Ribchester Colt Streaks to Rising Stardom at Newbury

Richard Hannon trainee Gisburn (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) was unable to make all when an Apr. 16 debut fourth tackling five furlongs at Newbury in his only prior start, but the flashy chestnut powered up over six furlongs at the Berkshire venue to earn TDN Rising Stardom in hugely impressive fashion. The well-backed 6-4 favourite was sharpest from the gates and seized an immediate lead. Last off the bridle after halfway, he was given a shake of the reins with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and surged clear in the closing stages to leave Kingmax (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) trailing 6 1/2 lengths in his wake, becoming the third winner for his freshman sire (by Iffraaj {GB}).

“Gisburn hasn't done much since his first run, but he's a horse Richard [Hannon] has loved from the day he saw him,” revealed winning rider Pat Dobbs. “His debut here was good, but he ran green. He was professional today, although I'd rather he didn't hang right. He's still a baby though, but very exciting, and he put a lot of daylight between them. I'm sure he'll go to Royal Ascot, maybe for the [June 15 G2] Coventry.”

Gisburn is the seventh of eight foals and third scorer produced by Listed Prix Coronation runner-up Disclose (GB) (Dansili {GB}). He is a half-brother to Listed Golden Rose S. victor Encrypted (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire). Descendants of his second dam Revealing (GB) (Halling), herself a half-sister to G2 Queen's Vase and G3 Park Hill S. placegetter Singleton (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and a granddaughter of GI Oak Leaf S. heroine Arewehavingfunyet (Sham), also include G2 Rockfel S. and G3 Oh So Sharp S. placegetter Gavota (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), G3 Prix Paul de Moussac third Grand Vista (GB) (Danehill) and the dual stakes-placed World Ruler (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Wootton Bassett’s Chindit Battles To Greenham Win

Michael Pescod's Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) arguably set the standard in Sunday's G3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham S. at Newbury and while he had to work he was able to prevail in a tight finale to the seven-furlong Guineas trial. Successful in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster in September before finishing ninth in the G1 Dewhurst S. on a soft surface at Newmarket in October, the 7-4 favourite was on contrasting ground here and may have been feeling it racing in mid-division early under Pat Dobbs. Looking briefly to have been left behind as Hollie Doyle committed Mehmento (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) on the front end two out, he put his head down and duly got to that 18-1 shot near the line to earn a neck success, dragging The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) with him in the process with that rival the same margin back in third. “He's been brought along nice and steady and hasn't been overworked at all, so there should be plenty left in the tank,” Dobbs said. “I was worried between the four and the three, normally he travels super but he was a little bit flat-footed.”
Chindit, who had taken Ascot's Listed Pat Eddery S. in July prior to his Champagne win, is on target for the May 1 G1 2000 Guineas according to Richard Hannon who said, “He was workmanlike, but I'd rather see that as he was very relaxed in his work so it suggest he wants a mile. That's changed, as in the winter he was working like a six-furlong horse. He will go for the Guineas, but I just worry if the undulations at Newmarket will let him build up that momentum in the same way he did today towards the finish. The French and Irish Guineas would be more convenient tracks, but the English Guineas are the ones you want to win.”

The winner is the first foal out of Always a Dream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a granddaughter of the Listed Conqueror S. winner Out West (Gone West) who achieved notoriety as the dam of the G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Racing Post Trophy hero and successful sire Motivator (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) and his G2 Hardwicke S.-winning full-brother Macarthur (GB). The fourth dam Chellingoua (Sharpen Up {GB}) is kin to the GI Haskell Invitational H. and GI San Fernando S. hero and leading sire Wavering Monarch. Always a Dream's as-yet unnamed 2-year-old colt by Awtaad (Ire) was a 80,000gns purchase by Badgers Bloodstock at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

Fred Darling Success For No Nay Never’s Alcohol Free

Trying a seventh furlong for the first time in Sunday's G3 Fred Darling S. at Newbury, Jeff Smith's G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) had just enough stamina to see it out and deny the dark horse Statement (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) in a bobber. Held out wide halfway down the field under Oisin Murphy, the 9-4 favourite swooped to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and had to battle as the Martyn Meade trainee joined her soon after. Getting her nose down on the line, she had the call by a short head, with Vadream (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) 2 1/4 lengths away in third. “She's going to give herself every chance of staying in the Guineas,” Murphy commented. “I was very happy with the way she relaxed, as she can be pretty full-on. Top marks, that was a lovely start.”

Trainer Andrew Balding was bullish about Alcohol Free seeing out the extra furlong in Newmarket's May 2 G1 1000 Guineas and said, “She was drawn slightly out on the wing, but I couldn't be happier and to be honest we weren't coming here expecting to win–just hoping she showed nicely. She's been slow to come into her coat and we haven't done an awful lot with her. She settled so well and I can't see a problem with the mile so she'll go to Newmarket. That is very much the plan and today is a bonus.”

Alcohol Free's dam Plying (Hard Spun), who also produced the Listed Prix le Fabuleux-winning miler Alexander James (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), is out of the listed-placed Nasaieb (Ire) (Fairy King) and therefore a half to the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. third Kissing Lights (Ire) Machiavellian). Nasaieb is kin to the G3 Solario S. scorer Raise a Grand (Ire) (Grand Lodge), while this is also the family of the champion juvenile filly Numbered Account (Buckpasser). Plying's 2-year-old filly Hooked On You (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was a 130,000gns purchase by Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale, while €80,000 was paid by Ballyhane for her yearling colt by Dandy Man (Ire) at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Showcasing’s Alkumait Outpoints Mill Reef Rivals

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s twice-raced Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) broke through tackling six furlongs in a July 28 Goodwood maiden and continued his upward path with a decisive victory returning in Saturday’s G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. at Newbury. The February-foaled bay, who had posted a close-up fourth in a July 19 novice heat over Newbury’s straight six in his only other start, was 3/4-of-a-length too good for King Power Racing’s 475,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), with G1 Prix Morny third Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) 2 3/4 lengths further back and best of the rest. The 8-1 chance was steadied to race within range of the leaders at the tail of the field after breaking to the fore in this black-type bow. Making smooth headway once past halfway, he quickened smartly to launch his bid entering the final furlong and was pushed out from there to comfortably outpoint 5-2 favourite Fivethousandttoone for a career high.
