Kingman’s Guru a New Rising Star On Debut At Newbury

Newbury’s bet365 EBF Novice S. at Saturday looked the type of race to throw up something special beforehand and the feast of fancy pedigrees duly delivered as Lady Bamford’s newcomer Guru (GB) (Kingman {GB}) denied Juddmonte’s Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in a photo. Settled off the pace as Adam Kirby found a lead throughout the early stages of this seven-furlong contest, the 8-1 shot had to surrender first run to the eventual runner-up inside the final two furlongs but picked up in style to reel in that rival in the final stride. At the line, the homebred son of the high-class Dream Peace (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) had prevailed by a nose from the son of Joyeuse (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), with three lengths separating them and Legend of Dubai (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). That first foal out of the G1 Prix Jean Romanet and G1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) was making it a one-two-three for the blueblooded newcomers in a race that could be talked about for some time to come.

John Gosden’s son Thady was on hand to discuss the winner and said, “He did everything right in the race and is a pretty laid-back horse at home. He was taking everything in today on this first day at school and he may be one to treat gently and take in a novice rather than going straight into a group race. Sir Michael Stoute’s horse [Maximal] looked a lovely horse in the paddock, so we were pleased to be there with him at the end.”

Guru looks as if he could be the best progeny so far out of Dream Peace, who was bought for 2.7million gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Initially with Robert Collet, the Kilfrush Stud-bred mare captured the G2 Prix de la Nonette and was third in the GI E.P. Taylor S. and runner-up in the GI Diana S. before joining Chad Brown and placing in the GI Flower Bowl Invitational and the E.P. Taylor and Diana again. The second dam is Truly a Dream (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) who captured the E.P. Taylor when it was staged as a grade II and also the G3 Prix de Royaumont before producing the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains runner-up Catcher In the Rye (Ire) (Danehill). Also connected to the top-class trio of L’Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Moonstone (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) and Cerulean Sky (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), Dream Peace’s yearling colt is by Frankel (GB).

Dubawi’s Book One Sensation Darain a New Rising Star At Newbury

It may have taken time to see him in action, but Qatar Racing and Watership Down Stud’s 3.5million gns 2018 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 Sale topper Darain (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) made the wait worthwhile with a command performance to earn TDN Rising Star status on his debut on Wednesday’s evening card at Newbury. Sent off the 2-1 favourite for division two of the 10-furlong Oakley Coachbuilders Super Sport Novice S., the bay was allowed to bowl along on the front end by Oisin Murphy and ambled along with Winter Reprise (Fr) (Intello {Ger}). Asked to step it up approaching two out, the John Gosden-trained son of Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) powered clear to record a 4 3/4-length success as Godolphin’s newcomer Brilliant Light (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) grabbed second by half a length from Winter Reprise. “We didn’t go very fast early as they were inexperienced horses and we really got racing from the bottom of the straight,” Murphy said. “Darain went through the gears well and galloped right to the line. I’m pleased with him, he has an exciting future.”

Although he is a full-brother to 2018’s juvenile sensation Too Darn Hot (GB), Hwt. 2yo Colt-Eur, Hwt. 3yo-Fr at 5-7f, Hwt. 3yo-Eng at 7-9 1/2f, Hwt. 3yo-Eur at 7-9 1/2f, Hwt. 2yo Colt-Eng, G1SW-Fr, MG1SW-Eng, G1SP-Ire, $1,651,829, Darain is more in the mould of his dam who was also labelled a TDN Rising Star prior to recording three successes at the highest level over 10 and 12 furlongs. Top-class racemare and now broodmare supreme, she has thrown four black-type performers with the smart multiple group-placed colt De Treville (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})–now a resident sire at Haras du Mezeray–followed by the trio of Dubawis So Mi Dar (GB), Lah Ti Dar (GB) and the aforementioned Too Darn Hot. So Mi Dar was like her dam successful in the G3 Musidora S. before finishing third in the G1 Prix de l’Opera, GSW-Eng, G1SP-Fr, $242,742, while Lah Ti Dar took the G2 Middleton S. and stayed sufficiently to be runner-up in the G1 St Leger, GSW & MG1SP-Eng, G1SP-Fr, $637,568.

Darain has everything going for him to become a leading light, with other significant presences under the G1 Prix Vermeille-winning second dam Darara (Ire) (Top Ville {Ire}) including the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic hero Rewilding (GB) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), the G1 Ranvet S. winner Darazari (Ire) and his Hong Kong champion full-brother Diaghilev (Ire). Also related to the G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning champion and leading sire Darshaan (GB) and G1 Coronation Cup and G1 Hong Kong Vase scorer Daliapour (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), Dar Re Mi has 2-year-old and yearling full-sisters to Darain to follow.

Pub in the Paddock at Newbury on Derby Day

Newbury has created ‘Pub in the Paddock’, a pop-up for guests to watch the July 4 G1 Investec Derby. As well as the Derby, the Oaks will also be shown along with two live Premier League matches next Saturday. Tables and chairs will be set at socially-distanced levels, and the bars will be accepting only cashless payments. Tickets were free, but all available for a maximum attendance of 300 have already been reserved.

Harriet Collins, Newbury’s head of public relations, said, “With beer gardens opening, we felt that it was a bit of an opportunity because we have outdoor space and we can do it in a socially-distanced way. It’s a chance for some of our members who have been starved of live sport to enjoy the Derby with some friends, and we’re hopeful that in the not too distant future we can start to welcome back owners, sponsors and customers.

“We’re not in breach of any guidelines and we’re viewing it as a chance to gain some revenue in very uncertain times, as well as easing a bit of pressure on local business. They may have to bring a brolly, but we’ve got the big screens, people will be safe and at the same time catch up with friends and family.”
