Sandy Lane Winner El Caballo To Stand At Culworth Grounds

Group 2 winner El Caballo (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) will stand at Culworth Grounds Farm in 2024, the stud announced on Wednesday. The four-year-old will stand at £6,000 in his first season.

This is a first stallion for Culworth Grounds, which is owned by Sophie Buckley, a familiar face on the sales circuit as a consignor and pinhooker. She said, “We are delighted to have secured El Caballo. He was a precocious, tough and consistent racehorse. Bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud he has an excellent pedigree and is rated only one pound lower than their super sire Havana Grey (GB). El Caballo is an exciting prospect offering breeders access to a fast, current and successful family at exceptional value.”

A £30,000 Goffs UK Premier yearling, bought by his trainer Karl Burke, El Caballo is a half-brother to four winners including the Italian Listed winner Avengers Queen (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}). His dam was a four-time winner and also a half-sister to G2 Mill Reef S. winner Temple Meads (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}).

Star Stayer Subjectivist To Stand At Alne Park Stud Next Year

Star stayer Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}–Reckoning {Ire}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) will stand at Alne Park Stud in 2024, the stud posted on X. The two-time Group 1 winner's fee will be £4,000.

Alne Park Stud director Grace Skelton, wife of National Hunt trainer Dan Skelton, said, “The addition of Subjectivist to our stallion roster is a huge leap forward for Alne Park Stud. To stand a stallion of this calibre is an immense honour.

“We firmly believe that keeping this exceptional stallion in the UK is a real boost to British breeders and we hope that he will see plenty of support in his debut season.”

Bred by Mascalls Stud, he was purchased for Marc Chan by former trainer Mark Johnston for 62,000gns out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. A juvenile winner, his 3-year-old season was highlighted by a score in the G3 March S. at Goodwood prior to winning the G1 Prix Royal-Oak later that year. He resumed at four with a tally in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup and delivered a tour de force in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2021. Returning to the racecourse this year after recovering from a tendon injury, he made three starts, with his two final starts resulting in a pair of thirds in the Dubai Gold Cup in March and the Gold Cup at Ascot in June for Mark's son Charlie. Subjectivist's record stands at 20-6-4-4 and $1,191,024 in earnings. He was retired earlier this year after his Royal Ascot run.

Mark Johnston added, “I always say that, when placing horses, the opposition trumps all other factors. But, very rarely, you come across a horse where the opposition isn't a factor at all. Subjectivist was such a horse.

“In 2021, I truly believed that there wasn't a horse in the world that could beat him at two miles or more, in any ground.”

Out of a multiple stakes-placed half-sister to GIII My Charmer H. second Hope Cross (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), Subjectivist is a half-brother to multiple group winner Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) who was second in the G1 St Leger and third in the G1 Goodwood Cup; and G2 Rockfel S. third Alba Rose (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}).

GISW And Classic-Placed Zandon Retired To Spendthrift Farm

Grade I winner Zandon (Upstart–Memories Prevail, by Creative Cause) has been retired and has arrived at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky ahead of stallion duty in 2024, the farm announced. The dark bay will stand for $12,500 stands and nurses and will participate in Spendthrift's “Share the Upside” program on a limited basis for a fee of $15,000 for two years.

“We are excited about Zandon and the ability to offer a Grade I winner with his physical through our Share The Upside program. He's what they should look like,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “You won't find many Grade I winners in town that look and move the way he does. He's a big, classy individual with a beautiful, smooth gait, which is likely why he was able to remain so sound through the rigors of competing against the best of his generation for two straight years. We believe breeders are really going to like him, and we invite them to come out and see for themselves.”

Bred by the late Brereton Jones, the dark bay brought $170,000 as a Keeneland September yearling and was put into training with Chad Brown. A winner of his Belmont debut, the Jeff Drown runner was also second in the GII Remsen S. as a juvenile and was third in the GII Risen Star S. in his 3-year-old bow. A winner of the GI Blue Grass S., he was favored in the GI Kentucky Derby and would go on to place third in May of 2022. Throughout the rest of the year, he would add three more graded placings in the GII Jim Dandy S., GI Travers S., and the GI Pennsylvania Derby.

He rolled a trio of twos in his first three starts this term, in the GIII Westchester S., GI Metropolitan H. in June, and in the GI Whitney S. at Saratoga in August. The GII Woodward S. went his way in October, and he was retired after a start in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic with a record of 14-3-6-3 and $2.2 million in earnings.

The second foal and one of three winners for his unraced dam, Zandon is a half-brother to Panamanian Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Sol Principe Gris (Summer Front). His dam is a half-sister to MGSW and MGISP Cairo Memories (Cairo Prince), as well as the SW Cariba (Cairo Prince). Under the third dam is Grade II winner Hello Liberty (Forest Camp), who was second in the GI Acorn S.

Spendthrift announced in September that Zandon would join Taiba (Gun Runner) and Arabian Lion (Justify) as new stallions at their Kentucky base in 2024.

Mostahdaf Bound For Beech House Stud In 2024 As Shadwell UK Roster Relocates

Shadwell homebred Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Handassa {GB}, by Dubawi {Ire}), a dual Group 1 winner, will stand at Beech House Stud next season after a final start in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf on Saturday, the operation announced on Thursday. He will join the Shadwell UK roster which is relocating permanently to Newmarket.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the dark bay won five of his first six starts at three, including the G3 Darley S. At four, both the G3 Gordon Richards S. and G3 September S. went his way, and he also ran second twice more–in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. and in Royal Ascot's G2 Hardwicke S.

It was as a 5-year-old that the son of Handassa really shone, taking the G2 Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia in February, before a close fourth in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in Dubai a month later. His final two starts were won by a combined five lengths, with the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. going his way at Royal Ascot, and then he secured the G1 Juddmonte International at York in August. His current record features 10 wins in 16 starts with earnings of $3,000,193.

Stephen Collins, European bloodstock manager for Shadwell, said, “Shadwell are delighted that Mostahdaf will retire to the newly refurbished Beech House stallion complex in Newmarket. He has all the attributes to become a successful stallion.

“Mostahdaf was an outstanding winner of both the Group 1 Prince of Wales's S., the highest-rated winner of the race since Dubai Millennium in 2000, and the Group 1 Juddmonte International S. at York in the same year. A truly remarkable historic double achieved by only two horses in the last 50 years.

“He possesses a pedigree packed with natural speed being closely related to two champion Group 1 winning sprinters. Mostahdaf demonstrated his incredible turn of foot by winning over seven-furlongs on debut and winning three races at a mile at three before being stepped up in trip.

“A quality, well balanced, imposing individual, with an athletic walk, he should prove very popular with breeders.”

Out of the listed winner Handassa, Mostahdaf is a half-brother to the high-class Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who won the Sun Chariot S. and Falmouth S., both Group 1 races. Under his third dam are the pair of Group 1-winning sprinters and sires Pastoral Pursuits (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and Goodricke (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}).

Angus Gold, racing manager for Shadwell, said, “Mostahdaf has been a top-class horse for the last three seasons, from showing his speed when winning five of his six races as a 3-year-old between seven furlongs and a mile; he then displayed his clear versatility and ability over further.

“Mostahdaf never missed a day's training and was a thorough professional throughout his career; his enthusiasm for his work, together with his outstanding physique and speed, should make him a very attractive prospect for breeders.”

John Gosden said of the 128-rated 5-year-old, “Mostahdaf has always been a pleasure to train. Sound and always positive and generous in his work. His action is superb and fluent with a high cruising speed and electric acceleration. A horse who has been very consistent throughout his career.”

A fee for Mostahdaf and the rest of the UK roster will be announced in due course. Formerly Shadwell's UK stallion base, Nunnery Stud will remain a private base for the foaling of all of Shadwell's mares vising UK-based stallions.
