‘We Are NY Horse Racing’ Holds Lobby Day

Edited Press Release

Albany, NY–We Are NY Horse Racing held its first Lobby Day Thursday to educate lawmakers about the importance of horse racing to the New York State economy. Dozens of stakeholders from a variety of organizations, non-profits, and labor unions joined together to educate lawmakers about a sport that drives an industry responsible for 19,000 jobs and more than $3 billion in annual economic impact.

“The sport of horse racing has given me an opportunity to join an industry that truly supports me,” said exercise rider Francisco Eduardo Barrera Torres. “Since I started my career at Belmont Park in 2007, I've become a part of something greater. The sport has given me a great sense of pride as I've been able to provide for my family and send my child to school. I am thrilled to be a part of We Are NY Horse Racing's efforts because we must come together to protect our jobs and family-sustaining wages.”

The Lobby Day comes as We Are NY Horse Racing deployed paid advertisements on both digital and television to highlight the positive economic impacts of the sport. Since its initial launch in September, the We Are NY Horse Racing coalition has rapidly grown to now include nearly 50 member organizations. We Are NY Horse Racing is a diverse group of small businesses, labor unions, non-profits, trade organizations, and community groups working to advocate on behalf of the 19,000 women and men who are working in and around the sport.

“As a new father, this sport gives my family a sense of security because I am part of a community,” said Chris Manza, electrical foreman of IBEW Local 25. That's why this is so much more than just a job, it's a career that I can be proud of. I am incredibly lucky to work at Belmont Park, and I encourage our elected officials to come visit and see for themselves why this community is so special.”

“As a veterinarian and breeder, I am lucky to be able to care for these wonderful animals each and every day,” said Dr. Scott Ahlschwede, DVM of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. “None of us would have been here today without the horses, and it was an honor to be able to describe my role in the New York racing ecosystem to the assembled lawmakers [Thursday]. It was gratifying to see and hear their interest in a sport that plays a central role in the lives of so many New Yorkers.”

“I'm proud to stand in solidarity with We Are NY Horse Racing for this Lobby Day, so we can protect the critical economic benefits the sport provides to our State,” said Vincent Albanese, director of policy and public affairs of New York State Laborers' Organizing Fund. “I have seen firsthand how vital the sport of horse racing is in protecting the good-paying union jobs that countless union members rely on. Not only does it benefit the unionized construction industry, but it helps ensure our entire state's economy prospers by generating $3 billion in annual economic impact, 19,000 direct jobs.”

“Horse racing and breeding provide thousands of jobs and uplift small businesses, including those in the agriculture sector across the state,” said Jeff Williams, public policy director of the New York Farm Bureau. “We stand with the We Are NY Horse Racing Coalition as they hold their Lobby Day event and will continue to back their efforts.”

Rotknee A New Stakes Winner for Runhappy in Damon Runyon

The progressive Rotknee (Runhappy) took his current winning streak to three, running out an easy winner of Sunday's Damon Runyon S. at the Big A.

Drawn widest in a field of five, the homebred showed the best early speed and angled over to the fence in the opening furlong, forcing odds-on Best Idea (Honor Code) to be checked for half a stride. Going strongly on the engine beneath Manny Franco, Rotknee turned them in a couple of lengths to the good and kept on gamely to become the seventh stakes winner for his second-crop sire (by Super Saver).

Runner-up on debut in the Belmont mud July 9, the Butler homebred went pillar to post to graduate at Saratoga the following month before hitting the shelf. The dark bay picked up where he left off with a three-length defeat of entry-level state-bred allowance foes Feb. 11.

William Butler acquired Rotknee's second dam for $65,000 at the 2005 OBS April Sale and raced her to six wins and a pair of New York-bred stakes placings for earnings of nearly $241,000. Mama Theresa was bred by former TDN publisher Barry Weisbord and Peggy Santulli and is a daughter of Nothing Special, a stakes winner and Grade II-placed galloper for Weisbord who also produced GI Jockey Club Gold Cup and multiple Empire Classic S. hero Haynesfield (Speightstown).

In Spite of Mama is the dam of Rotknee's 2-year-old half-brother Mama's Gold (Bolt d'Oro), a yearling filly by Audible and was most recently bred to War of Will. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

First Foal Is A Colt For New York Stallion Killybegs Captain

Graded stakes winner Killybegs Captain was represented by his first foal when the winning Cryptoclearance mare Clearly Perfect delivered a colt Jan. 31 at Anne Morgan's and Tim Little's Mill Creek Farm in Stillwater, N.Y.

Killybegs Captain, an 8-year-old son of Mizzen Mast out of the Holy Bull mare Al Maha, stands for $2,500 LFSN at Mill Creek Farm.

Bred by Morgan, the newborn colt is the third foal out of Clearly Perfect. The mare's first foal, the Giant Surprise gelding Clear Surprise, sold for $14,000 2014 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall mixed sale and won four of 18 starts and $48,651. Clearly Perfect is also the dam of the newly turned 2-year-old Frank Conversation filly Franca who sold for $10,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern fall yearling sale.

Campaigned by Curragh Racing and trained by John Terranova, Killybegs Captain won seven of 27 starts with five seconds and three thirds for $572,453 in earnings. A $75,000 purchase at the 2016 OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale, Killybegs Captain was a winner at 3, 4, 5 and 6 and rose from the allowance ranks to become a stakes winner in his last two seasons.

Killybegs Captain scored his biggest victory in the Grade 3 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park in 2019, defeating a field that included He Hate Me and New York Central in 1:08.10 for 6 furlongs.

Third in the G2 John A. Nerud Stakes at Belmont Park and G1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in 2019, Killybegs Captain also won back-to-back editions of the Pelican Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in 2019 and 2020. He defeated multiple Grade 1 winner Imperial Hint in the 2019 edition of the Pelican, winning the six-furlong stakes in 1:09.66.
