Zoffany’s Sakheer Oozes Class In Mill Reef Power Display

KHK Racing's 2-year-old twice-raced colt Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}–Shortmile Lady {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}), a promising debut second at Windsor in August, attained 'TDN Rising Stardom' with a wide-margin demolition at Haydock on the first of this month and repeated the dose with another imperious performance in Saturday's G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. at Newbury. The 4-5 favourite was alert from the stalls and found a smooth rhythm in a handy third through the early fractions of this black-type bow. Tanking forward to loom large on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, he settled the contest in an instant when quickening for control soon after and powered further clear under minimal coaxing in the latter stages to easily outclass Rousing Encore (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) by 3 1/2 lengths. The winner's Roger Varian stablemate Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) fared best of the remainder and finished 3/4-of-a-length further adrift in third.

“His work has always been very good at home and we thought he would win first time, but he ran into a smart filly at Windsor [Magical Sunset],” said Varian. “He then won well at Haydock and he looks good. How good, I don't know, but he is possibly the best of my 2-year-olds. He has size and scope, he's very exciting and I think he'll stay seven furlongs or a mile. You can never really expect things to go as well for us as it has today, but everything is clicking. He is in the [G1] Middle Park, but it's next week. It's very soon, so we'll have to see.”

Sakheer, who was the highest-priced lot when knocked down for €550,000 at this year's Arqana Breeze-Up sale, is the fifth of seven foals and one of three scorers produced by a half-sister to G3 Prix de Meautry winner Indian Maiden (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), herself the dam of G3 World Trophy victrix Maid In India (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) and the dual stakes-winning G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis second Love Spirit (GB) (Elusive City). The February-foaled bay, who hails from the family of Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}) and Chief's Crown (Danzig), is a half-brother to multiple Group-winning GI Beverly D. S. third Lemista (Ire) (Raven's Pass), a yearling colt by Exceed And Excel (Aus) and a weanling filly by Sea The Stars (Ire).

Frankel’s TDN Rising Star Nashwa Sparkles in Newbury’s Oaks Trial

Suddenly, it looks like the Gosdens have a quandary regarding the Oaks after Imad Al Sagar's TDN Rising Star Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) threw her hat into the ring with a sparkling display in Newbury's Listed Haras De Bouquetot Fillies' Trial S. on Saturday. With much of the space available for the Epsom Classic already taken up with the stable's Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), it may be to Chantilly that this talented individual heads for the June 19 G1 Prix de Diane so as to avoid a clash between the star fillies for now.

The latter 10 1/2-furlong test may be the way to go regardless, as she showed so much speed when breaking her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths over a mile at Haydock Apr. 23 and again here that the sharper trip will come more naturally at present. Anchored in last early by Hollie Doyle, the 5-6 favourite was finally given the command to take her rivals three out and a furlong later was in firm control at the head of affairs without a serious question being posed. Despite the sterling effort of Stay Alert (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the run to the line, there was a sense that Nashwa was idling as she recorded a 1 3/4-length verdict with Mukaddamah (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths further behind, 11 lengths clear of the remainder.

Top-class horses seem to follow Teddy Grimthorpe around and the owner-breeder's racing manager had a new one to reflect on here. “She settled well, quickened well and galloped to the line. She has taken it in her stride in every way,” he said. “She has got options of the Oaks and the Prix de Diane, which is a very nice conundrum. I think the great thing is the way she took herself into the race and lengthened–she is a lovely-striding filly from that point of view and Hollie gets on with her well.”

Thady Gosden hinted that the Diane could be at the forefront of plans. “She posted very smart sectionals at Haydock and she is a filly we have always liked a lot,” he said. “She shows a great attitude. Obviously we were drawn wide today which was not ideal, but Hollie dropped her in and settled her very well at the back and she was very well switched off there. She picked up well in the straight and found a good turn of foot. Obviously, she will have learned from the experience today. They are two different types of horses. Emily Upjohn is a big, rangy girl, where Nashwa is a little more compact. There is Epsom or France for the Prix de Diane and she has plenty of toe, so that will be a possibility.”

Nashwa, half-sister to a yearling filly by Decorated Knight (GB), is the third of four foals and one of two scorers produced by stakes-winning G1 Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Princess Loulou (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), herself a half-sister to Listed Pomfret S. third Easy Target (Fr) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Descendants of the May-foaled homebred bay's dual stakes-placed third dam Sweeping (GB) (Indian King), herself out of G3 Prix d'Arenberg winner Glancing (GB) (Grundy {Ire}), include G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire Awzaan (GB) (Alhaarth {Ire}), G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. winner Ball Lightning (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) and GIII Will Rogers S. victor Media Mogul (GB) (First Trump {GB}).

Baaeed Is Unmatched in Newbury’s G1 Lockinge

Unbeaten through six starts after annexing last October's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot, Shadwell Estate Company's 4-year-old homebred and G1 Prix du Moulin hero Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Aghareed, by Kingmambo) launched his quest for superstardom by putting a stellar field to the sword in Saturday's G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. at Newbury. Europe's top miler of 2021, and the world's joint-highest alongside Hong Kong's immovable force Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro), made relentless progression throughout his perfect sophomore campaign and continued in similar vein to plunder Britain's first elite-level contest of the season for older horses by daylight in scarcely believable fashion. The April-foaled bay was considered by the betting market to be almost unbeatable and hit the lids as the 4-9 favourite. Comfortable and in a smooth rhythm behind the leaders racing fourth until beyond halfway, he was angled into an open lane with 2 1/2 furlongs remaining and left toiling rivals in his wake once shaken up for control approaching the final eighth, powering clear in highly impressive style to win as champions do by 3 1/4 lengths from Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was best of the remainder, 1 3/4 lengths adrift, and earned his first Group 1 black type at the fifth attempt.

Success brought a second renewal for both Shadwell and Jim Crowley, who teamed up with Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) in 2019, but it was a first for William Haggas hot on the hooves of a banner week at York's May festival. Baaeed is now set to head to the Knavesmire himself, via Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Anne S., for a first go at 10 furlongs in August's G1 Juddmonte International. The great Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) inhaled both contests in 2012, taking in a G1 Sussex S. along the way.

“He is an absolute pleasure to ride and very straightforward,” beamed Crowley. “Everything went smoothly and it was like clockwork. There was not a lot of pace in the race, but he has such a turn of foot and, if they had gone quicker, it probably would have helped him. He is the most beautifully-bred horse and is everything you want in a racehorse. Nothing seems to faze him and he doesn't appear to have any weaknesses. I can't think of one. He is really bright, he has gears, he relaxes and he stays the mile extremely well. He has got a turn of foot and you couldn't ask for more. You would imagine the Juddmonte International would be tailor-made for him.”

Haggas added, “I have to say I have never been more nervous before a race than I was today. There was a bit of pressure, because all you fellows keep writing nice things about him, but he did it nicely today. I would not go as far as to say he is the best horse in the world–that is the sort of thing others might say–but he has done very well. It was a strongish field, there was a Classic winner in there and two fillies who were very useful last year, so he has done really well. If we step up to a mile-and-a-quarter, and if he stays fit and healthy, we will go for the Juddmonte.”

For long-time Sheikh Hamdan confidant Angus Gold, it was a win of high significance for Shadwell. “You can't underestimate how important he is, he's a massive asset for the operation,” he said. “Since Sheikh Hamdan died we're a smaller operation, as everyone knows, so to get a horse of this class is absolutely fantastic for the family and everyone in Dubai. He worked brilliantly, with two good horses, at Chelmsford the other day and you want to see them do it on their first run back. You are hopeful, obviously, but you never quite know until you see them on the track. For me, and in my experience, it is rare to get a horse of his ability and his temperament. He's just the most charming horse with great character, so he makes everybody's job easy. He's very straightforward.” Allowing himself a moment of reflection, Gold continued, “Sheikh Hamdan adored his breeding and his pedigrees. He loved looking into them and he'd have been thrilled to come up with a horse from that [Height of Fashion] family, most of whom stay well.” Looking ahead, he added, “I'm sure Baaeed will go further if we want to, but I don't think we need to straight away. He's still got the speed for a mile, so we'll stick at that for the time being. The obvious race is the Queen Anne, but I'd love to see him go up to the Juddmonte [International at York] and the [G1] Champion [S. at Ascot]. That would be the perfect way to showcase his versatility.”

Baaeed, the fifth of eight foals, is one of three scorers out of Listed Prix de Liancourt victrix Aghareed (Kingmambo), herself a daughter of MGISW US champion Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). Lahudood, in turn, is a granddaughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), herself one of seven black-type performers out of MGSW blue hen Height of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}). Bashayer, runner-up in the Listed Cheshire Oaks, is a full-sister to dual stakes victrix Sarayir, herself the dam of three stakes winners headed by the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway). Wijdan, another full-sister to Bashayer, ran second in the Listed Pretty Polly S. and is the dam of GII New York S. winner Makderah (Ire) (Danehill) and G2 Premio Ribot victrix Oriental Fashion (Ire) (Marju {Ire}). Bashayer is also kin to five black-type winners headed by MG1SW sires Nashwan (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and Nayef (Gulch). Baaeed is a full-brother to MGSW G2 Dubai City of Gold winner Hukum (Ire) and a half to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Naqeeb (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Exceed and Excel’s Sacred Too Strong In The Hungerford

Saturday belonged to William Haggas, with two of the Newmarket handler's pattern-race successes coming at the same time during an action-packed period mid-afternoon. While Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) was causing an upset at Deauville in the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano, the yard's Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) was tearing it up in Newbury's G2 BetVictor Hungerford S. Back from a weather-enforced break having failed to see out the mile of the G1 1000 Guineas when seventh at Newmarket May 2, Cheveley Park Stud's impressive G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner was anchored in rear early by a confident Tom Marquand. Slicing between rivals passing two out, the 6-1 shot surged to the fore with 150 yards remaining and comfortably held the seasonal debutante Laneqash (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) by a length as the 3-year-olds dominated. “They said she was top-class. To jump into the race like that was very impressive,” her rider said.

Kept to five and six furlongs as a juvenile, Sacred was runner-up in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot, G2 Lowther S. at York and G2 Flying Childers S. at Doncaster before finishing last of eight in Newmarket's G1 Cheveley Park S. in late September. Back with a bang trying this trip for the first time in the Apr. 14 Nell Gwyn, the homebred had been prepared for the G1 Commonwealth Cup and G3 Oak Tree S. after the Guineas but had missed out due to the summer storms. This was confirmation of her earlier promise and she remains unbeaten at this trip.”When Ryan [Moore] won the Nell Gwyn on her, he said it was like riding a motorbike,” Maureen Haggas said. “We've timed her with the latest equipment at home and some of her figures are unbelievable. She grew two inches through the winter and I hope that after her light season the owners might keep her in training at four. She's in the [G2] City of York [on Saturday], but that is very quick and could undo all the good that's happened for her break. Then there's the [Oct. 3 G1 Prix de la] Foret [at ParisLongchamp], but she would only go if it stayed dry.”

Sacred is the first foal out of Sacre Caroline (Blame), a half-sister to the five-times grade I-winning champion turf female Lady Eli (Divine Park) who cost the operation 300,000gns at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Also a half to the GIII Regret S. and GIII Mint Julep H. winner Bizzy Caroline (Afleet Alex), the dam is connected to the high-class Sweet Loretta (Tapit), Spiced Perfection (Smiling Tiger), Spring in the Air (Spring at Last), Palace Episode (Machiavellian), Laughing Lashes (Mr. Greeley), Pays to Dream (High Yield) and The Last Zip (City Zip). Her unraced 2-year-old filly is Enshrine (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), while she also has a 2020 colt by that sire who is due to sell at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.
