King George Hero Pyledriver To Stand Under Coolmore’s NH Banner Next Year

Dual Group 1 winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}–La Pyle {Fr}, by Le Havre {Ire}) will stand under the Coolmore National Hunt banner in 2024, Coolmore announced on Friday. Retired earlier this year before being acquired by Coolmore, the 6-year-old won both the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. and the G1 Coronation Cup. A fee will be announced later.

“Pyledriver is the best horse I've ever had anything to do with and gave us so many fantastic days,” said co-trainer William Muir. “From day one he never let us down; brilliant temperament, went on any ground, clean winded and super sound. The only issue he ever had was caused by another horse leaning on him in that race in Saudi. It'll be a very sad day when he leaves the yard but I think he'll continue to excel in his new career.”

Bred by Knox and Wells, Ltd., he was a 10,000gns buy-back at the 2017 Tattersalls December Foal Sale and went into training with Muir and Chris Grassick in the colours of the La Pyle Partnership. A debut winner as a juvenile at Salisbury in 2019, he earned a listed victory later that year. Pyledriver then was second in the G3 Classic Trial and won the G2 Great Voltigeur prior to a run in the G1 Derby. He bounced back later that year to take the G2 King Edward VII S. and was also Classic-placed when third in the G1 St Leger.

Never worse than second in four 4-year-old starts, Pyledriver won the Coronation Cup after running second in the G2 Jockey Club S., and later in the year was second by just a length in the G1 Hong Kong Vase.

After a trip to Saudi Arabia and a fourth in Meydan's G1 Dubai Sheema Classic to kickstart his 5-year-old campaign, he was second defending his Coronation Cup crown prior to trouncing a quality field in the King George. This term, he won the G2 Hardwicke S. in good style at Royal Ascot and was fifth in another King George. His record stands at 20-8-4-1 and $2,606,075 in earnings.

“Pyledriver is a fine big horse, with plenty of quality about him, a great colour and a very good walk,” said Robert McCarthy who went to inspect him. “He was a terrific racehorse and he's a complete outcross for the majority of National Hunt mares here in Ireland.”

Pyledriver is the first foal out of the dual winner La Pyle, herself a half-sister to G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Mont Ormel (Fr) (Air Chief Marshal {Ire}) and a full-sister to G3 Park Express S. heroine Normandel (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}).

Onesto Will Stand At Haras d’Etreham Upon Retirement in 2024

Group 1 winner Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Onshore {GB}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}), who is bound for the Breeders' Cup next month, will stand at Haras d'Etreham in 2024, the French stud announced on Tuesday.

Bred by Diamond Creek Farm in Ireland, the Fabrice Chappet runner was a debut winner at Chantilly in September of his 2-year-old year and won the G2 Prix Greffulhe in his second start at three. Fifth in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, he claimed the Grand Prix de Paris last July and the colt was second in the G1 Irish Champion S. that September. Currently racing for Gerard Augustin-Normand, Jean-Etienne Dubois, Ecurie Hunter Valley, Haras d'Etreham, Ecurie Billon, Ecurie Elag, Chappet, and Hubert Guy, the 2023 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe third is poised for a GI Breeders' Cup Turf bid at Santa Anita in less than a month, having exited the Arc in good order. His record stands at 12-3-2-1 and $1,327,473 in earnings.

Haras d'Etreham's Nicolas de Chambure said, “Selected by Hubert Guy at the breeze-up sales in America, Onesto has always shown great speed for a Classic horse. He possesses a most remarkable pedigree, which is why we acquired him as a 2-year-old. He was a magnificent colt and has become a very handsome horse with the conformation of a miler and a strong physique. Our hopes of seeing him becoming a stallion prospect have been realised thanks to his high-class performances at the top level. In addition to his natural speed, he boasts a rare capacity of acceleration and the mentality of a warrior.”

The 185,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling turned $535,000 OBS Spring Sale 2-year-old is out of the unraced mare Onshore. She is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Jet Away (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), while her Kahyasi (Ire) dam Kalima (GB) is a full-sister to the tremendously influential blue hen Hasili (Ire) and her brood of top-level winners.

“His racing career has been a wonderful adventure alongside a group of enthusiastic associates and we are delighted to welcome Onesto to stud as he represents a unique opportunity for us, and a first-rate profile for French breeders and the French stallion ranks,” Chambure added.

A syndicate will be created for Onesto's stallion career, with some shares available. His stud fee will be announced in due course.

West Will Power Will Stand at Stud in Korea

Ben Glass, the stable manager for Gary and Mary West, has reported that GI Stephen Foster S. winner West Will Power (Bernardini–Wild Promises, by Wild Event) has been sold to a Korean farm, where he will stand at stud next year.

Glass said the deal was brokered by bloodstock agent Jun Park. Glass did not know what farm had bought West Will Power, but according to a Tweet from Korea Racing his new home will be Songma Farm.

On July 1, West Will Power picked up the biggest victory of his career, winning the GI Stephen Foster S. by a half-length, picking up his first Grade I win in the process. Afterward, however, he suffered a soft tissue injury and his retirement was announced in early August.

“He had an injury after that race, I believe in his left front pastern,” Glass said. “Dr. (Larry) Bramlage said it would take considerable time to heal, if it would heal at all. We didn't want to bring him back as a 7-year-old and maybe hurt him. He ran so well for us and was a homebred, so we decided the best thing to do was to retire him.”

Trained by Brad Cox, West Will Power was 7-for-17 during his career and earned $1,745,390. He also won the GII New Orleans Classic S. and the GII Hagyard Fayette S.

“He had a very nice career and that he's a homebred made it even nicer,” Glass said. “That's because we got the breeders' awards. We were really happy with him and the career he had.”

Glass said he tried to find a U.S. stallion farm that would agree to take West Will Power, but was unsuccessful.

“Sadly, Kentucky farms did not reach out to us and I tried quite a few,” he said. “I think with his age, being six, that probably stopped most of them. I tried hard to sell him throughout the whole United States. If this injury had happened earlier in his life I think we would have found a home for him here. But with his being six, then breeding at seven, his first foals would have been born when he was eight and wouldn't have run until he was 10. That's one of the reasons there wasn't a great deal of interest.”

The Wests have sent other stallions to Korea, including Concert Tour (Street Sense), the winner of the 2021 GII Rebel S. and the 2021 San Vicente S.

“We've sent a couple other horses to Korea,” Glass said. “We get pictures back and they just look gorgeous. They take great care of them and they are really coming on when it comes to their breeding program.”

Pretty Tiger To Stand As Haras d’Etreham And Haras De Cercy Joint Venture

Multiple group winner Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Fast And Pretty {Ire}, by Zamindar) will stand as part of a partnership between Haras d'Etreham and Haras de Cercy next year at the former's NH branch, Haras de la Tuilerie, the studs announced on Tuesday.

A fee for the G1 Prix Ganay second and G1 Prix d'Ispahan third will be announced later. There are also breeding rights available in the G2 Prix Eugene Adam hero, who was bred by Haras de Chevotel. Also a winner of the G3 Prix Exbury and a pair of listed races, the €105,000 Arqana August yearling won six times from 17 starts and has $479,162 in earnings for racing owner Bernard Giraudon and trainer Fabrice Vermeulen.

The partners already jointly manage the stallion career of fellow Sea The Moon stallion Wonderful Moon (Ger) who is based at Haras de Cercy, and will do the same with Pretty Tiger, while supporting both stallions with mares. After 2024, the pair will be rotated between the two studs annually.

Etreham's Nicolas de Chambure said, “We are delighted to have purchased Pretty Tiger to join our stallion roster. He has an exceptional physique, size, speed, and a colossal acceleration; all of which will make him a great match for French National Hunt broodmares. It is fantastic to have Haras de Cercy as our partner for these two sires, Wonderful Moon and Pretty Tiger.”

Jacques Cypres, president of Haras de Cercy, said, “Pretty Tiger and Wonderful Moon ran over the Classic distance and performed at a high level early in their respective racing careers, making them valuable assets to French National Hunt breeding.”
