Million fixture at Lingfield, which was launched in 2022 offering a million pounds in prize money across three days of competitive Flat and Jump racing.

Julian Thick, CEO of Newbury Racecourse, added: “We are delighted that George will be joining us; he has a wealth of experience across both codes and has shown great innovation in the new concepts he has introduced in his current role. We are looking forward to working with him at Newbury and identifying areas where he sees scope for further development and new initiatives.”

Racing Staff Week Returns Saturday

Racing Welfare's Racing Staff Week returns for its seventh year this Saturday, June 24, the charity announced on Monday. The industry's annual celebration of people who work in British horseracing brings together the racing business and its followers to recognize the workers inside the industry. Sponsored by Betfair, this year will see five charity races specifically for stable staff, as well as a number of community events and a competitions with prizes of £500 in vouchers awarded to the winners. Races will be held at Ayr, Chepstow, Newbury, Nottingham and Newcastle throughout the week.

“Racing Staff Week is the highlight in our community calendar,” Racing Welfare's Head of Community Engagement Adam Ferguson said. “It provides a brilliant opportunity for everyone in the industry to celebrate the dedication, passion and skill of racing's people, whether that be through supporting our stable staff riders, attending or hosting a community event or entering the thank you competition. We're looking forward to getting started on Saturday and encourage anyone working in racing to get involved if they can.”
