Irish Classic Winner Westover To Yushun Stallion Station In Japan

Multiple Group 1 winner and Classic winner Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Mirabilis, by Lear Fan) has been sold and will stand at Yushun Stallion Station in Japan next year, his owner/breeder Juddmonte announced on Thursday. The Irish Derby hero will be syndicated and a fee will be announced later.

Trained by Ralph Beckett, Westover won on debut at Sandown in August of 2021 and was listed-placed later that year. At three, he won the G3 Bet365 Classic Trial and was a good third in the G1 Derby prior to running off with the Irish Derby by seven lengths. Kept in training at four, he was second to the current Longines World's Best Racehorse Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic this March and ran second in the G1 Coronation Cup in June. Back in the winner's circle in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud in July, he would finish his career with a narrow second in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. and fill the same position in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. An injury sustained in the latter race resulted in his retirement in October. His record stands at 13-4-6-1 and $4,064,813 in earnings.

“Given his tremendously consistent race record, along with his beautiful conformation and pedigree, he is sure to make a successful contribution to the Japanese breeding industry,” Juddmonte said in a statement.

A full-brother to G3 Darley Club S. winner Monarchs Glen (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Westover is out of GIII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S. heroine Mirabilis, who also won at stakes level in France, was second in the G3 Prix Miesque and G3 Prix du Pin and took third in the G1 Prix de la Foret. Second dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) claimed a pair of grade/group stakes in California and France, and then threw dual Group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado to the cover of Storm Cat.

Battaash’s Full-Brother The Antarctic Retired to Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud for 2024

Multiple group winner The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Anna Law {Ire}, by Lawman {Fr}), a full-brother to crack sprinter Battaash (Ire), has been retired and will stand under the Coolmore banner at Castlehyde Stud in 2024, Coolmore announced on Wednesday. A fee for the G1 Middle Park S. second and G1 Prix Morny third will be announced later.

“He's fast, a very good-looking individual and his own-brother Battaash is probably the best five-furlong sprinter of recent times,” said Castlehyde's Paddy Fleming. “On a mark of 113 as a 2-year-old, the Antarctic was rated the equal of Havana Grey (GB)–who is out of a Dark Angel mare–and just a pound below his own sire Dark Angel.”

Bred by Paul McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud, the grey was a 750,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 purchase by Coolmore's MV Magnier. Trained by Aidan O'Brien for a Coolmore partnership, the February foal won his first two starts and was second in the G2 Prix Robert Papin later in his juvenile season prior to a victory in the G3 Prix de Cabourg. Two Group 1 placings followed–with a third in the Prix Morny to stablemate Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) and a second to that foe in the Middle Park. As a 3-year-old he also won the G3 Lacken S. at Naas and was retired with a mark of 12-4-2-3 and $255,971 in earnings.

“We always said Battaash was the best-looking horse that we'd bred but I think this guy is better, no doubt about it,” said McCartan after The Antarctic joined the Coolmore fold at the sales.

The fifth foal out of Anna Law, herself a half-sister to G2 Champagne S. Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk), The Antarctic is also related to group sire Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).

Europe’s Top Sprinter Shaquille a First for Dullingham Park

The dual Group 1 winner Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) is the first stallion to retire to Steve Parkin's Dullingham Park near Newmarket.

The top-rated sprinter in Europe this year, Shaquille was trained by Julie Camacho to win the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot before defeating his elders in the July Cup at Newmarket.

The 3-year-old was co-bred by his owner Martin Hughes, who paid tribute to the retiring star, saying, “It was an honour to be associated with such a brilliant horse. To breed him and to race him in my colours, and then to see him develop into a superstar on the track was thrilling. Both of his Group 1 wins were spectacular. I now look forward to partnering with Dullingham Park in his future career as a stallion.”

Shaquille is out of the Galileo (Ire) mare Magic (Ire), herself a daughter of Cheveley Park Stud's multiple group-winning sprinter Danehurst (GB) (Danehill). He won seven of his nine career starts, including scoring twice at York as a juvenile and landing the Listed Carnarvon S. at Newbury before his twin Group 1 successes.

Steve Parkin, who outlined his plans for Dullingham Park Stud in a TDN interview last month, said, “We are delighted to have been able to secure a horse of Shaquille's ability and potential to stand at our new stallion farm. Julie, Steve and their team have done a terrific job with his racing career and I know that our team will be working hard to ensure that Shaquille is equally successful in his new career as a stallion.”

Ollie Fowlston, who was appointed earlier this year to manage Dullingham Park Stud, added, “It is a tribute to the commitment Steve Parkin has shown to the British breeding industry in establishing a new stallion operation on an historic stud that we are able to introduce a stallion of Shaquille's calibre. In addition to his obvious speed and ability, he is a tremendously good-looking horse with a wonderful temperament. We can't wait to show him to breeders from around the world during the Tattersalls December Sales.”

Shaquille's trainer Julie Camacho and her husband and assistant trainer Steve Brown said, “Shaquille has taken us to the very highest level and given us some of the most exciting days of our racing lives. We thank Martin for entrusting him to us, and we wish the team at Dullingham Park Stud the best of luck for his stallion career. We look forward to training some of his progeny in years to come.”

Ace Impact To Stand At €40,000

Haras de Beaumont's new recruit, the top-rated 3-year-old Ace Impact (Fr) (Cracksman {GB}), will stand at an opening fee of €40,000. Unbeaten in six starts, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt won the Prix du Jockey Club in record time and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“Ace Impact proved himself to be an exceptional athlete,” said Haras de Beaumont manager Mathieu Alex of the dual Group 1 winner.

“The recent victory of Big Rock (Fr), who was second to Ace Impact at Chantilly, yet again underscored the brilliance of his win in the French Derby, which he won by 3.5 lengths. His lightning turn of foot, coupled with his warrior mindset, combined to make him an outstanding performer. He has a lot going for him to as regards becoming a top-class stallion. We are very grateful to the early support received by European breeders. The fact that he is beginning his stallion career in France at Haras de Beaumont is a very positive news for our country.”

Ace Impact's stud-mate Intello (Ger) will remain at a fee of €8,000 in 2024. The son of Galileo (Ire) covered 125 mares in his first year at Haras de Beaumont.

“That's one of the biggest 'books' of his stallion career,” Alex said. “The ratio of his progeny gaining black type per runner (10.6%) ranks as one of the best in France in the proven sires' division.

“The sire of 41 stakes performers, Intello has enjoyed another fine year in 2023. His yearlings have sold for as much as €135,000 this year, which is proof positive of the confidence levels in which the professionals have in him.”

Beaumont is also home to the dual Group 1 winner Sealiway (Fr) whose pedigree received a further boost over the weekend when his full-brother Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) won the G1 Critérium International (Gr1). Sealiway was the busiest stallion in France this year, covering 166 mares in his first book, and will remain at the same fee of €12,000 in 2024.

“Sealiway was crowned French champion 2-year-old following an easy win in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, and he was also one of Europe's top 3-year-olds, having finished second in the Prix du Jockey-Club won by St Mark's Basilica (Fr). Furthermore, his victory in the Champion S. at Ascot left a lasting impression,” said Alex.

“Haras de Beaumont has supported Sealiway from day one and will continue to do so as we have great faith in him.”

Completing the line-up is the Group 3-winning miler Stunning Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who will have his first runners in 2024 and will stand at a fee of €3,000.

“The 2024 season will be an important one for Stunning Spirit,” Alex added. “We are very pleased with his yearlings that have gone to trainers. The feedback emanating from various professionals is very positive, and we can't wait to see his first 2-year-olds on the racecourse.”
