Contrail Will Retire to Shadai After Japan Cup Run

Last year's Japanese Triple Crown winner and dual champion Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}–Rhodochrosite, by Unbridled's Song) will retire to Shadai Stallion Station in Japan after making his final start in the G1 Japan Cup on Nov. 28. The news was first reported by BloodHorse. A fee for the 4-year-old North Hills Co., Ltd-bred will be announced later.

The Shinji Maeda colourbearer, who is trained by Yoshito Yahagi, was named the Japanese Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 2019 on the back of a flawless campaign that culminated in a 1 1/2-length win in the G1 Hopeful S. after taking the 1800-metre G3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai S. in a record time of 1:44.50 in November of that year.

Contrail made his 3-year-old bow in the Apr. 19 G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas, and maintained his unbeaten record with more victories in the May 31 G1 Japanese Derby and G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai on Sept. 27. He just lasted for a neck score in the G1 Japanese St. Leger to become the eighth Japanese Triple Crown Winner on Oct. 25, 2020. Although he lost the G1 Japan Cup to the Japanese Horse of the Year Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) running second, Contrail still earned divisional honours as the Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. His 2021 record shows a third in the G1 Osaka Hai at Hanshin in April and a second in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) to 2021 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) on Halloween. He has earned $8,311,887 from just 10 starts, with seven wins, two seconds and a third.

His dam, the placed Unbridled's Song mare Rhodochrosite, was picked up by Koji Maeda for $385,000 as a Keeneland September yearling in 2011. Contrail is her third foal, while his granddam Folklore (Tiznow) was a winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, the GI Matron S. and the GII Adirondack S. and was also named the Eclipse Champion Juvenile Filly in 2005. A half-sister to Folklore, the multiple stakes-placed Delightful Quality (Elusive Quality), is the dam of 2020 U.S. Champion Juvenile Colt and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality (Tapit), who progressed to take the 2021 GI Belmont S. as a sophomore and will stand for $75,000 at Darley America next year.

Group 1 Winner Fifty Stars to Sunnyhill Stud

Group 1 winner Fifty Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Swizzle Stick {Ire}, by Sadler's Wells), will retire to Sunnyhill Stud in partnership with Jack Cantillon's Bloodstock Racing as a National Hunt stallion in 2022. A fee for the G1 Australian Cup hero will be announced later, and he will be available for inspection in December.

Rated 121 by Timeform, Fifty Stars is a half-brother to Leopardstown Christmas Festival 19-length winner Whiskey Sour (Ire) (Jeremy). In addition to his Group 1 win, the 6-year-old spent his entire career Down Under and posted wins in two editions of the G2 Blamey S. (19/20), as well as the G2 Ajax S. and G3 Sandown S. in 36 starts. Bred by Airlie Stud, he retired with just over $1.9m in earnings.

Michael Hickey of Sunnyhill Stud said, “I look forward to standing Fifty Stars at Sunnyhill. He was a top-class, consistent racehorse and retired sound from his racing career. He is a smashing looking individual with great presence and a wonderful walk, and of course he is by a champion in Sea The Stars. The fact that he had the speed to win from 7f to 10f should appeal to NH breeders and we look forward to having him available for inspection shortly.”

Added Bloodstock Racing's Jack Cantillon, “Fifty Stars has simply outstanding credentials as a National Hunt stallion. He's the first horse in a generation to be a Group 1 winning half-brother to a Grade 1 winner retired as a National Hunt stallion in Ireland. It's an honour to partner with a farm of the heritage of Sunnyhill Stud to stand him.”

Out of a half-sister to two-time Irish group winner Viztoria (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), Fifty Stars hails from the same family as Group 1 winner and sire Zilzal (Nureyev).

Nando Parrado to Stand at Irish National Stud in 2022

Group winner Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Chibola {Arg}, by Roy), who placed twice at Group 1 level, will retire to the Irish National Stud in 2022. A fee for the G2 Coventry S. hero will be announced later. There will also be a limited number of shares available.

Irish National Stud CEO, Cathal Beale said, “We are thrilled to be standing Nando Parrado, new for 2022. He was a precocious, high-class 2-year-old, by a sire of sires, from a great family and he is an exceptional physical. We are really looking forward to welcoming breeders to see him.”

Bred by Anita Wigan, the bay was bought by Paul and Marie McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud as a 165,000gns foal at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, and, after RNA'ing at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale at 200,000gns, went into training in the colours of Marie McCartan. The Clive Cox trainee broke his maiden at second asking in Royal Ascot's Coventry S. He then ran a good second in the G1 Prix Morny last August before completing the exacta in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Paul McCartan said, “For me, he was the nicest foal of the year in 2018. He was certainly the nicest foal we have ever bought. He had size and strength, a great hip, a lovely head and action to die for. We are retaining a good chunk of ownership and we will endeavour to buy some of his nicest foals in 2023.”

Clive Cox added, “Nando Parrado had shown me exceptional pace from day one. An imposing physical, he had beautiful balance and was so light on his feet, with an ice cool temperament. Nando Parrado was a joy to train, very sound and his 2-year-old performances were top drawer.”

A winner in 10 starts with $190,398 in earnings, the sixth foal out of his dam Chibola is not the only one of her offspring to earn black-type. Muntadab (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was listed placed in England, while Dubai Horizon (Ire) (Poet's Voice [GB}) was third in the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy. Chibola progressed to win a Group 3 in her native land as a 4-year-old and was also Group 1-placed as a juvenile. She is a full-sister to G1 Estrellas Junior Sprint hero Chollo (Arg) (Roy) and a half to two more black-type winners.

Dee Ex Bee Joins Arctic Tack Stud

Derby runner-up Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}–Dubai Sunrise, by Seeking the Gold) will stand his first season as a National Hunt stallion alongside Jet Away (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) at Arctic Tack Stud in Ireland. The son of Farrh's debut fee will be €3,500 with a concession for filly foals.

Bred by Godolphin, the bay raced for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and raced for all bar his final two starts for trainer Mark Johnston. Dual listed-placed as a juvenile, Dee Ex Bee ran second in the 2018 G3 Chester Vase that May, second in the G1 Derby that June and later that summer added another Classic placing with a third in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Another third, this time in Germany's G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern, ended his sophomore year. Never off the board in six starts at group level in 2019, Dee Ex Bee added wins in the G3 Henry II S. and G3 Sagaro S. to his ledger alongside a trio of Group 1 placings-the Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup, and Prix du Cadran. He retires with a record of 21-4-7-5 and earnings of $1,181,563.

Arctic Tack Stud's Eoin Banville said, “We are thrilled to be able to bring Dee Ex Bee to Arctic Tack Stud to offer a valuable outcross for Irish breeders.

“Dee Ex Bee's talent was matched by his versatility, with his performances on ground described as good to firm all the way through to heavy and over a variety of different trips. His sire has already demonstrated his value as a stallion and I have no doubt Dee Ex Bee will prove as popular and important as Jet Away in the coming years with us.”

Although his dam was unraced, she is a full-sister to the outstanding racehorse Dubai Millennium (GB) (Seeking the Gold), who would sire only one crop of foals, but in that group was the multiple Group 1 winner and sire Dubawi (Ire). Second dam Colorado Dancer (Ire) (Shareef Dancer) won a brace of French group races and placed twice at Group 1 level, while her dam is the bluehen Fall Aspen (Pretense).

“Dee Ex Bee was the type of horse you dream of as a stayer,” said former trainer Mark Johnston. “He had Group 1 quality, was tremendously versatile and ticked all the boxes physically.

“He competed against some of the very best horses around during his time in training and played his part in some tremendous races, including a Derby, Gold Cup at Ascot and a Goodwood Cup. I am delighted that he will have this opportunity at Arctic Tack Stud and have no doubt Irish breeders will benefit greatly from his presence.”
